What's Your Reaction?

A brawl between a cabbie and pedicab driver was caught on tape Monday by a local Fox 5 news crew.

While out shooting for a story on the rising value of New York City taxi medallions, photojournalist Al Daughtry stumbled upon the altercation right in front of the Ed Sullivan Theater where David Letterman films the Late Show.

Luckily reporter Reid Lamberty and a camera man from Entertainment Tonight, who happened to be doing a segment on the Letterman sex scandal, were there to step in before it got too ugly.

The pedicabs really make NYC third world- regardless of how "green" they spin this they are simply in the way. There is this weird fight for vehicular rights- cyclists, pedicabs, and commuters on alternative transport (roller bladers, scooters motorcyclists etc).
What they all have in common is their aggression towards pedestrians.

I love pedicabs. Can you imagine the city without stupid smelly cabs and pedicabs instead. We could breathe.

This is what can happen in a city that deprives their citizens of the Constitutional guarantee to bear arms. Neither party would have assaulted the other if they had a reasonable suspicion that the other was carrying a gun.

You don't throw drinks at people who might shoot you. Likewise, you don't run over bicyclists that are packing heat.

In Tampa gunshots would have been exchanged.

I'm actually quite happy to see them fight. Both types of cabs are viruses in NYC.

The yellow cabs drive like maniacs - cutting people off, going slow in the hunt for passengers, running through red lights and just general reckless driving. You've gotta drive very aggressively around yellow cabs to keep them at bay. That means not giving an inch. That inch equals an accident either by you stopping suddenly and getting hit from behind or not stopping fast enough and having the cab hit you. Sometimes, they stradle two lanes. I'll drive around them, squeeze if I have to, and swing into the lane close enough to push them into ONE lane. It's crazy that I have to drive so aggressively to get those animals to drive properly.

Then the pedicabs are slow and always in the way. They take up space on the street. I remember I was trying to park my car and the pedicab is literally taking up two spaces because he wants to talk on his cell phone. Sometimes, traffic is moving smoothly and then you see traffic thicken up. When you get close, you realize it's a pedicab trolling along the side.

I really wished they'd beat each other up a bit more, maybe knock out some teeth, break an arm or leg so they can't work for a while. That would bring joy to my heart, seriously.

Isn't hitting someone on a bike with a car intentionally like that assault with a deadly weapon?

Assault with a deadly weapon, improvising. Tom-may-toe / toe-mah-toe?

You're on the right path. Besides a lot of other laws being broken I think the specific law refers to using the car as a weapon. So, yeah that cab driver should be facing some serious charges. I'm surprised that's all that's been said about it. Interesting to me how the NYPD operate these days. They'll put a pothead through the ringer in a split second but there isn't much happening to a guy who uses his car as a weapon. Go figure.

Not that I am for fighting in the street, but that was a lame tussle. On the road rage issue here in Albuquerque two teens who thought that they had been slighted in traffic proceeded to fire shots at the "offending" car. Unluckily for them that car was being driven by an off-duty cop. It did not turn out well for all involved.

I wonder if anyone thought it was a Letterman Stunt..

As someone who has driven a cab in NYC, I can attest that pedi-cab drivers are an immense pain in the you-know-what. They frequently disregard traffic rules and make bad traffic worse. It is insane to allow these things in a city like New York. Having said that, the cab driver should not have escalated the situation.

Yeah...I'd say the cabbie might be guilty of assualt with a deadly weapon (the van)......he took it to the felony level.

You mean, "escalated" as in throwing a drink out the window at the pedi-cab driver and then cutting in front of him to run him off the road?

That sort of escalation?

Nevermind. The pedicab threw the drink, it was the van cab driver who tried to run over the pedicab guy after that.

As someone who has driven BEHIND a cabbie in NYC, I can attest that cabbies are a pain in the you-know-what. They have a habit of stopping whenever, wherever, right in front of you to let a customer out with no regard for the following traffic.
