LOS ANGELES — Nearly 40 years after breaking up, The Beatles are still breaking records for album sales.

EMI Group PLC says consumers in North America, Japan and the U.K. bought more than 2.25 million copies of the Fab Four's re-mastered albums in the first five days after their Sept. 9 release.

Most of the records were broken for most simultaneous titles in the top-selling charts by a single artist.

On Billboard magazine's pop catalog chart, for example, the band had 16 titles in the top 50, including all 14 re-mastered CDs and two box sets.

The Beatles' original U.K. studio albums were re-mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London over four years and released to coincide with the sale of "The Beatles: Rock Band" on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.

I had a friend in his early twenty's who thought all the Beatles were about was "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "Yesterday." He played in a speed metal band and his drum kit was massive with a double bass drum, etc. I made him a mix tape with songs like "You Never Give Me Your Money" and other heavy and lesser known songs and it really did change his life. He is now a full blown Beatles freak, owns everything they ever did on cd and dvd, and his drum kit has been scaled back to 5 pieces like Ringo's. He still likes metal but it takes a back seat to the Beatles. I'd advise anyone who does not like the Beatles or knows someone who doesn't to have a listen to the later era stuff.

Michael Jackson estate owns 50% of the catalog? So they stand to make major bank off this huh?

I grew up in the 60's, and The Beatles were a huge part of my life. They are far and away my all time favorite. While I like Paul, I don't care for the music he's put out since. I always wonder what John's music would be like today. When I see the old pics of them it's still hard for me to believe John and George are gone...

Check out Paul's "Flaming Pie" album. It's from 1997 but it is far and away his finest post Beatles recording in my opinion.

I absolutely adore the music of the Beatles. When I was a kid, I would save my babysitting money and buy a 45 every time a new one was released. Unfortunately my parents had a fire and I lost my whole collection...Can't wait to buy the new box set!

The Rock Band game worked. It got more people to buy The Beatles CDs.

I'm of the right "generation" to remember and adore the Beatles (I was 13 in 1963), but I'm amazed that my 14 year old son is also a huge fan. Maybe it wasn't just a passing fad and maybe these guys really were something special and timeless.

Basically, they never went away. They have been popular with young people since the 70s. I always think of Jim Morrison, who thought that the 60s were just a flowering of music and fashion that would not last but would always be remembered. The Stones and Hendrix have big fan bases among the young.

after listening to the beatles with every new release over the more than 40 years i have to say , the release of the "beatles rock band" is the game changer. this is a true re-mastering by someone named giles... it is literally too good to be true. you will have to hear it to believe it.

technically for now but he has willed most of the catalogue back to Paul McCartney so he (retroactively) should make a ton on this once the full will has been executed.

Paul wishes Jacko willed the catalog to him. Didn't happen. It is owned by his estate and Sony 50/50. But the Beatles still get performance royalties. They are all fabulously wealthy with Paul worth in excess of a billion dollars.

Much as I love Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road, I think my favorite period is 64-65 (Beatles for Sale, Rubber Soul, Revolver). The growth as songwriters is amazing, they wrote pure pop confections that will never be equaled. The remasters are gorgeous!

Whoever got the rights to that stuff after MJ died, is milking it for what its worth. Beatles are everywhere, online, starbucks, video games, etc...

Why the resurgence of the legendary group? Capitilizing on brain dead consumer culture.

Lennon is rolling in his grave

Yes, I'm sure Lennon is rolling in his grave because his band is still huge 40 years after they broke up. There are a lot of examples of our brain dead consumer culture. This is not one of them.

Yes - I totally agree with Brettb3 - It's an amazing achievement, the Beatles are legendary!

There are a million examples of 'brain dead' consumer culture (all reality tv for a start), but this is re-mastered music, being bought by fans and a whole new generation of music lovers. Real musicians, real music...really great!
