Chemicals

divinecaroline.com:

Most people don't think anything of putting chemicals on their skin. You may think as long as the moisturizer has a label that states "with shea butter," it's good for you. Think again!

I agree that often the difference between natural and man made is overdone. Nicotine is all natural and we all know how good that is for you. But the chemicals that they are dumping into the environment are way too much!

More junk "reporting".

Things to avoid...why exactly? Some lose associations involving words like cancer, found on obscure internet web pages (just propagating the same bull-oney).

Parabens are found in fruits, as well as other "natural" foods. SLS is soap. It's been used for a long time. Yes, we all know how soap is an irritant, but it is not a carcinogen. And, again, rehashing the same internet bull-oney on propylene glycol...used in nearly everything, for a very long time now.

Maybe someone can address the number and types of compounds found in "natural products" for us sometime. What is in a mushroom, for instance. List all the compounds in the mushroom you have no problem eating or smearing all over yourself, feeling reassured because it is "natural". As if there are no toxic metabolic metabolites, or spurious growth hormones that are reactive in some of our pathways.

Synthetics are made, then purified. The method is understood. The purification is quantified. We have a really good idea of what is in the mixture.

You have absolutely no idea what is contained in a "natural product". None. There are far, far too many and the variation between sources (species) is unquantifiably great. No purity analysis. No quantifiable data.

To accept 'natural' as safe every time, in all instances is a purely leap of faith.

thank you for the dose of common sense. I was about to write an angry post about how (expected) detergent-like effects don't make a carcinogen out of a detergent. Honestly I did not even know where to start. Why most articles in LIVING dealing with 'science' mostly foster paranoia?

So, did either of you two have a kid who broke out in weird rashes for now clear reason? And have this go on for a couple years? And go to the doctor about it and get nowhere with what was going on?

Well, I did. It took a lot of work, with no help from any other source. It took a detailed process of elimination to figure out what the common components were in everything my kid was exposed to. Do you know what it came down to?

Parabens and Yellow 5.

Once I determined that those were associated with the problem I looked them up. Guess what? People do have problems with them. You may not. Consider yourself lucky for that.

It sure would have been nice to run across something like that early on instead of having to wait for two years.

I agree that all things "natural" are not necessarily best for skincare, etc. However, there is evidence that a number of synthetic ingredients used in personal care products are carcinogens, mutagens, etc. There is unfortunately little regulation of the cosmetic industry.

By the way, SLS is not soap. Soap is created when a base (lye) is combined with a fatty acid. SLS is a detergent.

This is true. It is a detergent (not a soap) and there is a difference. My apologies.

if hemp were legal we could making hemp oil based products.
I was warned years ago alcohols of any type in skin cream was bad for you.

Forgot about the fluoride in our toothpaste and drinking water... only in the U.S. do we have corporations making deals to poison our own water supply so they don't have to pay waste disposal fees.

please look up the effects of fluorine on tooth enamel before making these statements. Fluorine is added on purpose. Populations in regions with low natural fluorine content in drinking water have higher teeth deterioration although adding fluorine to drinking water is controversial compared to using fluoride in toothpaste.

You're right, of course, Equianimi.

I see there's already two misinformation representatives working this thread.

Too bad for them no matter how they spin, people like you will be seeing to it truth comes out on all fronts including this matter, too.
