What's Your Reaction?

Conservative columnist George Will has taken much heat for his columns doubting the existence of global warming, and the latest to join the pile on is Keith Olbermann. The MSNBC host took to his show Countdown to name him one of the "Worst Persons in the World" for "writing his seventh climate change-denying column of the year."

Rush Limbaugh and Congressman Paul Broun (R-Ga.) also made the list.

how come keith doesnt attack credible scientists with opposing views? maybe its because his FAUX cornell education precudes any understanding of geologic time!!! the AMO [look it up brainiacs!!], the PO [dittos!!], the long-term [in geologic time] statistical association of tremps vs. CO2 values, dendrochonology data..

i could go on--but ive previously posted links to a number of PEER-REVIEWED [that means papers reviewed by other scientists and coinsidered worthy o fpublication in a scientdfi journal--NOT the NYTIMES--or USA2DAY--REAL SCIENCE JOURNALS!!!] scientific studies [from SEVERAL DIFFERENT disciplines] that counter the idea that anthropogenic activities are DRIVING "climate change". If man is driving climate change, how do you explain the explorations of the Vikings during a period of global warming? What about the little ice age in the early 1800s?

How about JAMES HANSEN contributing to the modelling studies that posited a new "ice age" in the mid-late 70s? How about the 30 year PDO & AMO cycles?

our climate is never in stasis--it is ALWAYS changing!! Do you wish to assign an "optimum" clkimate based upon what we currentkly expoeriuence?? Or..would you care to let nature take its course and then we can experience NATURAL climate cycles? We love NATURAL foods--why not NATURAL climate cyclesa??

If someone has misplaced global warming, NOAA has found it....

Global Highlights – Summer

The June-August worldwide ocean surface temperature was also the warmest on record at 62.5 degrees F, 1.04 degrees F above the 20th century average of 61.5 degrees F.

The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for the June-August season was 61.2 degrees F, which is the third warmest on record and 1.06 degrees F above the 20th century average of 60.1 degrees F.

Global Highlights – August

The worldwide ocean surface temperature of 62.4 degrees F was the warmest on record for any August, and 1.03 degrees F above the 20th century average of 61.4 degrees F.

Separately, the global land surface temperature of 58.2 degrees F was 1.33 degrees F above the 20th century average of 56.9 degrees F, and ranked as the fourth warmest August on record.

Large portions of the world’s land mass observed warmer-than-average temperatures in August.

The Southern Hemisphere average temperatures for land and ocean surface combined were the warmest on record for August.

According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), Arctic sea ice covered an average of 2.42 million square miles during August. This is 18.4 percent below the 1979-2000 average extent, and is generally consistent with a decline of August sea ice extent since 1979.

George Will got the snowball rolling, and it continues to roll! Here is another article in the media along the same lines: "Whatever Happened to Global Warming" in the Daily Mail newspaper, 10/14/09.

The Daily Mail Story is more right-wing nonsense. It is opinion and nothing more written by a non-scientist. First, it says that NASA scientists say the warmest year on record was 1934, followed by 1998. The next three runner-ups are 1921, 2006 and 1931." The statement is not even true. NASA scientists say those are the warmest year on record for the United States and not for the globe as a whole. NASA says the warmest year on record for the whole world was 2005, followed by 2007 in a tie with 1998. Further, according to NASA: "The ten warmest years all occur within the 12-year period 1997-2008."

If the Daily Mail is looking for warming, they do not have to look so far!!!!

The global warming movement is a religion... Plain and simple. It's belief in a theory that can not be questioned, or you'll be called a heretic, and has not been proved. The U.N. loves this because the kyoto protocol gives the U.N. sovereignty over nations.
Now, the science community is saying there will be an ice age. So which is it?

Satellite reveals faster melting of polar ice

"A NASA satellite has revealed more accurately than ever that polar ice in Antarctica and Greenland is melting from glaciers and ice sheets far faster than scientists had previously thought, a discovery that one UC Berkeley climate expert calls "ominous and distressing."

"Using a laser aboard an orbiting spacecraft that precisely measures minute changes in the thickness of glaciers and ice sheets, scientists with the British Antarctic Survey calculate that along the coast of West Antarctica's Amundsen Sea, for example, the massive Pine Island glacier and two others thinned by nearly 30 feet a year from 2003 to 2007, 50 percent faster than the glacier's thinning rate between 1995 and 2003."

"In Greenland, the satellite's radar has shown that 111 fast-flowing glaciers are now thinning at an average rate of nearly 3 feet a year - much more rapidly than previous estimates based on less precise instruments, according to the scientists tabulating the satellite's radar measurements."

"A report on the survey's findings, published today in the journal Nature, also says glaciers on the coast of East Antarctica are thinning three times faster than scientists previously believed."

This week, the doomsters were embarrassed to learn, once again, that the planet was not in grave peril. Antarctica, their greatest candidate for catastrophe, was not melting at an ever-faster rate, according to a report in Geophysical Research Letters, but at the slowest rate in 30 years. To add to their frustration, they couldn’t even lash out at the lead author, Marco Tedesco of the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department of City College of New York — the doomsters had praised his previous reports showing high rates of Antarctic melt.

George Will was noting that the world had stopped warming, many months ago in his columns. Now climate correspondents at both the New York Times and the BBC have noted that the world actually stopped warming in 1998, and are starting to cover the topic in a more balanced way, presenting points of view on both sides of the subject. Even the Washington Post has a weatherman who is a self-proclaimed sceptic of global warming, to balance the more alarmist members of its staff.

George Will is a trend setter. Expect to see some of his other global warming themes repeated by others in the main stream media over the next few months.

According to R2: "George Will is a trend setter!" In reality, he has been repeating the same lies about warming for years. In his last column, he misquoted NOAA and even they put up a statement on their site that what he said was false. He is a climate clown the way the other deniers are whose ideologies always come first.

