What's Your Reaction?

Robert Greenwald, director of the new film Rethink Afghanistan, appeared on "The Ed Show" Wednesday night to make a case against further troop deployments in that country. Greenwald argued against the knee-jerk use of military force and the deadfast belief that violence makes a safer world.

The issue, as Greenwald put it, is about halting Al Qaeda, who are largely absent in Afghanistan, and not about nation-building. Citing Gen. David Petraeus, Greenwald urged progressives to focus on international police cooperation, not unilateral occupation.

This is Hobson's choice for Obama. All options are suboptimal with dubious outcomes. Sending in the troops will mean siding with the unpopular Karzai & push more people over to the Taliban & ending up like Vietnam or the USSR. Not sending in the troops will have possibility of chaos & civil war with the Taliban as one of the opposing forces. The Taliban coulld grow in strength together with who knows other factions who are anti-American. The war is unwinnable any which way. The only choice may be to cut losses and just contain the Taliban while waiting for the country's internal politics to play out.

Nothing can really be done in this country while those 2 wars continually drain off resources. Even with the economy so bad here, all they can think about is maintaining Bush's wars.
