Lucy Vodden Dead: 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' Dies At 46

LONDON — Lucy Vodden, who provided the inspiration for the Beatles' classic song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," has died after a long battle with lupus. She was 46.

Her death was announced Monday by St. Thomas' Hospital in London, where she had been treated for the chronic disease for more than five years, and by her husband, Ross Vodden. Britain's Press Association said she died last Tuesday. Hospital officials said they could not confirm the day of her death.

Vodden's connection to the Beatles dates back to her early days, when she made friends with schoolmate Julian Lennon, John Lennon's son.

Julian Lennon, then 4 years old, came home from school with a drawing one day, showed it to his father, and said it was "Lucy in the sky with diamonds."

At the time, John Lennon was gathering material for his contributions to "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," a landmark album released to worldwide acclaim in 1967.

The elder Lennon seized on the image and developed it into what is widely regarded as a psychedelic masterpiece, replete with haunting images of "newspaper taxis" and a "girl with kaleidoscope eyes."

Rock music critics thought the song's title was a veiled reference to LSD, but John Lennon always claimed the phrase came from his son, not from a desire to spell out the initials LSD in code.

Vodden lost touch with Julian Lennon after he left the school following his parents' divorce, but they were reunited in recent years when Julian Lennon, who lives in France, tried to help her cope with the disease.

He sent her flowers and vouchers for use at a gardening center near her home in Surrey in southeast England, and frequently sent her text messages in an effort to buttress her spirits.

"I wasn't sure at first how to approach her," Julian Lennon told the Associated Press in June. "I wanted at least to get a note to her. Then I heard she had a great love of gardening, and I thought I'd help with something she's passionate about, and I love gardening too. I wanted to do something to put a smile on her face."

In recent months, Vodden was too ill to go out most of the time, except for hospital visits.

She enjoyed her link to the Beatles, but was not particularly fond of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."

"I don't relate to the song, to that type of song," she told the Associated Press in June. "As a teenager, I made the mistake of telling a couple of friends at school that I was the Lucy in the song and they said, 'No, it's not you, my parents said it's about drugs.' And I didn't know what LSD was at the time, so I just kept it quiet, to myself."

Vodden is the latest in a long line of people connected to the Beatles who died at a relatively young age.

The list includes John Lennon, gunned down at age 40, manager Brian Epstein, who died of a drug overdose when he was 32, and original band member Stuart Sutcliffe, who died of a brain hemorrhage at 21.

A spokeswoman for Julian Lennon and his mother, Cynthia Lennon, said they were "shocked and saddened" by Vodden's death.

Angie Davidson, a lupus sufferer who is campaign director of the St. Thomas' Lupus Trust, said Vodden was "a real fighter" who had worked behind the scenes to support efforts to combat the disease.

"It's so sad that she has finally lost the battle she fought so bravely for so long," said Davidson.

Oh sure...and Puff the Magic Dragon was completely innocent too. Can't fool me, you effete nabobs of negativity.

If anyone could debunk what Lennon said of the song, it would have been debunked long ago.

Only those who are ignorant of Lennon's writings, even as a child, would "require" that the song being "psychedelic" as having to do with drugs.

Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" was Lennon's favorite poem as a child; and he early wrote surrealist/absurd stuff: see, as example, his book, "In His Own Write". Or listen to "Yellow Submarine," written before The Beatles did LSD.

Tell the truth: you don't know what you're talking about, but you aren't concerned with that -- becasue you aren't concerned with fact and truth. All you care about is slinging negatives, even though false, in effort to feel some degree of self-esteem.

A lot of the songs the Beatles were recording that year were psychadelic-sounding and I'm sure John thought the drawing (a child with kaleidoscope eyes floating in a starry sky) was VERY "trippy." The fact that Julian's name for the picture spelled out LSD was just a delightful coincidence -- the kind you notice and enjoy when you're high.

I was tripping once with a bunch of friends in a building that was the former Sherwin Hotel in Pittsburgh. We were watching Hitchcock's North By Northwest. There's a scene in the film where the CIA agent details Cary Grant's itinerary to him. One of the places on the list was the Sherwin Hotel in Pittsburgh. Our heads about exploded with happiness -- we were IN the movie!