It is a problem with the modern media the way they feel reporting must represent "two sides." Scientifically, there are no two sides. There are no respectable climate scientists on the other side of anthropogenic climate change. In fact, even industry is moving away from such groups as the Chamber of Commerce that because of a regressive climate change stance are continually losing members. Even energy companies no longer publicly back such denier groups! The Bush administration discredited the view, while doing little. Denier groups are now and have long been in the same company with the "birthers" and "deathers." Afterr all, how often do they turn to a real study to back any of their bloviations?

Another media source influenced by George Will: The Christian Science Monitor.

Its 10/10/09 news article is "Biggest News You've Never Heard: Earth Isn't Warming" by Patrik Jonsson.

Again we have an article that states some previously unspeakable simple facts about global temperature, and which is brave enough to provide room for differing viewpoints about the significance of the temperature data, without name calling or insults.

In a recent article, George Will tried to make the usual denier propagandistic statement

Will said: "As global levels of sea ice declined last year, many experts said this was evidence of man-made global warming. Since September, however, the increase in sea ice has been the fastest change, either up or down, since 1979, when satellite record-keeping began. According to the University of Illinois’ Arctic Climate Research Center, global sea ice levels now equal those of 1979."

Only the University of Illinois’ Arctic Climate Research Center — has become weary of having their data misreported by global warming deniers like Will. They posted a reply on their website:

"In an opinion piece by George Will published on February 15, 2009 in the Washington Post, George Will states “According to the University of Illinois’ Arctic Climate Research Center, global sea ice levels now equal those of 1979.”

"We do not know where George Will is getting his information, but our data shows that on February 15, 1979, global sea ice area was 16.79 million sq. km and on February 15, 2009, global sea ice area was 15.45 million sq. km. Therefore, global sea ice levels are 1.34 million sq. km less in February 2009 than in February 1979. This decrease in sea ice area is roughly equal to the area of Texas, California, and Oklahoma combined."

"It is disturbing that the Washington Post would publish such information without first checking the facts."

If George Will and the denying crowd is going to post the denier lies they should occasionally address real data sources like these below, but never do.

Regarding sea level rise, "This data has shown a more-or-less steady increase in Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) of around 3.3 ± 0.4 mm/year from 1992 until today. This is more than 50% larger than the average value over the 20th century."

The data for sea level rise, from satellite measurements, does indicate an increase of 3.3 mm per year, which is equal to a sea level rise of about 1.12 feet per century. Note that the most recent alarmist prediction from the IPCC is for a 6 feet rise in sea level over the next century.

How can the IPCC support a 6 feet prediction, when the satellite data indicates only a rise of 1.12 feet per century? Further, how can the IPCC support a 6 feet prediction, when actual tide station measurements often indicate rates of sea level rise even lower than 3.3 mm per year? For example, the Los Angeles tide station data indicates a .83 mm per year increase, or about 3 inches per 100 years?

It is much easier to explain the differences between a Los Angeles tide station and your satellite data (LA sits on land to the west of the San Andreas Fault, and is sliding northwest a bit over time), than to explain the recent 6 feet prediction, when compared to the satellite data and the tide station data.

Yes , scientists agree satellite data is most accurate. "A central problem in identifying trends in sea level from tidal gauge data is how to account for vertical land movements." Nearby tidal stations vary enough to make comparison's meaningless. So tidal stations are a poor proxy for sea level rise to begin with.

Besides sea levels have already risen 8 inches in the last 120 years.

Therefore, regarding sea level rise, "This data has shown a more-or-less steady increase in Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) of around 3.3 mm/year from 1992 until today. This is more than 50% larger than the average value over the 20th century."

So why is a 6 foot rise in sea levels a possibility?

Mountaintop glacier melt contirbutes a third to sea level rise and it is accelerating. Antarctica and Greenland glacial melt contributes about a third to sea level rise and their melt is accelerating.

"A NASA satellite has revealed more accurately than ever that polar ice in Antarctica and Greenland is melting from glaciers and ice sheets far faster than scientists had previously thought, a discovery that one UC Berkeley climate expert calls "ominous ."

So why make a fake case about scientists crying wolf and then build a whole case upon a poor proxy measure for sea level rise like tidal stations and then repeat the lie about temperatures flat to declining since 1998?

George Will has found an easy target to write about in in Global Warming. The alarmists have cried "wolf" for years and years. He simply has to ask, where are the wolf tracks in the snow, where is the skat?

The alarmists have cried "accelerated sea level rise" but the tide stations everywhere indicate no accelerated rise, even a slowing.

The alarmists have cried "accelerated temperature rise" but the global temperature has been flat to declining 1998.

There is nothing more embarrassing than to see a grown man who is supposed to be a doctor tell a man who has told him that he suffers Major Depressive Disorder and previously attempted suicide to go to the emergency room since he cannot afford the expensive medication. The Georgia Congressman did that and it made me furious. He was so callous and smug until I just switched the channel.

This type of corruption is what has happened in the European Union. So many exemptions have been made to favored industries that it has turned the entire carbon emission reduction effort into a fiasco. Not only has there been no reduction in the EU’s carbon emissions in the four years the EU has imposed cap and trade, emission rates have actually accelerated at a faster rate than those of the US. Nations are even giving rebates to industries whose energy costs are skyrocketing in an attempt to keep them from fleeing to foreign soils. Meanwhile all these machinations cost huge sums of money. Who pays for it? The taxpayers and consumers.

Actually Olbermann is the left's equivalent of Glenn Beck. The difference is that Olbermann isn't nearly as good at it as Beck is.

Both are demogogues. Both try to incite their audience. But Beck seems to dig up much more convincing facts.
