Stadiums, Hotels Warned To Watch For Terrorists

Zazi

TOM HAYS and DEVLIN BARRETT   09/22/09 11:24 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK — The government expanded a terrorism warning from transit systems to U.S. stadiums, hotels and entertainment complexes as investigators searched for more suspects Tuesday in a possible al-Qaida plot to set off hydrogen-peroxide bombs hidden in backpacks.

Police bolstered their presence at high-profile locations. Extra officers with bulletproof vests, rifles and dogs were assigned to spots such as Grand Central Terminal in New York. Plainclothes officers handed out fliers at a nearby hotel with a warning in large block letters: "If you suspect terrorism, call the NYPD."

The warnings come amid an investigation centering on Najibullah Zazi, a 24-year-old Denver airport shuttle driver who authorities say received al-Qaida explosives training in Pakistan and was found entering New York City two weeks ago with bomb-making instructions on his computer.

Zazi's arrest in Colorado last week touched off the most intense flurry of government terror warnings and advisories to come to light since President Barack Obama took office.

Though Zazi is charged only with lying to the government, law enforcement officials said he may have been plotting with others to detonate backpack bombs on New York trains in a scheme similar to the attacks on the London subway and Madrid's rail system. Backpacks and cell phones were seized in raids on apartments Zazi visited in New York.

"It's not totally clear to us at this point what it is they had in mind, though I think it is clear that something very serious and something very organized was under way," Attorney General Eric Holder told CBS.

Two law enforcement officials speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss details of the investigation told The Associated Press that more than a half-dozen people were being scrutinized in the alleged plot. The FBI said "several individuals in the United States, Pakistan and elsewhere" are being investigated.

"There's a lot more work to be done," said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, cautioning that the probe was still in its early stages.

In two bulletins sent to police departments Monday and obtained by the AP, federal counterterrorism officials urged law enforcement and private companies to be vigilant at stadiums, entertainment complexes and hotels.

The bulletin on stadiums noted that an al-Qaida training manual specifically lists "blasting and destroying the places of amusement, immorality and sin ... and attacking vital economic centers." Counterterrorism officials are also advising police officers to be on the lookout for any possible bomb-making at self-storage facilities, noting that terrorists have used such places to build bombs.

The bulletins came just days after similar warnings about the vulnerability of the nation's mass transit systems and the danger of hydrogen peroxide-based explosives.

In a statement, the FBI and Homeland Security said that while the agencies "have no information regarding the timing, location or target of any planned attack, we believe it is prudent to raise the security awareness of our local law enforcement partners regarding the targets and tactics of previous terrorist activity."

A half-dozen terrorism warnings and alerts have been issued in the past week amid the investigations in New York and Denver. Bulletins – particularly about hotels as possible terrorist targets – are common, and often don't make news. In fact, they are so common that many Americans in the past few years have accused Washington of fearmongering.

Some Americans were blase about the latest warnings.

"If it happens, it happens," said Lynn Calhoun, an Indianapolis computer programmer who visited Conseco Fieldhouse, the home of the NBA's Indiana Pacers, to buy a ticket for a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert there in December. "Where are you going to go? What are you going to do? You can't just go and hide out in Canada for a month."

At Citi Field in New York, where the Mets were playing the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, Dana Brand said he once canceled a trip because of a security warning, but "I found out later that it was all bogus."

So when it comes to the latest warning, the Newtown, Conn., resident said: "I don't pay any attention to it."

James Orash waited for a commuter train outside Camden Yards, Baltimore's ballpark, with his wife.

"If they're going to hit us, there, that's where they're going to hit us," Orash said, looking at the stadium. "They already took two buildings down once. Eventually, that's what's going to happen. If they hit us next time, it's going to be big."

New York's transit agency said it increased the police presence around the city. The vigilance is playing out during a meeting of the U.N. General Assembly, with Obama and other leaders from around the world in town. Also, thousands of policymakers and other visitors are arriving in Pittsburgh for a two-day economic summit of wealthy and developing nations.

New York's Police Department produced a 10-minute videotape it has begun showing at roll call instructing officers to be on the lookout for potential bomb-making ingredients. The video puts special emphasis on hydrogen peroxide – a common ingredient in homemade explosives – as well as cans of acetone and bags of ammonium nitrate.

