"Countdown" Slams Fox News For "Bogus" Claims That Obama Is Indoctrinating Kids (VIDEO)

First Posted: 11/30/09 05:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:10 PM ET

"Countdown," with David Shuster filling in for host Keith Olbermann, slammed Fox News for their "bogus" claims that President Obama is trying to indoctrinate school children. Playing a lengthy clip reel of Fox News hosts spluttering in "phony outrage" about the recently surfaced videos, Shuster takes apart their wild accusations that the Obama administration is essentially trying to brainwash children.

Shuster also shows video of children being led to praise George Bush for his Katrina response, and Eric Burns of the media watchdog group Media Matters joins the show to discuss this latest right wing conspiracy theory.

What would you expect from a news organization where mythomania runs rampant?

It's so funny how the GOP dropped the indoctrination line after the speech - except for Faux who wouldn't know when to let go of the bone.

You know, one of the best way to judge a country, is by its press. Is this the beginning of the end of a successful history? In a democracy (a real one), the press is supposed to give only the facts, and let the people make up their minds about issues. They are like an interface between government, business and the people. FoxNews has the honor of being the first news organization to help the fall of a real democracy. Let us see how it goes. I will check on American a few years from now.

...the founding fathers considered the press to be the fourth branch of government....they've been spinning in their graves for the past 16+ years....i think rachel maddow is the ONLY true practitioner of what journalism is all about....

I'm not sure why, but this subject disgusts me more than all of the other right wing propaganda.

It must be because I don't want my kids lives to be effected in any way by those conservative haters and liars.

How can such innocuous stuff be so obviously twisted, and yet make it on national news. How can even the less intelligent people fall for this? The power of that conservative media is scary bad.

Cluster-fox is my new favorite phrase of the month.

Come on though, what could Fox possibly talk about if they didn't manufacture their hysteria? They only have as many real news reporters as Glenn Beck has sobriety chips...

Why is David Shuster allowed anywhere near a camera or microphone. He is the most unappealing(to say the least) human being on the planet. He whines, he grimaces, he postures. Please, please, remove him from the airwaves!!

And yet, you watch.

Bravo.

Lawrence O'Donnell subbing for Keith was bad enough but I didn't change the channel. As soon as I heard Shuster's voice on Tuesday I found something else to watch. That whiny voice of his is like fingernails on a blackboard to me. Olbermann's overwrought rapid fire delivery sometimes gets on my nerves (what's the rush??) but I didn't realize how much I missed him until he returned last night. It's not just his presence but the content also seems to be better. Makes me wonder if he does a lot of his own writing.

What the hell is wrong with our country? We've become the land of fruits and nuts..... Fox news and its watchers can claim some of the blame. I think we're done - I can't figure out what we're fighting for anymore. The republicans continue to destroy us....

The right is making itself look crazier by the day. Every time Obama sneezes is not a negative story. The kids singing a song is hilarious because they did the same thing for other presidents.

Isn't this old news? Months ago repubs were accusing Obama of indoctrination camps. Countdown, of all shows, is just now getting insensed about this?

I am noticing, finally, that a lot of news shows are starting to ask harder questions and not let so much bull s*it just go on by.

I think this might be due to them finally realizing that a Dem is the President and alot of the public is pis*ed at their lazy as*ed coverage.

I am not saying this is good. it disturbs me to no end. News should be news. Interviewers should ask tough and informed questions of everyone they invite on their shows.

I hate "news" as entertainment.

Actually, Fauz News is incensed about this. Nobody was paying attention until they brought it up again (See John Stewart's response somewhere on this site). What I find really funny are the news stories that show a nearly teary-eyed mother watching her child on Youtube being "indoctrinated", but nary a word from her that someone (even if it was the school) put her child's image out there for the world to see..... without anyone's permission. Will the right go to any length to try and push their message?

Refresh my memory, but wasn't Bush in the process of indoctrinating our nation's children when he was notified of the 9/11 attacks.

As I recall he was sitting in a classroom with grade schoolers, someone whispered in his ear and rather than leave immediately he continued with his "indoctrination."

So if anyone should be criticized it's Bush because rather than deal with the emergency he continued on with his mission, which was to complete his mission with those kids.
08:38 AM on 10/01/2009
Eight months into Obama's term and we're still talking about Bush. Bush reading to school children is not indoctrination. I love you're reasoning though, Obama has school children singing his praises, so you obviously blame Bush.

Just zis guy, you know?
08:58 AM on 10/01/2009
No, I think we blame the children singing Obama's praises on Obama winning the election. Did you watch the video? He's the president, someone kids should look up to. Even Bush had kids singing his praises--and for how he dealt with the aftermath of Katrina! Every president has had songs sung about him. Nobody blames Bush for students singing about Obama, but nobody accused Bush of indoctrinating children when he was in office. Why is singing about him any more indoctrination than having the President actually reading to them?
11:22 AM on 10/01/2009
Really? You don't think you and your rightwing nabobs would be screeching over Obama reading to children? Let alone if he continued for almost another 10 minutes in the event of an attack on our soil? Please. You and FAUX Noise would be all OVER that.
