What's Your Reaction?
Carey Mulligan

British newcomer Carey Mulligan is already drawing Oscar buzz and Audrey Hepburn comparisons for her performance in 'An Education,' a small Sundance film out Friday in wide release by Sony Pictures Classics.

Mulligan, now 24, stars as a 16-year-old schoolgirl who falls for a much older playboy (Peter Sarsgaard) and the glamorous life he carves out for her in the drab postwar London suburbs--and ends up getting a bumpy education in the ways of the world. It's hard to predict whether a nationwide, Polanski-chastened audience will embrace a teenager's wide-eyed romance with a lover twice her age, but the story (scripted by Nick Hornby) is nuanced and sweet. Mulligan is adorable, charming and full of nascent star power.

She recently shared the stage with Sarsgaard in Chekhov's 'The Seagull' and played Kitty Bennet in 'Pride and Prejudice.' Next up: 'Wall Street 2,' in which she costars with her boyfriend, Shia LaBeouf. Mulligan talked with us about how her career has taken off--and was circumspect on the subject of Shia.

On not being a big name--yet:

"My life hasn't really changed. No one knew who I was in 'The Seagull,' and that's still the case. It's been most of the year now since Sundance, and we keep saying, 'When's it going to come out?' Peter [Sarsgaard] and I did 'The Seagull' together on Broadway and he would give me lifts home every night and he would say, 'Don't expect it to sell.' He would manage my expectations because it wasn't a particularly good year to be in an independent film."

On playing 16 at 22:
"I've always played parts younger than myself. My first job I was 15, 16 and I was 18, 19 in real life. Then I did a play where I was 14. So it wasn't really a concern to me... I didn't really think there was a huge difference between being 16 and 24. It's really small changes that you make. You're better at capping your emotions, and I made my voice a tiny bit higher because I've got quite a low voice in real life, but that was it, really."

On the letter that started her career:

"My letter was to Julian Fellowes who'd given a talk at our school when I was about 17 and about winning the oscar for 'Gosford Park' and being a screenwriter and was the only actor I'd ever met in my life. I applied to drama school and didn't get in. And in using places on my university application to apply for drama school I didn't get any places at university. My parents were quite upset at me...So I wrote to him, 'You came to my school and I met you briefly and I know that I want to act but I don't think I'm going to get through the three years before I can get back to drama school.' He took me out to dinner with a bunch of other people who'd written the same type of letters whether they wanted to be actors or writers...and I met Joe Wright and auditioned about three times for 'Pride and Prejudice' and that's how I got the job."

On the superstars she's learned from:

"I didn't go to drama school, my first job was 'Pride and Prejudice' so from the beginning I've been so lucky to be surrounded by people I admire. Like Day 1, Judi Dench...I guess Emma Thompson has been the biggest female influence. Our day, because we had one day to shoot all our scenes together, I quite liked. She was amazing. She knew the first names of the whole crew by about 11 in the morning. And then in the evening we ran over by about half an hour and she got beer and wine and pizza for the whole crew and had a 'we ran over' party."

On how she met boyfriend Shia LaBeouf on the set of 'Wall Street 2' (the short version):

"We met when we had a round table read through with everyone back in August. We had about three weeks of rehearsal and now we're shooting. I play Gordon Gekko's daughter so I've gone against the finance world."

She's got the baby face down, but sounds like a 30 y.o to me, not a precocious teen.

You lot of people who can't get sensationalist news out of your head are just sad.
First: 16 is the age of consent in many places around the world, do three minutes of research before you start yelling about statutatory r_pe.

Secondly, if you're going to judge the movie before watching it then don't bother thinking that your opinion is worth anything.

As for me, I'll wait and see.
There is something to be said for the 'coming of age' tale that never seems to lose its appeal with audiences.

I agree on a couple of points. The coming of age story in which a teenage girl is involved with a much older man in nothing new in film. It is a topic quite relentlessly visited. It seems that Lynn Barber has no lost love for this older man. He was a scummy sort; which, may be the reason why some people judge these situations so harshly. It also may be projection.

I can handle seeing a 24-y/o portray a 16 y/o if it's convincing.

