ZDNet calls PhotoSketch, a new web-based program developed by a group of students in China, "quite possibly the coolest thing I've ever seen a computer do."

We couldn't agree more. The application takes a simple sketch (see screengrab below) and converts it into a detailed, digital, realistic, very cool photo.

How? Watch the video below and prepare to be amazed. Basically, the program takes the sketch (and the tags on it), scours the web for photos that match, then stitches them together using an algorithm.

I think this will allow to visually convey complex concepts... a better approach than trying to sketch it on a whiteboard.... Is this tool available?

While this is very cool, I have a problem with it as it seems to draw the images from the internet with total disregard to licensing issues.

Every new technology brings its pros and cons, but just think of the creative things that can be done with personal art, photography, and images. I didn't see anything that can't be done with Photoshop, but PS is very tedious for the novice user. This opens a new avenue for creativity, while to your point, presents some potential dangers as well.

you think people using photoshop care about licensing issues? Ever use a PS before? Go ahead and try to create every image by yourself.

Good for Communist China they can manipulate their propaganda by just sketching.
