What's Your Reaction?
Craig Ferguson

(JAKE COYLE, AP) NEW YORK -- Of all of those reacting to David Letterman's situation, Craig Ferguson had a unique perspective.

As the host of the "Late Late Show" on CBS, he follows Letterman's "Late Show." Letterman also is his boss, since Letterman's production company, Worldwide Pants, produces the "Late Late Show."

Yet it's Ferguson's job to make fun of the biggest news stories of the day. And, lately, his boss qualifies. Since announcing on "Late Show" last week that he had had sex with female members of his staff and been the victim of a $2 million blackmail threat, Letterman has played prominently in the news.

Ferguson pointed out his awkward position Monday, asking his audience to "put yourself in my position."

"The person you work for, the person you admire and respect, is caught in an embarrassing situation," said Ferguson. "And your job is to be funny about that, whilst trying to keep your own job."

"So this is my last show," he joked.

Ferguson did make light of the situation, joking that it had now been revealed how he got the job in the first place.

WATCH:

But Ferguson defended Letterman, calling him "the king of late-night television."

"If we are now holding late-night talk show hosts to the same moral accountability as we hold politicians or clergymen, I'm out," said Ferguson. "I'm gone."

Ferguson has never claimed to have a perfect past. He recently released a memoir ("American on Purpose") reflecting on his struggle with alcoholism.

"I quite like my entertainers to be dangerous. I like my musicians to be kind of drug-fueled," Ferguson said. "Cause if you want entertainers to be squeaky clean, then who are you going to be watching? Jonas Brothers."

Other late-night comics have handled the situation in various ways but have mostly gone easy on Letterman.

Jay Leno, Letterman's old rival and now host of "The Jay Leno Show" on NBC, featured it in his monologue on Friday but skipped it altogether Monday. Conan O'Brien, the new host of the "Tonight" show, avoided it on Friday and again stayed clear in his monologue Monday.

Jon Stewart didn't mention it on Monday's "The Daily Show," nor did Stephen Colbert on "The Colbert Report." Jimmy Kimmel skipped it on Friday's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

Even the legendary late-night host Dick Cavett had nothing but praise for Letterman's skill at crisis management.

"To me, it seems Dave Letterman's handling of this is impeccable," Cavett said in an e-mail. "Brave, direct and – dare I say it? – manly. He has set a real example here of exactly how to behave when assaulted in such a sleazy operation."

I don't get all the prissiness around this subject.

1. Letterman's wife didn't seem to much care, since she married him AFTER this happened.

2. Why worry about the "power differential?" Letterman was clearly not making sex part of her job description, or trading favors for advancement, or giving her unwanted attention. There does not seem to be a predatory aspect to this, which is the thing that bothers me about power differentials.

I think we have gone too far with the sexual harassment business. Men and women in close quarters have always been attracted to each other and have often acted on this attraction. And just because he was her "superior" at work, in no way implies that he is her superior in life. Plus, sleeping with someone more knowledgeable or experienced than you are can be exciting and stimulating and educational. It is not necessarily submissive or subservient. And it usually ends up something of a mutual exchange on many levels.

What is so terrible about being alive and human and interested in people that you know? I say if all the involved parties are ok with it, then good for them.

I don't think she knew, but you are right, this doesn't affect us. I think it's pushing it to suggest that it was sexual harassment. Some people like banging the boss, and some bosses are okay with it.

Letterman handled it brilliantly. Adult, responsible and decent. He's done this sort of thing before, admit when he's made a mistake (The situation of genus comedian Bill Hicks comes to mind), and he is 100 percent a class act. (Besides anyone who watched the show could see the real affection and love tween Birkett and Letterman and it's no one else's business what two adults decide to do.)

Craig handlled it perfectly. He mined laughs by straining to not talk about Letterman.
There's nobody better on late night.

Craig Ferguson is and has been the funniest late night comedian for years. He's witty, quick, classy and totally hilarious.

I think it's because he puts his 'humanness' out there a bit more than the others, so he comes across as more genuine - people are more able to connect with him.

That's not to say that the others are fake or frauds, but just that there is a certain amount of showmanship that late night talk show hosts have to put out there, which makes their demeanour appear to be more forced. Ferguson doesnt seem to do that, or struggle with it ( I think Fallon struggles with this a bit, which is why he can be cringeowrthy to watch).

Well, thats my 2 cents worth for the day...

No only is witty, quick, classy, and totally hilarious ... he's a one-man show.

No band (he even sings his own theme song -- for real!) ...
No sidekick (doesn't need one) ...
Advances his own teleprompter ...
His sister is on the writing staff ...
Great author ...

The man is just plain amazing.

Craig is one of a kind and people do connect with him. He feels like a good friend who can crack you up every time. His talent is varied and he never takes himself too seriously.

I love his theme song!.

I'm getting pretty sick of people throwing out the term "sexual harassment." It's highly inappropriate, as that is an accusation of a crime, and there is NO evidence to support that accusation. A woman sleeping with her boss isn't AUTOMATICALLY the victim of sexual harassment. If she's genuinely attracted to him and the feelings are mutual, then it's not harassment. It's just natural human attraction.

