Egypt: Fake Hymen Kit May Be Banned

Egypt

CAIRO — Conservative Egyptian lawmakers have called for a ban on imports of a Chinese-made kit meant to help women fake their virginity and one scholar has even called for the "exile" of anyone who imports or uses it.

The Artificial Virginity Hymen kit, distributed by the Chinese company Gigimo, costs about $30. It is intended to help newly married women fool their husbands into believing they are virgins – culturally important in a conservative Middle East where sex before marriage is considered by many to be illicit. The product leaks a blood-like substance when inserted and broken.

Gigimo advertises shipping to every Arab country. But the company did not answer e-mails and phone calls seeking comment on whether it had orders from Egypt or other parts of the Middle East.

The fracas started when a reporter from Radio Netherlands broadcast an Arabic translation of the Chinese advertisement of the product. That set off fears of conservative parliament members that Egyptian women might start ordering the kits.

Sheik Sayed Askar, a member of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood who is on the parliamentary committee on religious affairs, said the kit will make it easier for Egyptian women to give in to temptation. He demanded the government take responsibility for fighting the product to uphold Egyptian and Arab values.

"It will be a mark of shame on the ruling party if it allowed this product to enter the market," he said in a notice posted on the Brotherhood's parliament Web site on Sept. 15.

The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest political opposition group, holds 88 of Egypt's 454 parliament seats.

Prominent Egyptian religious scholar Abdel Moati Bayoumi said anyone who imports the artificial hymen should be punished.

"This product encourages illicit sexual relations. Islamic culture forbids these relations except within the confines of marriage," Bayoumi said. "I think this should absolutely not be allowed to be exported because it brings more harm than benefits. Whoever does it (imports it) should be punished."

In a country and a region where pre-marital sex is so taboo it can even lead to a woman's murder, the debate over the virginity-faking kit has revived Egypt's constant struggle to reconcile modern mores with more traditional beliefs – namely, that a woman is not a virgin unless she bleeds after the first time.

"Bleeding is not the only signal that yes, she's a virgin," said Heba Kotb, an observant Muslim woman who hosts a sex talk show on TV in which she fields calls from all over the Middle East.

Kotb noted that a medical procedure that reattaches a broken hymen by stitching is illegal in Egypt and can cost hundreds of dollars – prohibitively expensive for the poor. But many women still secretly seek it out in fear of punishment for pre-marital sex.

Such punishment could include slayings at the hands of relatives, a practice more commonly referred to as honor killings and common in the more conservative tribal areas of the Middle East.

The product is also causing a buzz on Egyptian blogs and news sites.

"If this thing enters Egypt, the country is going to go to waste. God protect us," commented a reader on the Web site of Egyptian newspaper Al-Youm Al-Sabie.

Marwa Rakha, an author and blogger who writes about dating issues, sees the product as a tool of empowerment for women in a macho Arab culture that restricts women's sexual urges but turns a blind eye to men galavanting.

"It sticks it in the face of every male hypocrite," she said.

After reading the article and comments i got my fill of rightous indignation, racism and bigotry. When i first saw the article my reaction was negative just like everyone else. After about 10 minutes on the internet i found that most of the allegations are not true.
What i did notice, is a problem with western coverage of the news . Wether it's finding the craziest guy to interview as if he is a normal person off the Arab street or creating outlandish stories like the one above. I am sure that cultural differences are to blame, along with some Arab cultural taboos, some of which i disagree with.
What i do find is that many people who read these things swallow them as facts without ever checking or ever once picking up an English translation of the Koran. Then the closeted bigots start spitting venom and making righteous generalizations about Arabs and Muslims. Having lived in Egypt for 10 years i have never seen my friends parents or my friends and family disrespect or hit a woman in my hole life (the first time i saw a woman being hit was outside of a bar in Florida). When we hear of an Honor killing we are as disgusted and surprised as anyone because they are not common. Following western news sources you would think that those things are more common than cars, which they are not. There are uneducated and crazy people everywhere including in the middle-east.

