This June doctors were shocked to discover that Arkansas native Julia Grovenburg was pregnant with not one, but two children. The second, smaller child was unexpectedly located by doctors and is thought to have been conceived two-and-a-half weeks after the first one. The children are not fraternal twins, and both are expected to have separate due dates.

I respect anyone's right to speak their mind, but I personally know Julia and her family. They are nice, normal, people who just had something extraordinary happen to them. The comments about Julia's weight are uncalled for and rude, did you ever stop to think that her double pregnancy has added a lot to her weight? I'm happy for Julia and Todd and wish them only the best, they are bringing two babies into the world that will be loved and cherished, and yes, Julia has private insurance, she is not on state assistance, so none of you will be paying for these babies. If you're reading this, Julia, hang in there, and don't let someone's remarks on this website ruin your moment.

This is interesting. Assuming it's not an error on the part of the doctors (a really big weight differential between the two fetuses would suggest it wasn't), this would be a documented case of superfetation.

A canadian study some years back suggested this was a lot more common in humans that we ever suspected.

BFD.. conceived a whole 2 weeks apart they "think?" because of size?? Just because they "missed" it? Well duh, trying to do an ultrasound through an obese woman will result in poor readings.

I am a fraternal twin, and my mom was told the same in 1968. She didnt make any news story!
My sister was 4.5 lbs, I was 5 lbs. They think I was conceived first.

So, who cares about this.. she basically has fraternal twins... two eggs two sperm, basically same time.

I won't flog her for being overweight.

I will flog the whole concept of her being able find a guy, get laid (alot apparently), all while being hugely overweight, while I work really hard in terms of maintaining a health weight, and I'm freaking single!

It depends on the couple. None of us knows what our future holds, but I would never want to be single again. Being single is only for the very young, and then not all of them. Any older person who believes that it is better to be single, has some issues.

People can have opinions of them, and some opinions are just to bolster someones self esteem. If a person needs to put someone else down in order to feel better about his/her self, well too bad for that person.

Is there a reason all of you are being *#)@!( about this? I thought this was supposed to be a progressive site. Yes, I agree, people should maintain a healthy weight, the world is overpopulated, etc., but I don't understand why we're all jumping on this poor lady. For me, my progressive politics are about caring about people. This woman did nothing wrong except get knocked up in a way that I'm sure was an accident because no one would ever choose something like that to happen. So stop giving the left a bad name, because you're just making it so the right can accuse us, correctly, of being hateful!!!

I suspect that a lot of negative comments on here about that couple are coming from right wing Christian types. They think nothing of putting someone down who they think of as being less than themselves. True progressives would not stoop to such. If a person thinks that they are progressive, and are filled with hate, then maybe they would be better off on the other side, as the other side can appreciate that a lot more.

Yeah, there's a condition called superfetation where a woman can ovulate more than once a month. It's pretty common in animals but thought to be rare in humans. There's a canadian study that suggests that it may not be so rare (up to 10% of women in their study group).

As for fail-proof birth control, I'm afraid not. Generally speaking, the pill tries to fool the body into thinking it's already pregnant so it doesn't release an egg. But occasionally, the body doesn't respond/is resistant to the chemical signals.
