What's Your Reaction?

Your interwebs are blowing up today at a YouTube clip that documents a Glenn Beck photo shoot, where the Fox News host has a substance, presumably Vicks VapoRub, applied to his face so that he can manufacture some tears for the photographer.

Depending on your point of view, this is either the object demonstration of a time-tested photographer's trick, or the SMOKING GUN THAT WILL BRING DOWN GLENN BECK'S EMPIRE OF FAKE TEARS! As you might surmise, I am opting to err on the side of calmness and serenity, because Gawker posted this video about two weeks ago, and the Republic survived.

WATCH:

Nevertheless, here's a point well worth underscoring again: let's note that the photographer you see in the video is the controversial Jill Greenberg, who got in trouble after she shot John McCain for The Atlantic, after which she talked a lot of smack about purposely making McCain look bad and posting Photoshopped versions of those images on her personal website, which further lampooned the senator. Beck said this, of Greenberg, way back when:

The Atlantic is sending a letter of apology to McCain. They will not be paying [Greenberg], and they're considering a lawsuit. Good, they should. Greenberg said that, since some of her artwork was anti-Bush, quote, "Maybe it was somewhat irresponsible for them to hire me." Wait a minute. Let me see if I have this right. She does a horrible job and then she blames her employer? That's right, I forgot. She's a liberal.

By the way, this isn't the first time this photographer has been in the middle of controversy. In 2004, to describe her political helplessness, she took a series of supposedly artsy photos of toddlers crying. How did she get this shot? Well, she gave the kids candy, and then she snatched it away from them. They'd cry uncontrollably, and she'd just click away. Isn't it just fantastic art? Nothing more beautiful than a child being terrorized.

You'd have thought that the candy-snatch technique would have been sufficient to bring tears to Beck's eyes as well.

We are light years away from the days of Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite.

Isn`t Hp doing what libs accuse fox of doing? Between this non story and the so called battle between beck and hannity . It seems to me that HP is fabricating stories for viewers. Jason ,do you and hp have a little crush on beck,? Are there not any stories about liberals to print?

What is fabricated from a videotape. Draw whatever conclusion you want, but here is actual information for you to take in. That seems like legitimate journalism, which is far from what you get from Fox, which starts with bogus claims and allows no one to refute them.

Who would have thought that people like Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, Drudge, would someday be spearheading protests for the Bill Yon Errors, promoting the disruption of town meetings and tea party charades, dreaming up red herrings, distractions and strawmen obfuscations. It is interesting that the Bill Yon Errors are copying the tactics of the hippies in the 60's and 70's, only with their own media networks to spin their messages instead of having to rely on an unsympathetic press. If you have the money, you can buy protesters, buy media, run ads on hundreds of channels, spreading rumors and propaganda, lobby congress, which includes entertaining and buying congress people off and what is all of this for. It is to make sure that the Bill Yon Errors remain Bill Yon Errors, no matter that it is a disaster for Americans as a whole. We need to come to realize that the ambitions of the Bill Yon Errors and their servants present a danger to everyone else. No amount of cuteness, drama and outrage falsely portrayed by the paid off media who serve the Bill Yon Errors can change that.

First off, that's not Vicks. Vicks is made with a petrolleum jelly base, which would've messed up Becks make-up. It's probably just menthol-laced cream.
Second, it's a photoshoot and Beck's tears were obviously the subject of the shoot. His crying is at the center of his 'act''s fame. A photoshoot is, by definition, staged. What's so surprising that the photographer is aiding Beck in keeping the tears flowing and triggering eye redness over an extended period to ensure she has as many shoots from which to choose the best from?
Those making a functional leap to Beck actually using this technique during his live show have obviously never applied menthol to skin close to the eyes. This would be a really BAD idea during a live show.

Do you think Walter Cronkite had to rehearse this kind of nonsense? Katie Couric? Dan Rather? Bryan Williams? Tom Brokaw? Get it? This is not a legitimate kind of thing to rehearse. It means he was planning on using these false tears as a part of his act. Read above to understand the reason for Beck being on the air.

Exactly, dominicus. I don't even like Beck and don't watch him, but it's pretty obvious this is just staging for the photographer and in no logical way can one make the leap that if he does it here, he also does it on his show.

Since you haven't watched his show, you apparently don't know that he does do this on his show and this was a rehearsal for his crocodile tears act. Absolutely.

There is actually no logical way one CANNOT make the leap that if he does it in a photo shoot, he would be likely to do it on his show. If he does it in front of a video camera, there is no logical reason to believe that he would NOT do it in front of a TV camera.

Of course, your sentence construction implied that it would be illogical to think that he MUST do it on his show. That WOULD be illogical, of course; just as it would be illogical to assume that if he were photographed spewing bile, he MUST then do it on his show...even though, in the real world, he does so every day.

Don't people of his faith (The Church of Jesus Christ, I Can't Believe This Passes For Christianity) eschew caffene, alcohol etc? How is abusing Vic's Vaporub any different? Does this mean he doesn't get his own personal planet and harem in the afterlife? For shame.

All religions require that one must learn to accept a vast pool of highly illogical, irrational and extremely implausible premises. Once you can accept such utter nonsense as valid 'reality', you cannot fail to comprehend that anything which comes out of your mouth COULD be perceived by others as truthful...in fact, it could be perceived as 'GOD'S truth'.

Therefore - and this is the great joke of all religion - if YOU could accept such thorough nonsense as plausible truth, there will always be at least SOME people who will believe whatever YOU tell them, even if it makes no sense whatsoever. Religion becomes then, for most people, its own incentive to lie with abandon whenever it might be to your advantage to do so. Now, most religions have a problem with lies which aren't officially sanctioned by the specific religion in question, but that doesn't typically have any effect on religious adherents because the subconscious effect of the religious training nearly always takes precedence.

Only people with a strong grounding in ethics - devoid of the religious infection - are likely to be reliably truthful. Clearly, Beck has no such ethical background.

What sickens me about this Beck fellow is that there are so many Americans who have cried for sons and daughters who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, lost their jobs, illness strikes and no insurance, so when Beck has to use Vicks to bring on tears he should be reminded that a large block of Americans do not need Vicks to bring tears !!!!

I recently attended Anti-Beck protest when the idiotic Mayor of Mount Vernon gave Glenn Beck the Keys to the City. I was shocked by the number of Pro-Beck supporters spewing hate who really believe in Beck’s over the top conspiracy theories! I decided to research his appeal and was taken back when I came across a Mormon web site. They can’t even stand him and the former Mormon Professor & FBI far right extreme conservative, Cleon Skousen (who never joined the John Birch Society but supported their views).

Beck promoted Skousen’s book titled, "The 5,000 Year Leap"! Basically, Beck has become a cult leader and all the people who support him are extreme far right Mormon zombies! The good news, we all know what happens to Cult Leaders.

Did he say his eyes were becoming use to the Vick's Vapor Rub? I don't know why this is a surprise. No grown man can manufacture as many tears as Mr. Beck.

No, his eyes were getting used to the "sting" that the ointment was giving off (this makes his eyes water). This is no indication that his eyes were used to this type of treatment through repeated use of it over an extended time.

Sheesh, people, use some common sense. Hat Beck all you want, but use common sense.
