Washington Post:

The result was that The Post agreed to a one-day delay in publicizing the report by Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, and that the paper's top editor engaged in a lengthy discussion Sunday with three top Defense Department officials in a meeting at the Pentagon. The Post published the report, which Woodward had obtained, on Monday.

Something smells fishy.

If the WH wanted a delay why did they give (leak) it to Woodward in the first place? Why not just release it to him later?

You aren't very perceptive. The WH didn't leak it. A progressive in the WH who doesn't want a repeat of Veit Nam, Iraq, etc leaked it to stop Obama from spending trillions of dollars to blow up some camels in the desert and fomenting hatred of America.

"One effing day" it may be, but it is still government dictating how a supposedly free press operates. This story should upset anyone on the political spectrum who really values the First Amendment.

This is not a new story. The commanders have been asking for more troops since last year. I'm not sure why this was even classified.

Is there a news organization anywhere in the world more beholden to the powers that be than the Washington Post? And does anyone doubt that if Watergate had happened in this decade, or the last, that it would have been broken somewhere else?

Holding stories, pay for play, the world's biggest access w h or e (Woodward), Charles Krauthammer and Bill Kristol on the editorial page. ...

At least FOX dosn't make any real attempt to cover up its nonsense.

Remember, the order to withhold this news story came from President Obama's pentagon, led by Bush/Cheney retread Robert Gates.

Barack Obama = more of the same Bush/Cheney BS

It doesn't matter. The Post is under no obligation to follow government orders. That's what state run papers in places like North Korea and Venezuela and Iran do.

Bear in mind that it is widely suspected that Woodward's source for the leak was someone high in the Pentagon. Many of his sources are. So there is even a chance that one of the Pentagon officers who asked for the delay was in fact the one who had leaked the document to him in the first place! Even so Woodward is smart enough that if he does the one day delay that they are asking for he would have made a friend, and a freind is a possible future source.

No respect for Woodward.

I remember in 2004 hearing him on NPR talking about how Bush was a fairly standup guy and the stuff that he did was nowhere near on par with Nixon's crimes.

To be fair, 04 was pre Katrina and before both the Economy and Iraq made a turn for the worst.

Anyone who wouldn't leak this is irresponsible. Someone has to stop us from waging endless counterproductive wars across the globe. We are getting war fatigue and will have trouble if we get into an important war. And when I say Afganistan is unimportant i mean exactly that, its just a staging ground for the armies of extremists flowing out of Pakistan. They are being churned out of Madrassas faster then we could dream of killing them.

Washington Post's Howard Kurtz reports that President Obama resorting to Bush/Cheney tactics to muzzle the media and strongarm them into holding back information to the American people.

In related news, President Obama seeks to expand the USA Patriot Act, send massive troops to Afghanistan, and continue the war in Iraq.

Keep the "change" America needs a President...

You are deluded, Hillary does not have enough Charisma to win the nomination. She couldn't help putting her foot in her mouth when some audience member misspoke asking a question during her "good will" tour of Africa. She needs a few decades of seasoning and better self control.

The press has always done this. I don't see a problem. It is "traditional" for the press to cave to DOD requests especially during a time of war.

Even very long wars? So far we are 4 years longer than WWII. How long does a war have to drag on before the press stops kissing ass?

The press is beholden to the DOD. Haven't you figured it out by now.
