CHICAGO — (AP) So much for Da Games.

Chicago residents felt blindsided Friday as the International Olympic Committee quickly eliminated their hometown from the race to host the 2016 Summer Games. Stunned disbelief stretched from the South Side to Wrigleyville as the Second City learned it wasn't even second fiddle, but fourth out of the four finalists.

Nobody saw this coming.

"I was shocked. I was disappointed. I couldn't believe it," said Mayor Richard M. Daley, who didn't even have time to get to the voting ceremony in Copenhagen before the IOC bounced Chicago en route to picking Rio de Janeiro.

The 67-year-old mayor who spent three years touting the games as a boon for Chicago -- many said landing the games would secure his legacy -- said another bid was unlikely.

"At this time it is (unlikely)," Daley said. "If it's in our hemisphere it has to move somewhere else."

Daley had said the Olympics would lead to new construction and jobs, while drawing in federal money to help fix a mass transit system in need of an estimated $10 billion overhaul.

"I was hoping this would pick up Chicago's economy, and now I feel pushed even farther from finding a job," said Vince Monaco, an unemployed 35-year-old in the city. "Since we went out in the first round, I think someone in the IOC has a chip on their shoulder against the U.S."

Thousands of people stood in bewilderment in downtown Chicago after watching the IOC vote on huge television screens set up in Daley Plaza, named for the mayor's father. The choice of Chicago as the host city seemed so likely to many still basking in the glow of hometown Sen. Barack Obama's election as president a year ago.

There was an audible gasp as IOC President Jacques Rogge announced: "The city of Chicago, having obtained the least number of votes, will not participate in the next round."

Katie Suitor, a 28-year-old social worker, had already signed up to be an Olympics volunteer.

"I was looking forward to having the world come and see just how great Chicago is," she said.

The Chicago bid had plenty of homegrown firepower, from Oprah Winfrey to the first lady, South Side native Michelle Obama, both of whom spent two days in Copenhagen charming and chatting up members of the IOC. President Obama joined them Friday and the first couple were part of Chicago's presentation to the IOC, though Air Force One left for the U.S. before the voting began.

Randy Wood, 49, of San Diego said the IOC clearly wasn't swayed by Obama's influence and the early elimination reflects poorly on the president.

"Maybe his clout stopped at the Pacific and the Atlantic," Wood said at the Chicago rally.

With Chicago well-known for public corruption and problems with public services, opponents had serious concerns about Olympics-sized hassles and bills, despite assurances by Daley and bid organizers that taxpayers wouldn't owe a dime.

Perhaps not surprisingly in a city where a billy goat curse gets some of the blame for the Cubs' failure to win a World Series since 1908, the IOC decision quickly triggered various theories as to why Chicago lost.

"Maybe it's possible we overwhelmed them with all our celebrity power," offered Jennifer Bruch, a 33-year-old Chicagoan.

Others, though, said they were just sad that the world would not have a chance to see that Chicago is a modern, vibrant city and not a gritty industrial center with belching smokestacks and Al Capone-like wiseguys calling all the shots.

"They're missing history, they're missing culture, they're missing a beautiful lakefront, said Georgia Evans, a 60-year-old patients' advocate. "It's a wonderful place."

The fact that half of the city of Chicago was against the 2016 Olympics should have been an indicator that they might not get the Olympic bid.

After all, if they couldn't convince the city of Chicago that this was good for the city, how on earth were they going to convince the IOC?

Chicago counted her chickens a little too soon. Big deal. They will get over it, and so should everybody else. Not every city can win every time.

Real reason for Olympic Loss: Racism of IOC

The Obama Justice Department should file a request that the United Nations open a Hate Crime inquiry against the International Olympic Committee.

Michelle is fuming because she couldn't look her best after the trans-Atlantic flight on the tiny Air Force Two. It doesn’t have the creature comforts of Barack’s 747.

The Justice Department should also bring charges against the City of Copenhagen. After all if Obama didn’t have to present in a Scandinavian country, filled with people who look like Karl Rove they would have had a better chance.

Also, Brazil did not end slavery until 1888. For Rio to win the bid is outrageous. All oil exploration deals with Petrobras will be cancelled and the US should boycott the games.

