Todd Palmer and Rob Pringle: Where Animals Don't Run Away
A visit to the Galapagos is something of a pilgrimage for biologists; relative to their tiny area, these islands have contributed a disproportionate amount to our understanding of life on this planet.
Brenda Scott Royce: Zoo Is Not a Dirty Word
A small, vocal group of animal activists in Los Angeles is mounting a campaign to halt construction on the new elephant exhibit at the Los Angeles Zoo, and to send its Asian bull elephant to a sanctuary.

Picture this: Twelve women from New York, Aspen and Palm Beach sleeping "under canvas" on the Serengeti, sharing two vehicles, one Ranger and roughly 30 meals...There were no Bergdorf Blondes on this trip. More like Tanzanian Trekkers.

Sure, there are those who go nuts over penguins (I do, too), and over little bulldogs and parakeets and ladybugs...but fur me, bud...'taint nothin' lahk a lil' HIPPO! LOVE 'em!
Boy...these lovely creatures scare you? Hey, just look in a mirror...
Unless there was some ancient alien breeding facility in West Africa, they became what they are naturally. I seem to recall hearing that hippos and pigs descended from a common small, ancestor not that much unlike contemporary pigs, so the size of the common hippo would actually be more of an evolutionary leap than the size of these little critters. Whatever the case, I find the pygmy hippos much more pleasant than the full-sized models. If you've ever been downwind of a hippo habitat in a zoo, I think you would agree.
Language debate: Official languages of Nigeria according to Wikipedia: English, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba
I am left to assume the name comes from one of the latter three.
Otherwise...HOW CUTE!!! Though if there were enough of them someone might try to make this the next Vietnamese Pot Belly Pig craze.
I logged in just to comment on that - so thank you for beating me to the punch! There's no such language as 'Nigerian' HuffPost! We expect better from you!
Well, we'll all be careful of this tiny little dangerous hippo!
Although, they're little, did you check out the size of the mouth and the teeth on the adult pygmy; I don't know if I would trust it.
Very cute but certainly not as cute as the one-pound deer Rupert
