There is so much to enjoy in this piece on Enviroknow, in which a blogger contacts Senator Lisa Murkowski's office to ask about a bogus set of talking points her office has been promulgating over cap-and-trade legislation. The blogger ends up getting into a tiff with Robert Dillon, a Murkowski staffer who also serves as the Republican Communications Director for the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. You really should read it all. But to drill down on a small point, I really had a good laugh at the moment in the conversation when Dillon reveals that his working concept of what a "reporter" is literally amounts to pure stenography.

After just a few minutes, Mr. Dillon became openly exasperated. In a comical display of his understanding of journalism, which was strikingly similar to a Stephen Colbert parody, Mr. Dillon said:

"Why can't you just listen to me and write down what I say?"

Seconds later, he shouted:

"You're not a reporter!"

Moments later, Dillon exasperatedly admits that Murkowski's "talking point[s] on costs of climate legislation has nothing to with legislation that is actually being considered."

Later in the conversation, after I had repeatedly pointed out that the documents Senator Murkowski's claims were based on had nothing whatsoever to do with any legislation Congress has actually considered, came the admission:

"We are not talking about Waxman-Markey."

At this point, Mr. Dillon became openly angry and began shouting:

"It will never pass the Senate. It will never be introduced in the Senate. Don't you know how this works?"

Sadly, this tends to indicate that Dillon's belief that reporters are supposed to "listen to [him] and write down what [he says]" is one that's been instilled in him by reporters.

He is not wrong...
laziness again...
the new brand of worker...

those who work to think...
have been taught and learned themselves...
through years of notetaking...all over the place...

that you can learn some things while just listening...
but you are looking up...
and meeting the eyes....the facial expressions...the surroundings...

and when you listen to the tape
you will hear the words...
and you will hear the emphasis...
but you will miss the feeling of earnest demonstrated on key words...
words that the speaker...like speakers in the past before him...is willing you to write on paper...

the
KEY WORDS...

one day we will find they mean ten or eleven things besides the message we are receiving at that particular spot...

I am confused because if staffman said, "Why can't you just listen to me and write down what I say?"

and the reporter wrote down, "Why can't you just listen to me and write down what I say?"

then the reporter listened to him and wrote down what he said.

so why is the staffman so angry?

Don't most reporters know to at least make pretend-scratches on their notepad when they're ignoring what their interview subject says?

Funny. "Why can't you just listen to me and write down what I say?"

It's apparently all in the family of Alaska politics, wanting the dialogue to be one way only.

Sarah Palin said nearly exactly the same thing July 7th to Andrea Mitchell when she invited NBC and 4 other networks up to Alaska to watch Palin pretend she knew something about fishing.

Palin stamped her waders and yelled 'You're not listening to me!" to Mitchell.

Keep in mind, Lisa, daughter of Senator Frank Murkowski, was a member of the Alaska Legislature.
When 'Daddy' Frank was elected Governor of Alaska, he determined that Lisa was the most qualified person, in the state, to fill his vacancy in the US Senate.
Alaska voters got really 'smart' and dumped Frank (and his executive jet) for Sarah. Now, Sarah quits and Lisa is a United States Senator, with no involvement in 'Bridges'?
Politics stinks in Alaska too.

Your headline has me in a dither because I used to cover federal courts for a wire service.

You can't take a tape recorder into a federal courtroom

Am I gonna have to take, "Reporter," off my resume?

I can still haz a byline and dateline though?

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post about CBS standing for "Credulous Breathless Stenography." The lapdog tendencies of the Village media have turned the fourth estate into a Washington publicity outfit. Sad, sad, sad.

As a former reporter, I can tell you that my publisher and editors often became uncomfortable when I came back to the newsroom with some very irksome truth. As a result of publishing it, they might well get an earfull call from the very politician who axed himself or herserlf publicly in front of my notepad -- and they might hear negatively from the so-called public (friends of the pol, I suspect). Some of the time, the editors and publishers didn't have the hutzpah to really stand upright -- but a few times they did -- I'm still grateful for those right decisions. And they're not as easy to make as you might suppose. But, when we opted for the truth -- and when we did our homework enough to know it was the truth -- we made at least small difference for our readers and our communities. That is small town Journalism at its best. Journalism is about asking the right questions -- and these are developed from research and listening to what was said before the question. Journalists are not employed to record press releases dictated by those they "interview." I fear my experiencehas been replicated across the country. By contrast, one of my fellow journalists in my very newsroom was quite inept. We couldn't get him to go to the police blotter and come back with stories copied correctly from the cops -- who were better writers than the lad in question. Today, he's an "analyst" on

Anger is a secondary emotion and they use it to cover up their inadequacy. Then again no one likes to be confronted with their own dishonesty.
