Water conservation starts with using to the fullest whatever water we access. A gray water recycling system helps us achieve just that. Installing one in your home can seem complicated, but there are companies that specialize in helping you set up a system that suits your needs.

Actually simple residential graywater systems are now legal in California thanks to a recent change to the building code. The change is State Bill 1258, enacted in early August to address emergency drought conditions. California Graywater Corps is a Los Angeles based company that installs this sort of system, saving tens of thousands of gallons per house per year. These systems can pay for themselves in as little as two years. http://graywatercorps.com

Gray water systems are illegal in most parts of the country.

This is also so not-news it's boring. Gray water systems have been used in Europe for many years. They make absolute sense and should be mandatory - but they are expensive to install and they require a lot of owner upkeep and monitoring, which Americans by and large are not willing to do.

Of course it's all moot until it becomes legal to use gray water.