Ellen Page was an adult when she portrayed a high schooler in JUNO.

Has Polanski's sexual tryst with 15-year-old Natassja Kinski been forgotten? He cast a beautiful 15 y/o to play 15 y/o TESS and took advantage of her, too. The guy has a very public track record of using adolescent girls for his sexual fulfillment.

Tess was filmed in France where the age of consent is 15. I don't want to stop you from expressing your outrage, however. I'm just giving you a fact. He didn't break any laws, just probably offended your sense of morality.

The Europeans got rid of the Puritans several hundred years ago and good for them. Unfortunately the latter came to America with all the consequences. As a result, an average American today cannot see the difference between the story of this movie and the Polanski case. SO, to clarify, one is a love story (being in a relationship at 16 in England - and in most of the developed world - is not a crime), the other is a rape case.

Oh please. Tell Americans about Puritanism when in the UK theyve pulled a photo of ten yr old Brooke Shields out of Tate. In America it was displayed at another gallery some years ago and no one made a FUSS. Brits have this deep-seated animosity towards Americans and its understandable-you're all perpetually envious of Americans.

In America it was published in Penthouse two or three decades ago. Just owning that issue in the U.S. would probably get you a lifetime listing as a sex offender today.

Im an American - the guy is right, relatively speaking the US is much more puritanical than the UK. You citing one exception is not an argument. Even in the 70s the UK regularly had nudity and cursing on tv (long before cable) and mass circulation newspapers. There Ive seen your point and raised you one.

The US does not show boobs on or allows the F word on TV. Depending on the time of night In Canada we do. You are uptight America, but you show more violence, you go.

What specifically is it about Americans that make the Brits jealous. They seem to have a fine country and they're healthier, according to stats.

I sort of see where you are coming from, but under no circumstances can a 16 year old enter into an informed consensual relationship with an adult.

I disagree. It really depends on the 16 year old. It's why in a lot of places 16 is the age of consent.

Really? Are you talking about the law? Or are you just expressing a personal opinion?

I think Polanski's issue causes an uproar for more than just the sex.

He plead guilty, then fled the country. WTF?

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:18 AM on 10/07/2009

Do you know why he fled the country?

Well said. Our Puritan heritage is an almost daily pox on our political and social life. Church interfering in elections, the radical right and evangelicals politicizing all manner of purely moral issues. Religious litmus tests for political office. Quite honestly, if a professed atheist were to run for high office, I would campaign tirelessly for his/her election. It would have to be an improvement.

"You're not a woman" Bam! I could feel that from here. Emma Thompson is amazing. Rites of passage are seriously missing in our culture. Religion is gone (in many ways for the better) but ritual is important in holding the psyche together.

Relax, people. And get a life.

It's a true story - about a 16 year old girl (the age of consent in Britain) - that took place back in the 1960's, and is based on a book by the girl/woman herself. Should she not tell her own story because it's now not politcally correct. That is absolutely ridiculous.

And what does any of this have to do with Roman Polanski???

Between this and the overreaction to the Letterman story, I'm beginning to think this country is going backwards and getting MORE puritanical.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:08 PM on 10/06/2009

News flash: The move back toward Puritanism has been attempted for some time, including the silver ring thing where you pledge virginity until marriage, the born-again Christian movement and creationism/literal interpretations of the Bible. Despite the attempt of conservatives to turn back the clock, they are in conflict with popular culture, not to mention the power of sexuality. And then you have the interesting duality of Fixed News, which decries assaults on "morality" while hypocritically illustrating its stories (and titillating its viewers) with video of nubile young women bouncing around in bikinis.

I'm sorry but the lead girl looks old. I'm not too interested in the film. This is a dvd film when there's only Golf on tv.

Is it just me or are there always endless films about this topic? I remember being seventeen and a thirty four year old man wanted to date me and I thought my brothers would hit the roof. I didn't understand at all at the time but I sure do now. Look, all you men of a certain age who want permission to bonk girls half your age - just do it - don't try and write books about it or make movies - we've all seen it before. At the end of the day it's just not that interesting.
