An insane stage wardrobe can transform a talented performer into a cultural icon. Who would the Material Girl or Ziggy Stardust be without their costumes? But sometimes sartorial creativity works in the other direction, making the whole performance look like a big, loopy mess. Which of these bold statements are great ones?

I don't get why a burlesque performer like Von Teese is in this mix.

I like Bowie's music, but his outfits make me cringe. He's so ridiculous.

I just saw Joan Osborne last night. Alls she wore was this red dress. &
It's like: These folks are makin' millions and she's gotta go to colleges and schlep her own records?
Well, she's probably havin' more fun than the rst of them.

out of that group Bowie was the wildest - especially for the 1970's.

Too bad you didn't throw Sun Ra in there. His "Space is the Place" themes had all sorts of wild overtones. His band the Arkestra could really blow the doors off.

Come on ladies....we must ALL admit it....if we had a body like Dita's...we'd put it out there just like she does. In fact, we'd probably NEVER wear any clothes.

You know you would !!

Dita Von Teese is a stripper (oops... I mean "burlesque performer!"), so the craziness and scantiness of her costumes is kind of a given, isn't it?

And seriously, THAT'S the craziest Prince costume they could come up with? Hasn't HP ever heard of Google images?

My vote goes to Gene Simmons. I was never a fan of Kiss' music, but their costumes (expecially Gene's) were downright nutty.

I'm going to have to find out who Lady Gaga is....

I have to give it to Dita Von Tease...She had the best costume by far and the body to pull it off. If I had that body I'd never wear clothes either!

Remember that Bowie was wearing that way back in 1972. He was way ahead of his time.

Out of this bunch, I think Prince wins for sheer style, and Lady GaGa wins for sheer WTF!?!

Bowie was the cutting edge - truly a master of the daring and new back in the day when the record company execs were more interested in safe, tired, pothead conformity. A while back I came across a video clip of David Bowie singing "I Got You Babe" with Marianne Faithful on BBC's "Top of the Pops". He was wearing what looked like a pair of butterfly wings covered in black feathers as a breastplate with his signature spikey hair the brightest shade of red ever - it more than made up for Marianne's gravely, off-key droning. Madonna gets props for her choices, but she was riding the crest of the golden age of music videos, when every performer was expected to push the envelope - she simply had the smarts push it in the direction that got the biggest response from the masses. Lady GaGa seized the mantle at the VMA's, but Bowie was, is and always will be the first and the best in my book.