I join all who are sending condolences to Ms. Vodden's family. You don't have to be a drug-enjoyer to see how she played a part in all of our lives. And blessings on Julian, too -- a man who didn't get what he needed from his father but turned out to be a lovely person after all.

Ya beat me to it, jukes......
Having been virtually abandoned by his father, Julian still turned out to be a good man. Good on ya, Julian, and God Bless you, Lucy....and your family.

Well ... that answers that question.

But a no less important question remains unanswered: What if the Beatles were Irish?

Liverpool is a port city. And it is located driectly across the water between Ireland and England. It was the destination for many Irish leaving Ireland for a better life.

Thank God for you RJPCambridge.

It seems you know more about the music John wrote than John.

God I love it when other people know what's in someone elses brain. "I was an acid song". You meant "I was on acid".

Many condolences to Ms. Vodden's family, and it's a nice story and we have to accept John's version of it, but the song definitely says LSD to me.
Which is cool. I really liked LSD.

One of my favorite songs. I was told when I was in Jr high that the song was about LSD by my civics class teacher who eventually became the attorney general in the State of Me. I guess he was wrong. That was in 1969. He was drafted into the Army and went to Viet Nam before the end of the school year. I guess we needed people to fight in Nam worse than we needed teachers.

Rest In Peace Lucy.

I believe he tried to get a deferment but since his name wasn't Dick Cheney he was turned down. I do know that all of his students did sign a petition to no avail. Probably because we weren't registered to vote at 14 years old.

Lucy was a member of an exclusive club: people who inspired or were subjects of Beatles' songs:

- Julian Lennon ("Hey, Jude")
- Prudence Farrow ("Dear Prudence")
- Peter Fonda ("She said")
- Bill (son of Nancy Cooke de Herrera, both of whom were in Rishikesh) ("Bungalow Bill")
- Maharishi Mahesh Yogi ("Sexy Sadie")

I thought "She Said" was inspired by Mia Farrow's sister while they were in India
11:03 AM on 09/29/2009
That was "Dear Prudence" (Prudence Farrow) "She Said She Said" was inspired by an annoying, poolside afternoon with Peter Fonda while on acid.
08:05 PM on 10/01/2009
Nope. LENNON HIMSELF said that "She Said She Said" was about an acid trip with Peter Fonda. Fonda kept saying, "I know what it's like to be dead."

Lennon liked the line.

Lennon was never all that secretive about much of anything (see the "Two Virgins" album cover). If "Lucy" had been about "LSD" he would have SAID it was.

Head a little different story from John Lennon. He said his son and school friend Lucy where playing in the house. Lucy had these fake little diamond the kids were playing with while running around the house That's was the inspiration.
10:29 PM on 09/28/2009
Nope, it was the picture. When did Lennon tell you different?
08:53 PM on 09/28/2009
Guytar, you can find out about lupus at lupus.org.
But, in a nutshell, in lupus, something goes wrong with your immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs. Normally our immune system produces proteins called antibodies that protect the body from these invaders. Autoimmune means your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body’s healthy tissues and creates autoantibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body.
I hope that this helps you understand this strange and terrible disease.
01:42 PM on 09/29/2009
It is a very sad disease. Flannery O'Connor is probably the most famous sufferer.
02:23 PM on 09/29/2009
I was recently diagnosed with Lupus, and it is a very complex disease-no 2 people are affected the same way. I have issues with joint and bone pain, a clotting disorder-which caused me to suffer a stroke at age 44, frequent kidney infections, breathing difficulties, and a wonderful year-round facial 'sunburn' or butterfly rash-one of the most common issues with people with this disease. Some people can have a 'mild' case, others have it cause much more damage-especially to organs. Mainly, it is a disease of chronic inflammation-everywhere.

That was good of Julian. I think that a lot of people tend to forget that lupus is deadly because our rosy cheeks make us look so healthy, even though we are so ill.
You put up a good fight, Lucy, be at peace.