When one of these women steps forward and says Letterman made her job contingent on sleeping with him, then you can accuse him of sexual harassment. Until then this is just the inevitable result of single people working together in a creative enterprise. When you work in close quarters with someone, spending all of your time having fun and making up jokes (these people are comedy writers, remember), it's easy to fall in love.

Seriously. the way some people go on and on about this, I would understand why a man in a position like Letterman would refuse to hire any women at all. Why take the risk?

"When one of these women steps forward and says Letterman made her job contingent on sleeping with him, then you can accuse him of sexual harassment."

I wouldn't even go that far. That would make an investigation necessary, but it wouldn't make it true necessarily. Are you saying that people never lie about this?

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:19 PM on 10/06/2009

Well yes "people lie about this" unless they find themselves being deposed in court. Of course, with legal advice they can always take the fifth. Or they can make a nice settlement and make it all go away.

Ooh, ouch. That would be sex discrimination. Not hiring women is way more illegal than consensually going to bed with one you did hire.

All the people who "go on and on about this" in a way that makes you sick of the subject, are making you sick because you don't have any sense that there has been any real wrongdoing. And you're right. Real sexual harassment leaves no one with the slightest doubt that there has been wrongdoing.

Craig Ferguson defending David Letterman?!

That's almost as shocking as any entertainer defending the head of the company that produces his show and made him a late night star! Shocking, I say! Next Craig will be thanking Letterman and Worldwide Pants whenever he receives an award!

The thing about Letterman which bothers me is not that he had an affair (who cares??).. He obviously had a 'special' arrangement with his now-wife throughout these many years. But with whom he had the affair(s) - that's what bothers me. He has access to the most gorgeous starlets decked out to the hilt (in their glitzy dresses and high heels) every night of the week. They would make fine behind the scenes (unobjectionable) 'love trysts' But NO - get involved instead with a college gal (a third his age) in his employ?? How WRONG is that and WORSE... to parade her every night handing out tix for this contest or that. Plus she was a comically odd duck in that her demeanor (so rigid) was funny. Now it's less FUNNY. What we know is that the whole time, he was acting inappropriately towards her (as boss to employee) That, to me, is unconscionable.

Whatever cleverness I felt he had FLEW right out the window; and, if 58 percent of his audience is women, he might find he lost some over this. (ME)

You're assuming he didn't do it with any of "the most gorgeous starlets decked out to the hilt (in their glitzy dresses and high heels) every night of the week."

What a bunch of ridiculous pseudo-feminist nonsense.

First of all, you really need to check the assumptions underlying your comment "He has access to the most gorgeous starlets decked out to the hilt (in their glitzy dresses and high heels) every night of the week. They would make fine behind the scenes (unobjectionable) 'love trysts'." How utterly demeaning, both to men and women. It takes more than physical beauty and a nice dress to create attraction, and a man who sleeps with women for such trivial reasons is definitely guilty of being an objectifying sleazeball, treating women as mere objects.

I mean really, you think it would be better for Dave to treat women like notches in his bedpost? GROSS! Given than none of the women Dave has been involved with are "stunners," I think we can assume that there is a deeper connection there than just "She's pretty, I should bang her."

You should tear up your feminist card, sister. You're getting it all wrong.

She DOES demean women with her looksist judgment about who's not an objectionable sex partner and also the assumption that this particular woman wasn't confident and in full control of herself own sex life.

Speaking as a woman, all of this stuff makes me pretty concerned. Guess there is no progress at all in making men in power accountable, women are still expected to sleep with the boss if they want to keep their job. Ferguson can be expected to defend Letterman, but should just keep quiet. Letterman creeps me out, he even admitted as much.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:54 PM on 10/06/2009

give Letterman and his PR crew high marks for getting "out in front" of a scandal and making David the victim...nice job guys..lucky for you there was someone around who was even sleazier than Letterman. Sexual harrassment in the workplace is such an issue that only a fool or an arrogant ass would become sexually involved with someone who works for him/her.....Letterman, obviously, is not a fool. The question of what level of "moral accountability" is appropriate for public figures is still very much unanswered.....for years it was "zero"; the media hid their knowledge of such matters and only the check-out counter tabloids would even touch such issues. Now everyone is fair game...and the juicier the better....how about color photos and, if we're really lucky, video (wow,, could live video feed from motel rooms be far behind)....we could cheer for our favorite late-night host's performance .......personally, I don't care what they do....so long as they contain their hypocrisy....if you're a "cad" be an honest cad...Errol Flynn comes to mind....but please don't get caught and then snivel before the cameras.......Letterman was far more clever...he was "just contrite enough" for you to not really condemn him and yet "just arrogant enough" for you to admire his "courage"......maybe the new crop of politicians should study his technique......

This is Dave's replacement when he decides to step down.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Craigs is the sharpest and smartest talk show dude on TV. Who else could make a difficult situation humorous while at the same time show empathy towards Dave...

No one is even close in my book.

Craig Ferguson is brilliant! This just shows how much insight he adds to the issue at hand, and he does it with such class. This is a great clip but he ran with it the whole show long, even up to the "What Did We Learn On The Show Tonight Craig?" Meow.
I record the show every night, even if I'm watching it, because you just don't want to let something get past you and say to yourself, what did he just say? And he does this stuff SOBER?!?!
