TORONTO — A raw film about an abused teen named Precious won the audience choice award at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, stoking predictions that the harrowing, Oprah Winfrey-backed tale is Oscar-bound.

"Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire," snagged the coveted award at a luncheon that also named "Cairo Time," from Toronto director Ruba Nadda, the best Canadian feature.

The win for "Precious" follows a sensational debut earlier this year at Sundance, where the film claimed the grand jury and audience awards.

Piers Handling, co-director of the Toronto festival, said the movie's remarkable success is not unlike last year's surprise sensation, "Slumdog Millionaire".

"I think people want to see real stories about real people who are being tested in some kind of way and at the end of the day, hopefully, come out ahead of the game," said Handling. "As I think about it, it probably bears a lot of resemblance to last year's 'Slumdog Millionaire.'"

The film revolves around an obese teen who has been impregnated for the second time by her father, and stars Gabourey (Gabby) Sidibe, Mo'Nique, Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey. Tyler Perry and Winfrey serve as executive producers.

"Slumdog Millionaire," an indie film set in the slums of Mumbai, came from virtually nowhere to claim the audience choice award at the Toronto Film Fest and went on to sweep the big categories at the Oscars.

The People's Choice award includes a 15,000 Canadian dollar ($14,000) prize, which was accepted for "Precious" on behalf by Laurie May, co-president of production company Maple Pictures.

"So far, we're two for two," boasted May, referring to the two-time audience win.

Other prizes handed out Saturday included the award for best Canadian first feature film, which went to Quebec's Alexandre Franchi for "The Wild Hunt," set in the fantasy-reality of a large role-playing game. The award for best Canadian short film went to Pedro Pires for "Danse Macabre," which was based on a concept by Robert Lepage.

Nadda, who gets CA$30,000 ($28,000) as part of the best Canadian feature prize for "Cairo Time," said her film very nearly didn't get made.

She noted that roughly CA$1.5 million ($1.4 million) in funding fell through just two weeks before filming was to start in Egypt. She recalled getting the news from her producer saying the production, starring Patricia Clarkson and Tom McCamus, was dead.

"I went into shock and called him back and I was crying and I was like, `I'm begging you, I'm begging you, I'm begging you – please figure this out," recalled Nadda, who also wrote the screenplay.

In 48 hours, they were back on track with the help of Telefilm.

"This is why I feel like I've won the lottery, I really have," said Nadda, who has made 18 films, but makes her debut appearance at the fest with her tale about a married magazine editor who flirts with having an affair.

New award categories this year included a midnight madness prize, which went to Australian Sean Byrne's horror "The Loved Ones," and a people's choice award for documentary films, which went to "The Topp Twins" from Winnipeg's Leanne Pooley, about New Zealand lesbian country-and-western singers.

The awards wrapped up 10 days of movie madness that included more than 300 projects and megastars including George Clooney, Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Penelope Cruz and Nicolas Cage.

Saturday's closing night film was to be "The Young Victoria" starring Emily Blunt and directed by Quebec's Jean-Marc Vallee, who helmed 2005's "C.R.A.Z.Y".

I read "Push" years ago and I can't wait to see this movie. We need more movies about real issues that aren't afraid to be raw and that don't have to worry about being politically correct.

Yes, but is there a river in it? If there's no river and some unshaven guy wearing a checkered shirt who's sexually abusing his daughter, I ain't seeing it. Why do so many people buy into Oprah's garbage? I've stopped looking at these Sundance films because, like Oprah's aesthetic, it's always the same rubbish. Oprah's book choices are all about emotional manipulation of the viewer/reader. Oprah's overriding criterion of a good book/film is, did it make you cry? If it did, it's a powerful masterpiece that will surely change your life and the way you view the world, etc., etc. Your tears are precious, and so are your emotions. Don't sell them cheaply.

Forget about Oprah, did you read the book?

I agree. I understand that isn't always about eliciting emotional responses, but the book is so startling in style and tone.

I recommend it before leaping to judgment based on affiliations.

