Stephanie Birkitt: Letterman's Former Lover, Assistant (PHOTOS, VIDEO, INFO)

Stephanie Birkitt has been identified as a former lover and one of the women involved in the David Letterman extortion plot. A source tells People there is another former staffer who was a lover as well.

Birkitt, Letterman's former assistant who has made several appearances on the "Late Show," lived with alleged blackmailer Robert "Joe" Halderman, who allegedly "was in possession of Birkitt's diary, correspondence and photos -- which he says incriminated Letterman," according to TMZ.

Sources tell TMZ that Letterman and Birkitt had a sexual relationship that ended before 2003, when his son Harry was born.

Sources tell RadarOnline.com that "Birkitt and Letterman slept together for a period of time before he married his girlfriend Regina had their son Harry" and that Birkitt is reportedly "mortified Halderman is using her fling with Letterman to blackmail her boss."

So who is Stephanie Birkitt?

Birkitt is a 1997 graduate of Wake Forest University who interned in the writers' department at the "Late Show" in spring 1996. After a stint at "48 Hours" -- incidentally, where Halderman worked as a producer -- Birkitt moved back to the "Late Show."

After a job as producer, Birkitt applied to be Letterman's assistant.

"I heard there was a job in Dave's office opening up and I applied, because I didn't think I was much of a news hound, as it was a little too serious for my personality," she told the New Hampshire Union Leader in 2004.

In a 2002 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Birkitt called Letterman "the best boss I've ever had."

She expanded on that claim in a 2003 interview with her alma mater, telling a Wake Forest publication:

Aside from being incredibly funny and personable he is generous, kind, and is great fun to play catch with. I really couldn't ask for a more fun work environment. Dave is truly the greatest boss I could ever have.

Birkitt would often appear on the "Late Show" — sometimes as a character, "Vicki." She became well-known for her reports from the Winter Olympics in 2002 and 2006 and her "Jaywalking"-style polls of people on Manhattan's streets. She also interviewed "Survivor" castoffs and appeared in the "CBS Mailbag" segment of the show.

A then-Access Hollywood producer saw Birkett and Letterman together at the Emmys years ago, being normal.

This is way too much curiosity by the general public. This is not High School folks. It is people who made decisions, that are not our perogative to judge. It is something that needs to be hashed out by the people involved. The media will drum beat this to death and the simple fact is that is is really no one's business but the people who are involved. Enough already, let the thing play its self out and find something better to obsess over.

Personally­, I don't have a problem with it. He wasn't married, they were both consenting adults and they obviously were having fun. If he was harassing her, I'm sure she would have come out and said something about it by now. It sounds like Halderman was jealous when he found her diary and decided to make a profit off of it. Until Halderman tried to bribe Letterman, it would have been no one else's business. Letterman is going to have the last laugh now though - his shows ratings are up 38% - you can't buy this type of advertisin­g!

i remember stephanie, thought she was real cute and noticed the relationsh­ip change between her and dave. i knew something was goin on between them. she was getn more feisty with him towards end of her stint doin bits on show too. they were acting like a married couple with some of their banter.

Ok I don't get the "story" here...why are we snooping around trying to "figure" out who she is. I like that Dave came out and said hey I did it...ok and next! And he is a TALK SHOW host not a polititici­an or a "role model"...t­his didn't change my opinion of him in any way.

I always joked about who was this 'not funny girl' on Letterman.

Kind of figured out she was a 'special' friend long ago, why else would she be on the air? I used to call her "Dave's girlfriend­". Anyway, she looks old enough to make up her own mind about her actions. Hope the judge feels the same way!

We can probably expect a great monologue from Craig Ferguson about this, there's one positive.

What judge are you talking about? "Hope the judge feels the same way"? It doesn't appear, from what she says, that she was being harassed or intimidate­d in any way, shape or form. The judge in this case is only for the blackmaile­r on the issue of extortion. No one has filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Letterman that I'm aware of.