Racism is everywhere.

Wow! From that opening paragraph you'd think that all of Chicago mourned Obama's failure. Funny, but I'd swear that picture of the "crowds jam-packing the square" looks like only a couple hunderd people to me. I wouldn't even call that a thousand. I guess I'm not surprised that we lost the Olympic bid. After all, Obama just got back from his European America-bashing tour. Why would anyone want to come to this country that's lost it's freedom and democracy, and is a cesspool of crime and corruption?(according to Obama)

First of all, I think their speeches sucked. Second, the I, me & my have got to go. Third, sitting on her dad's lap in her 20's is creepy. Fourth, Oslama says his home town is Chicago, so far I heard he is from Hawaii, Africa & chicago which is it for sure???? I am glad that the IOC saw through their arrogance & gave it to a country that isn't swimming in debt like Oslama has us. Just because he shows up, he thinks he is still playing the Chicago thuggery game. Oh well, now at least his crony Valerie Jerrett won't be getting tax dollars to pay for her slums to be torn down!!! Way to go Rio. Patriotism for a man that is doing everything in his power to destroy the nation we love!!! I don't think so. If Bush would of went over there, would your sentiments still be the same about not the man but the country, I highly doubt it>> Hippocrit!!!

WTF? His heritage is half-African, but he grew up in Hawaii, Indonesia, and Kansas. He went to school in California, Massachusetts, and some other state I can't remember. Most of his adult life has been in Chiago. Is it that hard to grasp the concept that you can have more than one hometown? If asked where he was from, my dad could righfully answer New York (where he lived until 18) or Indiana (where he's lived most of the time since then.) I'd like to ask just HOW we got into so much debt... GEE... think it could have ANYTHING to do with two wars Bush started? Ever look at how much the debt increased under the "fiscally responsible" GOP (not just Bush, but even... Reagan)? Probably not, b/c only those tax-and-spend Democrats could ever contribute to the national debt (sarcasm.)

But why I'm even trying to have a rational discussion with someone who calls the president "Oslama" is beyond me. BTW, I heard tin foil is on sale. It's in the racism and Islamophobia aisle, just next to the birther discount bin.

Win or lose, I think that it is great that the Obamas made a bid for their hometown. We all know that had the President and First Lady sat back and had no involvement in the process, the Republicans would have criticized them for that. They simply can't win with the Republican critics. That is the nature of things in this country. I think it is disgusting that some Americans would cheer for a loss because they don't like or agree with the person who was elected ( by a large majority) president.

Personally, I am sick of it all. From the media personalities who spin and lie to fit the mind set of their audiences to the politicians who will say and do anything to make the news cycle for the day. In the meantime, who is benefitting from all of this discord. Is this huge divide which seems to be getting wider and wider with every act of incivility helping America and its future? I think not and maybe this rejection of the Chicago bid is just one example. Maybe the rejection is more about ordinary Americans than it is about the Obamas. I don't have the answer. My gut just tells me that we Americans are hurting ourselves by the behavior of the weak minded ready to be led by the ignorant.

Thank you Mr. President for trying to bring the Olympics to our great country. You took the time from your family and all the problems you are trying to solve for this country to give it a try.
I personally do not think the U.S. was even being seriously considered at all. It is about time that South America has a chance.
We certainly could use the money and jobs, but also cannot afford to spend the money right now.
I do think it is sad that some out there would cheer because all they want to do is make Obama look like he has failed at something...

After what America has represented for the last 8 years, is anyone seriously surprised that the world community would frown upon the idea of rewarding us? Really?

I'm not "shocked" they voted us out in the first round. We deserve it!

I would agree - it is going to take many, many years to regain the respect of the world after the 8 Cheney years - but I don't think it was a slap in the face. Rio is a lot more fun than Chicago. And it's not Americans turn again, quite yet.

We were the favorite? No, we were arrogant to think it was a given that we were the favorite. American arrogance is getting old.

So which is it? The rest of the world loves Obama and that's a sign of weakness and unAmericanism, or the rest of the world loves America except when Obama shows up and that's a sign of how terrible he is? You can't have it both ways.
