This is devastating. I know things like this happen every day, but to witness this poor boys life being taken from him is outrageous. My heart goes out to his mother, I could not image what she is enduring right now. My question is why is the loser who was taping the fight on his cell phone not charged as well????? I understand that because of the tape the murderers were caught, BUT if he shut off that damn camera and called the police that video never might have been made.. And Derrion could still be here. Quit acting like the hero because you turned the video into the police. YOU MURDERED HIM JUST LIKE THE OTHER BOYS BY STANDING THERE WATCHING IT AS A FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT. YOU ARE GOING TO ROT IN HELL ALONG WITH THOSE MURDERERS, AND I HOPE YOU ARE THROWN IN JAIL AND CHARGED WITH MURDER AS WELL!!!!!

Inspired by Derrion Albert, 2016 Olympics, Chicago, and Chicago native Kanye West. I wanted to share a poster that will help raise awareness of Chicago's relevant issues. The poster can be found http://www.shanetron.com/post/202903391/chicago2016

This is why I believe in unfettered access to abortion. If just one of the four young men who beat Darrion to death had not been born, Darrion might be here. The loss of a future felon might have prevented this horrific tragedy.

Parents like Darrion's mom are clearly swimming upstream alone. My heart breaks for his mother, and the other four mothers have nothing but my disdain and hatred. If they had wanted to do the world a favor they never would have brought four unwanted, utterly useless lives into the world. Nothing these young men do from this day forward will make up for the atrocity they committed. I don't want to stand next to them on a train, cross paths with them in a store, or defile my own being by carrying out a death sentence.

Clearly the four young men involved in this atrocity were not monitored by their parents they way they should have been. I will certainly be giving generously to Planned Parenthood, because there is no reason that unwanted and unloved children should be loosed on society to kill those who would do good.

I would be ashamed before my neighbors if any of my sons ever behaved in such a fashion. It would pain me immeasurably to think that I had brought forth such a loser, and here we have four.

This is why we shouldn't allow democrats to take control of our schools, this needs to stop.

Derrion's community of Roseland has been one of the city's most treacherous areas since the late 1980s, when the economic decline of the area led to urban decay and gang violence. In the mid-1990s, it gained notoriety...

Any expert or IDIOT knows that POVERTY is what breeds violence and crime. I'm neither Democrat or Republican, bot parties have their good points as well as their faults. But I will say that it is the Republican, "I want it all, no matter who it costs" philosophy that drives the type ECONOMIC DECLINE that turned this neighborhood upside down. And its the scared, self-serving conservative philosophy of "NOT IN MY BACKYARD" that keeps it going and TRIES to keep it contained to the less empowered communities. At this point, this young man's death is not a party issue, its a human issue. Its divisiveness that keeps this cycle going. Anyone whose reasoning skills are so lacking that a comment such as yours is the most profound conclusion they can derive, needs to just keep their mouth closed. PLEASE learn from Sara Palin and just shut the f*** up.

you are Right on point. excellent reply to the comment above.

I can agree with shutting up when we have harsh generalizations as above StheFU. I will also agree that it is not a party issue. I'm neither Republican or Democrat and I think it is a morality issue. I will go half way with you on the "poverty breeds violence and crime" claim. While I believe that violence and crime follow poverty and famine, I don't believe it's the cause.

You see, if you're a blood sucking vampire and you get a daily supplement of blood in the mail by your local blood bank, then you're all good and no one really knows you're a vampire... unless of course the mail service lost your package. Well now you're hungry and thirsty for a nice, fresh pint of blood or two, so you start sticking your fangs in your neighbor's necks.

Things like famine, poverty, racism and stuff that stresses people out helps bring out what is already there. We are all evil at the core and it takes these situations to reveal the evil that is already there.
I don't get this from any college class I took. I got this truth from the Bible. No other book or anything will tell you that we are evil and need God's help to change. What brings change is Christianity and I can prove it. It's true relationship with the Living God.

Why isn't this getting more national play? Is it because of Obama and his olympic push for chicago? How can you secure the olympics when you can't secure a 16 year olds walk home from school in broad daylight? Madness. This looks like a scene from Somalia.

One more heartbreaking sad story concerning the cheapness of a young boy's life in the drug and violence plagued inner city. When is Daley going to put his foot down and say enough?

you're right of course, but the buck shouldn't just be on daley. Civil rights and community activists must stand up for this young man and stage some kind of action to let the gang thugs know that their behavior is rejected by the larger world.
12:33 PM on 09/28/2009
Civil rights leaders won't be flying into the scene of this mess because it's a bunch of black kids beating another black kid to death in broad daylight. Of course if it was 24 white kids beating him to death Al and Jesse would be on the first flight in.

Parents (and the Mayor but mainly parents) need to first put their feet down and tell their kids enough is enough. Society has all but killed off religion, society made physical disciplining by parents a bad thing to do, and society told teachers "hands off" a long time ago - so the kids (who test borders essentially from the time they are born) practically raise themselves morally and behavior-wise, and their rules rock. What the heck did society think was going to be the case somewhere down the road? Wake up the parents of today's kids first, please, then talk to the Mayor, pastors, counselors, teachers, the million men in the million man march, our black leaders all of whom seem to be sitting too quietly in the park thinking only God knows about what they could/should be doing. Our guys, our seriously endangered young males, need emergent help before we run out of time (or guys) to work with because of ongoing animalistic, shark-like killing frenzies.

This is all about maintaining control of the drug trade. Too many neighborhoods are under siege. Legalize drugs and eliminate the profit motive. Imprison the goons and thugs. Increase funding for education and job training.

I'm so sick of gang bangers terrorizing neighborhoods. They should be tried under the Dept of Homeland Security as terrorists. Honestly, I am definitely more afraid of getting accidentally shot by a gang memeber than blown up by a foreign terrorist. People are afraid to walk to the store, let their children play outside, go to school and sit anywhere near their front window. That is terrorism! And writerjohnny is right that their parents also need to accept responsiblity for raising such violent kids. I know people who grew up in gang infested neighborhoods but they resisted because that was not the life they wanted. It's a dead end.

DawnK:

You ought to be more afraid of getting accidentally shot by (anyone) than blown up by a (foreign) terrorist--the former is far, far more likely than the latter. And although Roseland is not in the DHS's jurisdiction, I'll support your call to have gangs considered terrorists under two conditions. First, if there are safeguards against the federal government arbitrarily labeling anyone they want terrorists (although the Patriot Act and "enemy combatant" already end-around this condition). And second, if churches that promote violence against clinics and medical personnel who perform abortions are charged as terrorists as well.

Have a great day.

When I was a kid growing up in Beverly on the South side of Chicago I used to take the 111th street bus to Roseland once a month to get my hair cut at the veterans barbershop on Michigan Avenue there because it was cheaper. This is another sad day for Chicago and these kids are criminals and their parents have a large part of the responsibility but let's not forget that growing up with no hope and with gangs as the best alternative is a major factor and we all have a hand in that reality.