Without Oprah, without the film, this is a very powerful book. I purchased it for my book club and could not put it down, and was hesitant to suggest we read it. We've all read the book and are going to see the film. Please, give the book a chance before you go forward with your judgment. I hope people like you don't judge this project because of Oprah, please read the book then see if you're interested.

I read "Push" just because I saw the previews for this movie. The book is really, really raw also, and it is just such a sad, sad place for many people in the world. So much abuse and ignorance...it is really something else to see strong individuals trying to make it regardless of the abuse. I unfortunately did not know that "Push" is an older book, written in the 90's.

Yep, the press started talking about this film over 4 months ago.

Wow, I am not sure I'll be able to handle the raw abuse. I saw the preview short on a show that Monique was on and I had to close my eyes on some of the scenes. Wow, what a transformation for all of the actors involved. It is really a raw approach, no pretty divas like actors. They really took the direction and development of their characters to heart.

Well done, I just hope I can get enough emotional resolve to sit through the film when it comes out.

I'm glad that this film is getting attention. I'm happy that a story about Black women and some of the issues that affect us is getting much needed attention. I'm also proud of Monique, who in the constant midst of criticism, is able to branch out to new roles and re-brand herself.

I will admit that a film like Precious will be hard for me to watch because I don't usually like hard gritty films such as what it seems this is being painted to be, but I will support it, just like I did Monster's Ball a few years ago. I'm still not the biggest fan of Monster's ball, even though Halle Berry is from my hometown and my high school. I didn't believe she deserved the Oscar for that role, but oh well. I hope Precious lives up to my expectations. It will also be great for Oprah, if it does win an Oscar.

Lastly, it will be a redemption, if you will, for the year the The Color Purple was passed over for an Oscar, a movie that can be seen in the same light for the issues that it touched on for the Black community, particularly, for Black women. I know it's not the same, but maybe, finally, now, people will begin to pay attention to issues that need to be addressed, and well begin to address them.

I will be supporting it as well, not because I identify with the abuse, but because as I have been growing up and being exposed to a lot of things, I realise that there are a lot of women like Precious out there whom we pass everyday. We shrug them off s being 'losers' but they are trying their best against all odds. BTW the gentleman who directed Monster's Ball also directed Precious. I am in.

Me too! Gabby is getting rave reviews from TIFF. I thik she could snag best new actress. I watched one of her interiews....she is pretty impressive and way different from Precious. Bravo for all involved!

Congrats to all involved in Precious. And I wish them much success in a thought provoking, inspiring movie. BUT this is NOT Slumdog Millionaire! Where Slumdog was a feel good, uplifting movie that touched on tough issues but ultimately delivered on the syrupy romantic comedy sweetness, Precious is a gritty drama about incest, racial strife, poverty and crushed spirits rising again. A good story but not the kind of movie that is Box Office gold.

So you've seen the movie???

You complain but the description that you give of Slumdog seems pretty similar to that of Precious. I think I'll just wait to review it for myself.

"As I think about it, it probably bears a lot of resemblance to last year's 'Slumdog Millionaire.'"

Check out the trailer. http://www.weareallprecious.com/ I saw a lot more on the short clip that was on a TV program. I really was emotionally stunned by it. Intense, scary, and sad but true for so many teens in this world.

These two films have a divergent storyline. Some elements are the same such as abject poverty etc., but Precious is about incest, child abuse, emotional abuse from a parent who hates you, teen obesity.

I'm confused about your comments. Why is Precious not to be considered box office gold if it is truly all of the things you said it is? Wasn't Monster's Ball about the same type of things that you describe, poverty and crushed spirits, yet garnered an Oscar for Halle Berry and the director? I'm not the biggest fan of Monster's Ball, but was it not the same situation?

All I 'm asking for is clarification on your remarks because they are not consistent.

"Box Office" refers to the amount of money it makes at the theater, not the number of awards it wins.

Monster's Ball grossed just over $31 million domestically. That's decent, but not "gold."

Monster's Ball was far from a hit . If they market Precious right it could be. Plus there is a demand for Precious from all the well deserved hype its getting