Stadiums around the country provided few specifics about how they were responding but stressed that they have been vigilant ever since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

"We're aware of the memo," said Bob Moore, spokesman for the Kansas City Chiefs, who play at Arrowhead Stadium. "It just underscores the high levels of security we've had and will continue to maintain. We've been in that mode for some time."

In New Jersey, home of Giants Stadium, the state homeland security office said there will be an increased police presence at key locations, random bag searches and greater use of surveillance cameras and undercover operations.

At MGM Mirage, which owns two arenas and the most casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, spokesman Gordon Absher said the alert "encouraged us to remain vigilant." No protocols were changed, he said.

Stuart Pringle, a 55-year-old businessman from Zimbabwe, was visiting Las Vegas for a week and said the security warnings wouldn't change his plans.

"We all live with some degree of risk in our lives," Pringle said. "This country can't afford to stop the quality of life that it provides. I have absolutely no fear."

HP seems to be deleting my posts!... So much freedom of speech from the loony-left!

Anyways...If america truly wishes to win the war-on-terror... then it must pull itself by the bootstraps and make the hard decision to use the Ultimate Weapon.

We should not be in the loosing battle of "Nation Building"!

The American government needs to drop at least 50-100 Nuclear Bombs over all the major cities from Pakistan-Afghanistan-Iran-Iraq-Saudi Arabia-Jordan-Syria-Lebanon-Turkey-Egypt-Libya- Morocco-Tunisia-Algeria-finally-Mecca.

I know this will cause the deaths of at least 50-100 Million Moslems. But it needs to be done in order to save Humanity! - Sometimes a little evil needs to be done in order to achieve the greater good.

We should learn from Israel in how to deal with this enemy; then, in order to quell the anger of the moslems living here... we need to take the unfortunate decision of rounding up all the local Moslem populations living in the West (both "secular" & extremist) and "process" them to make sure they will not be a threat. I recommend putting a micro-chip in every remaining moslem who is deemed a "secularist" here, so we can track their movement.

This needs to be done in order to protect our freedoms!

Please note: I am not being racist! - Every peace loving moslem will support my proposal, otherwise they are with the terrorists!

Not buying into the whole terror thing and I will tell you why. My brother is a reporter with a very well known reporting agency. If this was real, we would have gotten a head's up as we did with 911. Nothing, I mean nada came our way this time around. No, do not fly, take a trip, nothing. This is a means to get the public distracted so they can do a back door draft, get thier helathcare bill passed without our consent, silence the dissenters, try to use fear to justify this fake war. Its right out of the bush cheney playbook gang. Go back and re read the play book, all that is missing is lurch sounding the warning bell. No folks, this one is a con job. If we were to get attacked, there would be no warning, no amateurs, nothing to track them. It would just happen out of the blue. That is how real terrorists work. Our government knows all about that one, as does black water. Peel the onion, these guys are not who they say they are.

Gee, let;s examine this one shall we? Genrals want more troops in aphganistan to keep that illegal war going, sound familiar? Healthcare isn't going well, and they need to quickly pass something under the wire without the public's notice, so its a wag the dog, Obama's ratings are in the trotter, and he needs fear tactics to get Americans on the Patriot band wagon. Damn, this is right out of the Bush/ Cheney play book. Do they really not think we see through all this crap? Get real. Not only is this sad and pathetic, its just foolish. They cried wolf so many times, the public just does not care anymore. We had enough lies, games, fear tactics. We want out jobs back at a living wage, singl'e payer healthcare, want our homes back, our kids back in colleges without fear they can't get student loans.
Obama needs to stop playing republican games, get this country back before it is too late. he is playing and getting played a dangerous game.

Probably my imagination that whenever the public gets to a certain level of concern about our presence in Afghanistan/Iraq, the "terror warnings" suddenly go up.

I seem to recall the last time pubs accused a Democratic President of "wagging the dog", it was Bill Clinton for launching cruise missiles. They chanted "No War for Monica" and accused Clinton of trying to divert attention from his domestic scandal. Anyone remember the name of that terrorist President Clinton was trying to kill? Ever heard of a guy named Osama Bin Laden?

This is another case of the U.S. security apparatus arresting citizens and non-citizens whether the U.S is at peace or at war. (always at war) These gentlemen will be released without charges as time will prove.

