Colbert Closet

On last night's The Colbert Report, host Stephen Colbert took aim at the way the health care reform bill has been impacted by lobbyists -- which is to say that lobbyists are dominating the decision-making process of legislators, because those legislators want to take their money and get re-elected, circle of life et cetera.

Colbert cited Pat Roberts, who sued for further decision-making delays, saying, "The thing I'm trying to point out, is that we would have at least 72 hours for the people that the providers have hired to keep up with all of the legislation that we pass around here, and the regulations that we pass around here, to say, 'Hey, wait a minute. have you considered this?'" Colbert accurately translated this from the original obfuscation into English: "See, all he wants is some time for health care lobbyists to change the bill."

"Folks," Colbert continues, "There are some things that everybody knows, but nobody says." That is exactly right. Every single person who covers the legislative process knows exactly how and why the sausage gets made in the way it does. Moneyed corporate interests purchase legislation in exchange for getting incumbents re-elected. This is playing out in the arena of health care reform. If you've gotten the funny feeling that Congress is about to pass some weak tea, and that President Barack Obama is about to sign that weak tea, and that everyone will follow that up by celebrating the historical kicking of the can down the road -- you are absolutely right. And the reason this will happen is that the health care industry has paid handsomely for this to happen.

But, as Colbert points out, this is one of those things that nobody talks about because the media would rather tell you what political side is winning and which one is losing because it's way more fun than simply reporting, every day, that the American people are getting jacked. I imagine the fact that the press would actually prefer to facilitate further conversations between politicians and lobbyists at Katherine Weymouth's house, with crudites, further impacts this problem.

Colbert, thankfully, is nothing if not an it-getter: "It's time for lawmakers like Max Baucus to stop hiding their relationships and start printing bumper stickers like these: "Max Baucus: I take more money from the health care lobby than anyone in congress." Funny because it's sad, because it's true. But, shhhhh. Please do not disturb all of the delicate whoring that's going on at the Senate Finance Committee.

One reason that we are a wealthy country is because we charge to the hilt for medical care

someone remind me what the congressmen are paid to do by us.

May be time is ripe for a fresh start. The banks are going wild with the repeat behaviors knowing that they will be bailed out again. Insurance companies, medical insurance companies, weapons contractors, private armies, etc, etc.

Someone tell me this, what will be too much. What will these corrupt companies and politicians do that will make us, the people, take to the streets in rage. When will those who caused this mess be brought to justice.

Banks got massive bailouts and yet they still will not lend. People are getting kicked out og their homes and the homes stay abandoned or junkies move in.

Anyone who thinks that these things are on tv and will not affect them personally, well, sit back and watch the show.

Used to tap the hammer around for fun, now he's hitting it directly on the head. Wham, wham, wham.

Anyone who votes either way on the bills without having read them (or without having staff read & summarize them) is not fit for office.

Another point is the bills are so many pages so WE don't read them. Bills should be kept 150 -300 pages and they should use simple and in plain language. These are the tricks lawyers play to keep layman at bay.

I believe the point about Quiddich matches is that if we can read (or our children can read) a 700-page Harry Potter book, then we sure as heck out to be able to read a slightly-larger bill, especially given its importance.

The problem with the 300-page law is that it leaves too much unsaid, and as a result you spend many years in court interpreting it, possibly in ways not intended by the drafters or the supporters of the bill. Keeping things vague does make it easier to pass, because people are fond of seeing what they want to see and assuming everyone else does, too. But then you argue in court about what people meant, and nobody agrees. Big surprise.

Bottom line: this is complex stuff. There are many parts ot the bills. It takes a long time and many pages to lay everything out. The shorter bills are simpler in concept, but don't enjoy much support, because they cut to the chase and eliminate the private insurance middleman. Single payer is a whole lot easier to explain, so it's shorter. Don't want a long, convoluted bill? Then tell your reps you support single payer. LOL

One thing: If you actually read the bills, they are in huge type with 4" margins .... 24 lines per page MAX. And there's a table of contents at the start of every section. Not to mention the 96point headers every so often.

I ran a couple of pages through a word counter .... a good page is 120 words. These aren't pages like you and I usually count pages.

Every single senator and congressman has a staff. Usually a large staff. They are the people who actually do the work. Their job is to read bills, arrange tours, set up schedules and all the other drudge work that makes Washington function. If a representative's staff can't read then he needs a new staff. Washington is like any other large organization. The president may be at the top but it''s the people in the offices and floors who actually make it happen. If the representative can't read the bill he better have his staff do so and explain it to him. I never knew being lazy was an excuse for delaying things.

It's interesting that comics Colbert and Stewart have taken over the job that the mainstream media has failed miserably to do -- questioning the fundamental behavior of our government.

The private medical industry in America holds two world records:

(1) Only medical industry on earth that has never been regulated by government and never had any oversight to allow corruption to be identified by government.

(2) Only medical industry that has no restrictions on excessive profit. Result being the average cost for most treatments in America are double those of any other nation.

We need help from Olbermann, Maddow, Ed Show, Stewart, Letterman, Colbert to expose blue dog democrats like Baucus, Lincoln, Conrad, Carper, and Nelson. Continue to expose them as prostitutes who are bought and paid for by the insurance companies. Colbert is right and with their help, we can expose these blue dogs and let america know their real reasons for opposing public option. Put pressure on the blue dogs with tv ads and bulletin boards. If president Obama does sign a weak bill then I will be disappointed. That is not what he promised us. I do not want to be forced into a healthcare plan that will not benefit us and then be fined if we cannot afford it. Again, that was not what the president promised us.

We progressives would of course disagree.

Capitalist politicians, most of those in Congress, will never regulate the private medical industry so long as they remain capitalists.

For excessive wealth capitalism has always been, and shall always be, in a state of war with democratic equality. The goal of equality being to destroy excessive wealth.

While it's very tempting to agree with you the Democratic party is different than republicans.
Republicans "march in lockstep". Democrats are allowed to disagree. Republicans have "purity tests", Democrats don't. Republicans take pride in "purges". Democrats don't. While I disagree with the so called "Blue Dogs" they are within the party and they have a right to their positions.
I don't want my party to become another "true believer" kind of party like the republicans have become.

Esp. in light of Colbert's quidditch joke. My girlfriend's 12 year old son read almost all the Harry Potters & aren't they around the same length? Granted, this isn't as entertaining, but still...

exactly!

just silly stuff from the people complaining about bills being 1000 pages long

as if THEY read it, they have a staff that reads them and summarizes it, and tell these people what the bills are about.