Sharia law degrades women into 2nd class status. There is more that is hidden when a woman has to wear a veil in public; sexual aggression, sexual repression, sexual exploitation, economic exploitation and enforced infantalization of grown women.
*sexual aggression - women who don't follow the norm are subject to rape (for not wearing habibs or going out in public without a male chaperon), are subject to acid attacks for not complying with male demands
*sexual repression - can not date or flirt, are subject to arranged marriages, are subject to "honor" killings from male relatives for flaunting any aspect of sharia law that brings dishonor on the family name
*sexual exploitation - sharia law allows prepubescent girls to be married off to older men, allows up to 4 wives (for men only)
*economic exploitation - women are under men for economic support or relegated to traditional women-only duties and can not be major source of support (only the elite's daughters are exempt).
*infantalization - discourages girls from getting an education or learning a productive trade, that leaves women without the means to improve or support themselves in a modern world (only the elite's daughters are exempt).

Label me ethnocentric or culturally insensitive if you will, but I am really fed up with stories about how some men from this region of the world treat women. From female circumcision and honor killing to this debacle of intact hymen I have reached my breaking point. Anyone who participates in such crass and pathological behavior has, by nature of their actions, proven themselves to be less than human and therefore should be treated as a lesser animal. I am sick and tired of being told that it is a different culture which I must respect. By this rationale would I then have to respect a culture that condoned paedophilia, murder and cannibalism? Regardless of skin color or creed, people who engage in these horrific practices should be exterminated the same as a rabid wolf.

Apparently you can't say that word on Huffington Post, so let's just say it rhymes with "shmlitoris". But honestly, you can't compare murder and genital mutilation with anything that goes on in this country. And as far as American culture goes, it wouldn't break my heart if that went the way of the dodo as well.

I think that If I had a daughter in a country with such customs, I would purchase such a kit and have it ready to give to her on her wedding night, virgin or not. The penalty for not bleeding on one's wedding night is too horrible to bear thinking about, and most people in modern cultures know that one can break her hymen without intercourse. What other choice would one have, other than to keep one's daughter from doing anything (horseback riding, bicycling, etc.) that might prematurely rupture this fragile membrane? I do not recall any blood when I lost my virginity; then again, I rode horses and did gymnastics and used tampons and all of that stuff. Luckily, I didn't grow up in a country where there were honor killings -- I thought that one person's comment was extremely good, in that the commenter wondered why a woman's honor was believed to reside in her vagina; my only response to that one is that it seems that many men think their penises have a life of their own, and the people who believe this about women's anatomy are projecting their own obsessions ;-)

Marwa Rakha, You said exactely what I wanted to say. Double-faced, ignorant, and macho males(not just in Egypt or the Middle East) feel free to engage in all kinds of sex and as much as they want before marriage where they demand the woman to be a virgin! Hell with them all. p.s. Is there a test for male virginity? Let's have it,.

These islamic cultures are so backwards and oppressed, I swear the men who make the rules must have the smallest penises in the world. Otherwise why would their promise of paradise be sexual for if you blow yourself up? If the conservative christian nutjobs in the US ever got savvy enough to team up with the islamists, we'd have a huge problem on our hands. It's crucial that we defend our culture and way of life against any influences from these moonbats.

This is about love people; it is not about the flesh.

The tradition in the middle east and many places in the world is that you want a person who is not and has never been in love with anyone else at the time of marriage.

The belief is that a woman who has fallen IN love with someone else before marriage never really falls OUT of love.

The belief is that loving someone without having slept with them is okay because it's not consummated therefore no strong emotional ties

Insecurity? What's secure about a man or woman who has slept with a dozen people before marrying you carrying a small piece of each of them with him or her?

If this were about love, then why are non-virgin brides being murdered in 'honor killings' and why the double-standard regarding men? This has nothing to do with love, but rather ( extremely ) reactionary values.

BAH! I don't believe that for a second. It is about control. Otherwise, they would hold themselves to the same high standards. i fail to understand why, to some men, our hymens, and other bits of our reproductive systems are more important than our minds. What a bunch of babies!