I don't think so.
08:38 AM on 09/23/2009
You are not someone I'd ever rely on. This gentleman said he trained with alQaeda in the Tribal Areas (although later said he was just visiting his wife); had close access to the Denver Air Terminal through his job as a shuttle driver; drove to NYC on 9/10 with his laptop containing notes on bomb-making (although he said the trip was to handle business related to a coffee cart he owned there); had a videotape of Grand Central where many of the 9/11 visitors would be passing through, and handled batteries and a scale in the apartment of a friend who also tried to rent a large truck about the same time.

Now it could all be coincidence. And maybe people who work at the Denver Airport normally own coffee carts in NYC and maybe he videotaped Grand Central as part of in-depth analysis on where to put that coffee cart which was going to be moved there by that big rental truck. And the notes on bomb making were accidentally downloaded as part of a religious book and are not really in his hand-writing.

Who knows. We'll see.

I notice that 2976 people died as a result of terrorist attacks on Sept 11 2001. I also notice that the population of the United States in 2000 was 281,421,906. This means that if another attack occurred and I was still living in the USA, my chances of survival would be 99.9989%. I like those odds, and really don't care that much if there is another attack. This is all a bunch of hype over very little.
07:51 AM on 09/23/2009
Well if the deaths of 3,000 people is cool with you, then you might recall that there was a trillion dollar loss in the stock market triggered by 9/11. Also the war in Afghanistan; that's a nice memento of 9/11. So mass murder, financial ruin and war are not enough for you to care? That's pretty craven.

You're short sighted and ignorant. If people like you control our security we will eventually get hit with somethihng that will make 9/11 look like stubbed toe. Then Mr. "I like those odds" might feel different. Maybe not.

As someone who was there on 9/11, for New Yorkers, this does cause a certain degree of nervousness...where do I stay away from? Hotels, tunnels, busy subway stations, Port Authority, Penn and Grand Central Stations?? Regardless of how real the threat, those of us in New York area, though trying to live our lives despite these possible hazards, still must register this in the back of our heads and make adjustments accordingly...supposedly the NYPD and MTA have not exactly been on the same page with this...not a good thing, either...but I will be noticing to see what is happening in the subway stations or at the terminals I use to get in and out of town.

Handling this as a law enforcement matter is smart...however, if anything WAS to happen (heaven forbid) you KNOW that people like Cheney or Condi would be harping on blaming Obama at a drop of a hat...shameful, as always...
04:11 AM on 09/23/2009
so we can all come back from Afghanistan and Iraq now right? he trained with Al Qaeda while we were over there, he still managed to get here and plan a bombing...and we caught him with a little help from our global friends. pretty much proves the criminal/police process efficacy over the military model in this case, yes? whew...now we can afford healthcare...
04:25 AM on 09/23/2009
The story today is that NYPD botched the whole thing.
07:54 AM on 09/23/2009
No. An informant told one of the suspects that the NYPD was on to him.

Informants sometimes do that, religious ones probably more than others.

Sometimes there are bad guys out there. As a mother with children riding public transit in large cities, I'm glad of it...glad that more resources can be placed at critical locations when there is a reason to believe danger has increased.

"Counterterrorism officials are also advising police officers to be on the lookout for any possible bomb-making at self-storage facilities, noting that terrorists have used such places to build bombs"

Fighting in Afghanistan will really stop some jihadist at your local U-Lock-It Self-Storage...
08:04 AM on 09/23/2009
It will lessen the freedom they have to be train in Afghanistan and it will help protect a population that, during Taliban rule, crossed over the mountains in numbers over 1 million to seek safety in refugee camps in Pakistan. Those people largely returned home after we , with the Northern Alliance, chased the Taliban out of critical areas in 2002.

You're smart enough to know that any sucessful strategy involves both offense and defense.

Now, if you don't believe there are people out there who want to kill you, then don't worry about it.

I watched the Pentagon burn with my own two eyes. It does change ones perspective on the whole issue of terrorism. It infuriates me completely that someone from Texas or California would mock the real threat. Watching it on TV is not the same as seeing it live.

Just one weekend before 9-11, I visited NYC. We drove around downtown looking for the twin towers, I know tourists, we marveled at the size of the buildings only to watch them fall.
01:21 AM on 09/23/2009
