Rice

Those in Congress who would like to see the U.S. begin to pull out of Afghanistan don't have a supporter in former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

In a new interview with Fortune Magazine, Rice offered extremely sharp criticism of the idea of withdrawal and painted the consequences of this course of action with an almost Cheneyesque bluntness.

"The last time we left Afghanistan, and we abandoned Pakistan," she said, "that territory became the very territory on which Al Qaeda trained and attacked us on September 11th. So our national security interests are very much tied up in not letting Afghanistan fail again and become a safe haven for terrorists.

"It's that simple," she declared, "if you want another terrorist attack in the U.S., abandon Afghanistan."

As the Washington Post reported Monday, Obama is rethinking all aspects of the U.S. strategy in the Afghanistan in light of the disputed presidential election, an increase in U.S. casualties and waning public support here in America.

In the interview, Rice did acknowledge the recent election as a setback. But she argued that our own experience with democracy proved that it takes time to get things right: "Our democracy wasn't so perfect at the beginning either," she said, citing her own family's experience in the pre-Civil Rights era.

Rice's comments come at a time when the talk of the threat of a possible terrorist attack in the U.S. has re-emerged following a series of arrests in Denver and New York related to an alleged bomb plot. "Counterterrorism officials have issued security bulletins to police around the nation about terrorists' desire to attack stadiums, entertainment complexes and hotels," the AP reported today.

Terrorists will attack us no matter what we do. We can't stop them by fighting random Muslims. One may argue that these are not just random Muslims. I won't be convinced. People from northern Pakistan and across that border with Afghanistan are born warriors and weaponsmithing is as common as racism is here in America. Remember who coined the term "Al Queda"? The reasons given for our country's armed conflicts are weak obfuscations for war profiteering. There also seems to be an anti-islamic agenda on the side. People who join the U.S. armed service to fight these wars are paying for their mistake. Meanwhile Ms. Rice doesn't lose anything from their suffering. How easy it is for her to say these scary things. I better go git ma gun. Uncle Sam needs me to protect the women folk!

Why is a blatant liar still allowed to hold a high office? What happened to the ethics committees in this country? And is this not a reflection on some fundamental problems of a corrupt government

It's pretty simple, she did nothing wrong. Remember only one member of congress voted against the war. No charges have ever been filed against her or anyone for providing false information to congress on either war. Remember we have a democratic congress, if she had done anything wrong they would have found it.

"F**k Sad dam. we're taking him out." President Bush, March 2002.

Case closed this is why we went to Iraq. As I have stated many times before because of an old grudge between George W. Bush Sr. and Sad dam. I hope that the GOP and all it's supporters are happy. This is the real reason why we left Afghanistan and went to Iraq.

How any of these tr0lls could jump up say that she's right now without condeming her for leaving Afghanistan in the first place is really a joke. She didn't speak up when we left, nobody went and asked her for her opinion now. She had a chance to do the right thing or leave office like Colin Powell did because Bush was wrong, she didn't. Her advice now is about as useless as a gnat!

Conda-sleza Rice! Condasending Rice. She keeps telling the same old lies. Me thinks she has property in Afganistan that needs defending and thinks American blood is still hers to let spill. She should be investigated for her part in war crimes along with her ex-bosses!

Republicans want Obama to stay in Afghanistan so this will be another issue against Obama in the 2012 elections. They didn't care much about Afghanistan when they were in office. It's almost 8 years, is it going to take another 8 years, and to do what? What's the mission?

Genghis Khan could not hold onto Afghanistan. Neither will the United States

So we leave, and the Taliban take over the entire country again, or spend another ten years annhialating everything two stories tall to seize power again. They outlaw everything and anything that allows women to pretend they are human beings. They kill millions of totally innocent people, AGAIN. They keep blowing up priceless artifacts of antiquity because they don't fit some 8th century Islamic view of the world, and...

...but you're fine with it, because no Americans are getting hurt, or footing the bill.

Wow. Right neighborly, governor!

Let there be no doubt tr0lly's the only l!@ ar for 8 yrs is Bush.

"Taliban no longer is in existence." President Bush, September 27, 2004
"I never said the Taliban was eliminated." President Bush, December 15, 2008.

"As a result of the United States military, Taliban no longer is in existence. And the people of Afghanistan are now free." President Bush, September 27, 2008.

It is true, as I have said many times, that Saddam Hussein was not connected to the 9/11 attacks. But the decision to remove Saddam from power cannot be viewed in isolation from 9/11." President Bush, December 5, 2008.

She is nothing more than a token. Why didn't she say something or resign when we left Afghanistan and went ot Iraq? Don't try to make her out to be anything more than what she is a glory, money grubbing, accolade drawing politician. Colin resigned for a reason, and she should have.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:43 AM on 09/23/2009

I think she's right. Afghanistan is a natural home for them under the Taliban. They dont have to deal with the pakistani army or intelligence services that way.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:20 AM on 09/23/2009

That is exactly right, and I'm not agreeing with you because I am Republican. But I never cease to be amazed at the level of hatred on the left. Have you read some of these posts? Man this stuff is ridiculous. And I want to apologize for some of the things I've said about Obama. I just get so mad at the way conservatives are demonized on here, I kind of lash out, and i shouldn't do that. President Obama deserves my respect, though I don't agree with some of his policies.

What are you talking about they are in Afghanistan and they get access to Pakistan via Afghanistan and Pakistan is where everyone is hiding out. Continue to listen to the right wing rhetoric without even picking up a map and you will remain ig_n0_rant.
