NEW YORK -- Add this one to the presidential collection: the heart-shaped potato.

By the time Barack Obama came on stage to the taping of the "Late Show" on Monday, host David Letterman had offered up 10 reasons why in the world the president had agreed to do it.

Among Letterman's theories: Obama said yes without thinking about it, or as Letterman put it, "Like Bush did with Iraq."

But Obama had other ideas. It turns out he was listening when Letterman had bantered with a woman in the audience who brought -- yes -- a potato in the shape of a heart to the show.

Obama told Letterman: "The main reason I'm here? I want to see that heart-shaped potato."

The woman tossed the potato to Letterman.

She agreed to let Obama keep it. Said the president: "This is remarkable."

Obama also had his most irreverent answer yet on the question of whether some of the vitriolic reaction to his health care plan is driven at least partly by racism.

"First of all, I think it's important to realize that I was actually black before the election," Obama said to huge laughs from Letterman and the audience.

Responded Letterman: "How long have you been a black man?"

Letterman covered a number of topics with Obama -- many of them serious -- in a taping that ran about 40 minutes. The show will be broadcast on CBS on Monday evening.

On the economy, Obama offered a sober prediction as the country deals with 9.7 percent unemployment, the worst level since 1983. He said he expects unemployment will be a "big problem" for at least another year. But he also said the economy will rebound even stronger.

As for the war in Afghanistan, Obama said he knows some people want him to bring troops home, and others are calling for him to increase U.S. force levels to combat the insurgency. The top U.S. commander there is warning the war could be lost without more troops.

Obama said he won't make a decision on sending in more troops, though, until he completes a comprehensive review of the war effort and settles on his next strategy.

"I'm going to be asking some very hard questions," Obama said.

Obama's visit made him the first sitting president to appear on Letterman's program. He had been on Letterman's show five times before, though, most recently in September 2008.

The White House said it was a good way for him to reach yet another audience as Obama wraps up a blitz of TV appearances, trying mainly to build support for his health care plan.

As president, Obama also went on NBC's "Tonight" show when it was hosted by Jay Leno.

After the taping, the president returned to his midtown Manhattan hotel and quietly emerged a while later in gym clothes and a baseball cap. His destination: the church across the street for some basketball with his aides.

Tomorrow starts Obama's main mission in New York: His participation in the United Nations General Assembly.

It seems to me Letterman is nothing more than a mere mouthpiece for the liberals. He kisses Obama's behind every time he is on his show. Then, Letterman turns around and relentlessly rails on Sarah Palin. I mean, what is the point? What did Palin do to him? He apologized once for his idiotic remarks, but then he is right back at it again. In my opinion, it is inappropriate for an adult male to continually harp on a woman, making fun of her kids and her family. What Palin's husband should do is meet up with Letterman sometime and make that stupid gap between Letterman's front teeth a little wider by putting his fist through it. Letterman should grow up and display a little more taste. Stop picking on women you aging late night talk show host...

Barrack is the official candidate for Wall-Street.
His plan to regulate the private banks is to give the regulating power to the private banks (federal reserve)

Hey Obama, get back in the office. We're tired of seeing you not doing your job.

President Obama is doing his job with all the public appearances. It is refreshing to see a man who is capable of multi-tasking and ready, willing and able to show the world that it understands his job. It is a refreshing change after George Bush to finally have a President with a high IQ who is fully engaged in fixing a multitude of problems.

Did you notice how much higher Letterman sits than his guests? And Obama is tall. It is an overpowering move.

It's so refreshing to have a president who is thoughtful, articulate and most of all calm and rational. I love that he still has faith in the ordinary person's common sense, especially after seeing such bad behavior this summer in town halls.

He made me remember why I voted for him. Thank Mr. President.

As much as he might not do, are you sure you want to sit out the next Presidential election to let a Bush-like or Bush-worse Republican do even less for us and greater harm our country. Elections are a zero sum game. Obama loses and whatever disappointments we experienced under his leadership would be a return to despair under his opponent.

Who want's a conservative with all the freedom, liberty and self determination they endorse? Bush was a liberal in many ways and those ways were his downfall. He spent and built government with a liberal like glee. I'm surprised you don't adore him. Elect a true conservative and things will get better.

The president was great. He always comes through, I just love his style. They will always be people that disagree but what made this country great is not the angry mobs but the decent people that wanted a great society. The majority of Americans are decent people and that has always been what has made the world love this country. You never here people praise John Wilkes Booth or Bull Conner or McCarthey or Wallace, its always been Lincoln, MLK and all the people that make us so proud of our country.

Obama will jump in front of the camera more than Jessi Jackson. That would be a good Saturday Night Live bit - Obama and Jackson scuffling to get in front of the camera.

Obama on Letterman last night, and the problem with his solution:

LETTERMAN: Whenever you invoke GB or Canada, people start to shudder, "Oh it's socialism" -- I'm not a socialist, but it doesn't sound that bad to me.

OBAMA: It doesn't sound bad to Canadians, they're perfectly happy with their system. But each country is different. It's not just the Canadians and the English that have got their own systems, you've got every other advanced nation that provides coverage for all of its folks. Some of them do it through the kind of plan we're proposing, which is we help people buy insurance in the private marketplace. Some folks like GreatBritain, they actually control the entire system. Some folks, like the Canadians, they run it like a 'Medicare-for-all' system, so that government pays but it's still private doctors & hospitals. So there are a whole bunch of different ways of doing it, & what we're saying is that we can find a uniquely American way to accomplish this.

===================================

What's so special about Americans in need of affordable quality health care that we need a "uniquely American" system?

I'd like to know which public relations firm came up with that term, that spin of "a uniquely American system", and how much the American taxpayers got charged for it.

SinglePayerUniversalHealthcare, aka MedicareForAll is what we need.

Do you repubs think by coming on here and knocking the president, that you'll get any converts? this isn't foxnews or foxnation, people are not brain dead on here and we appreciate and are thankful that our Potus is a clever guy, dont even try and fault him already, because he has alot to correct after 8 years of Bush madness, the country will give him time to sort out the mess. He's already put the stock market back on its feet and auto industry or was you a McCain dim wit who still think the fundementals of the economy was better back then?

Republicans don't necessarily look for converts.

They live in this bubble of delusion, all of them looking alike, talking alike, tea partying together, everyone tuned into FOX together, and inevitably they begin to think that they represent everyone. So they assume that there're enough of them already, and that all they need to do is to just hold their forces intact.

This is why they have no problem offending blacks, Hispanics, gays and occasionally, even women. They don't think they need anyone but themselves.

The problem is that they don't seem to understand that "themselves" is becoming smaller and smaller.

Obama was worried right down to the wire - and it was not much of a victory given he had the press in his pocket and a weak challenger.

Here's the facts, genius. Liberals are about 30% of the voters. Conservatives are about 30% of the voters. If you get your crayon out and do some figurin you will discover that the other 40% are independents who don't care if you are Obama or Bush. They elect the president and they wanted change so they got it. They did it when Clinton was president after two years. Question is, is Obama going to change or just be more of the same.
