Move by bike: Can it be a new trend? :

The point made is that in places like Boulder, where people rent smallish apartments and semi-frequently move short distances to other apartments (lookin' at you, New York, Portland, Austin and other compact renting cities), if you get enough folks together, you can skip the truck. And we all hate renting moving trucks. Especially in New York.

I read somewhere that a study was done in England that showed that the carbon used to replace the calories burned in short walks (2 blocks or less) is greater than the carbon and pollution used by a car to go the same distance.

I am actually walking stuff down the street to my new digs. Only two blocks down. Walking the latest and earliest means of transportation.

I just have to ask - is it still green if 5 of your friends have to load up in cars/SUVs to drive all their bike equipment over? I'd like to see what you have to do when it comes to moving your bed. Sounds like a fun idea, but just not practical.

I would bet that they just road their bike equipment over. The trailers that they used can easily haul a bed. Look closer at the photo.

I hadn't read the full article - so yeah, I see that they have mattresses on a trailer.

I just don't see that many people having friends with bike trailers all living in the same neighborhood or within an easy riding distance. At least one or more are going to have to drive there.

Living in Austin, I can say that outside of a few select areas, if you tried to do this, you'd probably get run over, or at the very least harassed by the police.

It's pretty easy to get around Boulder by bike. It's not a fad when you can get to work faster via the bike paths than you can on the congested roads. It's just being practical.

Its not a fad we are third world.
In NH we have people that bicycle to work(at Walmart) in the winter in snow.
They risk their life for 7.25 an hour. Its not a choice.
