The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced its nominations. Which five will be inducted in March? We'll have to wait until December to find out, but in the meantime you can vote on the most deserving acts in the slide show below.

To be eligible for nomination into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an act must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. So, no later than 1984 for the current crop of nominees.

This year marks the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 25th anniversary, which it will celebrate with two blowout concerts at Madison Square Garden in October.

ABBA

ABBA is one of the biggest-selling acts in pop-history and first put Sweden on rock’s global map. The four members came together in enchanting, late-1960s post-Euro-hippie fashion – initialed for the two couples, Agnetha ‘Anna’ Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus; and Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid ‘Frida’ Lyngstad.

Poco, the premier country rock band, formed in 1968, and still alive and kickin' 41 years later!

chili peppers! 1989 'mother's milk' is the album i place all the blame on for me being a rock junkie today.
the stooges. we would not have modern rock if it wasn't for the stooges. iggy is the godfather of punk, and punk infuses pretty much everything coming out today.
LL cool J. was never a big fan of him, until he did MTV unplugged. i thought it really showed his talent.
that being said, it'll probably go to ABBA.

How did ABBA get nominated before David Cassidy and The Partridge Family?

With all those legendary Motown acts already inducted, why the hell aren't the Marvelettes and Mary Wells inducted? Are their achievements no less valid than their contemporaries in the Motown stable?

Apparently those who select nominees are too obtuse to see what they already have, as if they can't tell the forest from the trees.

The notion of a "hall of fame" for rock is completely Un-rock-&-roll.

Whether you get "complex symphonic rock" or not, Yes kicked butt in their early years, and are all stellar musicians who can actually play their instruments WELL.

The Yes Album, Fragile and Close to the Edge were integral albums of my youth...

I mean extremely important albums you quite literally played from beginning to end because there was no filler, only pure, great rock.

And you are absolutely right, all of them were incredible, classically-trained musicians.

I was partial to Wakeman and saw him live several times also... Six Wives and most notably, Journey to the Center of the Earth.

So we entertain Abba and Donna Summer while Yes, ELP, Tull, Paul Revere and others remain on the sidelines.

Travesty.

Well, I enjoyed dancing to Donna, and she and Giorgio did some mean-assed Kraftwerk excursions, and, well, 'Dancing Quee'n may be the most incredible piece of pop fluff ever conceived by the devil. But rock? Nope. It's not rock.

I take your points well and agree in spirit. "I Get Up, I Get Down"

'Close to the Edge' is a major work of art.

In order to justify some of these nominations (and indeed, some of the previous inductees) this organization should be named...

The Popular Music Hall of Fame.

Then you could rightfully include some great acts like Sinatra, Patsy Cline, the Grey Ghost, etc.

Seriously, does ANYONE EVER consider ABBA or Donna Summer a "rock" act?

This thing is such a joke.

it probably doesn't make much sense to people who don't know the origins and the outgrowth of rock and roll...do your homework before you comment...makes you seem a lot smarter

I'm not going to get into a whole thing with you about rock and the synthesis of jazz, blues, gospel and country as primary influences, etc., etc., etc.

What I'm saying is this: Some of the acts that are nominated and go into the HoF are analagous to putting a soccer or rugby player into the Pro Football Hall.

And then there's the travesty of those in vs. those not.

Gladys Knight ahead of Jethro Tull? (I know when I think stellar rock acts, I always flip to GK/Pips before Ian Anderson and mates.)

Del Shannon before Yes?

Lloyd Price but not ELP... or Genesis?

Now ABBA?

Give me a break. Are we actually talking about the ROCK AND ROLL Hall of Fame?

I get Jackie Wilson, Muddy Waters, Leadbelly, Dixon, Woody Guthrie and thank God they had enough sense to include Hank Sr. and Chet Atkins. (You should look them up. They were pretty good.)

But along those lines then, where is Barney Kessel, who exerted more influence on rock players (Townsend, Page, Richards) than any other jazz guitarist.

I get it, Dancing Queen, but I dont think you do.

Now take your trite little "...don't know the origins and the outgrowth of rock and roll...", go pop some popcorn, sit down and replay your director's cut of Mamma Mia.

The winner of the 1st ever Best Female Rock Vocalist Grammy went to - Donna Summer.

So, apparently someone does in fact consider her a rock act. Who knew??

The Hollies, The Stooges & The Chantels.

Not listed is Paul Revere and the Raiders, they are definitely overdue for induction.

The Sex Pistols had it right. The Rock and Roll Hal of Fame is a piss stain. Is there anything more remote from the rebellion of rock and roll than a money-making hall of fame, where they want $15k fr a table at the inauguration? The place and the concept is a complete anathema to what rock and roll is all about... sheesh.
