White House Calls Out Fox And Glenn Beck On Olympics

In a new post on the official White House blog, Online Programs Director Jesse Lee calls out Fox News for perpetuating lies about President Obama's push to bring the Olympics to the city of Chicago.

Lee writes that Fox News, and in particular Glenn Beck, continues to ignore the facts "in an attempt to smear the Administration's efforts to win the Olympics for the United States."

The White House blog post continues to delineate what it deems misleading rhetoric on Obama's Olympics efforts. An example:

RHETORIC: BECK SAID VANCOUVER LOST $1 BILLION WHEN IT "HAD THE OLYMPICS." Glenn Beck said, "Vancouver lost, how much was it? they lost a billion dollars when they had the Olympics." [Transcript, Glenn Beck Show, 9/29/09]

REALITY: VANCOUVER'S OLYMPICS WILL NOT TAKE PLACE UNTIL 2010. Vancouver will host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games from February 12 - 28, 2010 and March 12-21, 2010, respectively. [Vancouver2010.com, accessed 9/29/09]

The White House's pointed critique of Fox News and Beck culminates with the statement, "For even more Fox lies, check out the latest "Truth-O-Meter feature from Politifact," linking to a post on the latest ACORN conspiracy.

I am actually originally from that city that allegedly lost a "billion" dollars....... another exaggeration offered by Beck. The city did lose money but it has long since been recovered. The city in question also has universal health care.... no foreclosures, few bankruptcies, jobs, jobs, jobs and a wonderful quality of life.

Glenn Beck did clear up the mistake the next day.

He simply stated the wrong city. The fact is still true that the correct city did lose a billion dollars by hosting the olympics. Notice how the WH didn't address that issue. I forget what city it was, but Beck corrected himself.

Glen Beck actually likes being an American, and actually has read the constitution. Where does the constitution say a President can takeover industries? It's time we were grateful for commentators who are not snobs, who can actually relate to real Americans, and will investigate the thievery going on in Government by both the major parties.

It is those "industries" that are driving the country to the ground and could care less about individuals. The new god is money and profit. Nothing else matters. Unregulated capitalism has gotten us to the brink of disaster...I am all for capitalism... But, who protects the interest of the individuals? I agree with the need for some kind of reform to get out country back but Beck's anticts detract from the message.. we end up looking at the messenger, his fake tears, and loose interest in the message. What a revelation! The media and some talk-show hosts distorting the truth, obfuscating facts, spewing false sound-bites is a surprise? It's been going on for years, and most prominently since the "W" Bush whitehouse began using the media to propagandize their "talking points."

The NY Times suppressed their story about the illegal-warrantless wiretapping program for a full year at the request of the administration. Several once credible newspapers pulled stories of corrupt no-bid contractors harming and hampering our military (cost over-runs, lack of sufficient potable water, soldiers being electrocuted in KBR-built barracks, body armor being held in warehouses although contractors were paid to ship them to Iraq, etc.). One by one, the stories appeared, then disappeared the next day, so no follow-up, investigations, or fact-based evidence sought by the "journalists" who deferred to their corporate owners, and worried more about their stock-options than their craft, professional ethics, and the truth.

Sadly, Fox, Beck, Dobbs, Limbaugh are not the only ones who purposely distort, cynically calculate strategy to suit their political objectives, agendas, and serve corporate masters. The MSM is equally culpable.

Did you ever notice that you NEVER, EVER see Beck, Rush-bo, Hannity, Wiener Savage, and many others out in public - away from their "brain support" systems? You know "brain support" the people behind the scenes that keep the teleprompter moving and instantly look up stuff on-line so these chow da heds can look smart.

I have seen Rachel Maddow on MTP. I have seen K Olbermann on other shows, you see Stephanie Miller and Ed Schulz pop up here and there. Chris Wallace too. All of these folks can "hold their own" away from their studio shows but the rite-eeze are afraid to go out on their own.
This would be the ultimate test to prove if they are legit of not: Go on MTP, Beck and have an open discussion without your brain trust. I'd pay a huge pile of dough to watch any of them go up against their peers without their “behind the scenes brains”.
