"held indefinately...can't be brought to trial because there is insufficient evidence against them."

My dog is an Afghan.
I'm afraid I just can't always vouch for his whereabouts.

I guess the government could come and arrest him and hold him indefinately, because there is insufficient evidence against him.

Send them to Massachusetts. Or, better yet, send them to one of those cities that receives illegal aliens against the laws of the United States.

They've benn held too long, just release them all in Kerry's and Pelosi's backyards.

Um, Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld backyards!

they should not be accorded our constitutional rights. Period. They are the enemy. Swift and certain justice? Here? They must be kidding. It will take years. Years to try them and years to execute them if found guilty. And best of all, We the People get to foot the bill again.
09:27 AM on 10/08/2009
How do you know they're the enemy when they haven't been given a trial?
09:35 AM on 10/08/2009
When taken from the battlefield, they are the en emy.
09:36 AM on 10/08/2009
I don't suppose you ever heard of jihad either. The one thing the enemy understands is that they get back what the deal out.

Oh great. More Heath care to be paid by the American taxpayer. Grandma should really worry about her Medicare when the US goes broke. Yeah, I know the Guantanamo prisoners got Heath care, but I thought it came out of the defense budget
10:06 AM on 10/08/2009
Does it really matter since we are still paying for it either way.

Do Americans realize how crazy and irrational the argument that they are too dangerous for normal trials and normal prisons seems? The US has the largest prison population in the world. Some of those people could be categorized as very dangerous, but there was no need for gulag camps, secret evidence and tortured confessions when bringing them to justice. Do these handcuffed beard guys in orange suits have some kind of superpowers? Or is it that in proceedings even closely resembling modern criminal trials the government would have to admit that they have no evidence and that they were kept for so long because releasing them would be embarrassing for the government?

Excellent points here, thank you.

The federal gov't is full of paranoid control freaks. They even spied on a senior citizens activist group, The Grey Panthers. (Peter Jennings reported that on abc news many years ago.) Now how paranoid is that?

We need smaller gov't - not Obama/Bush global gov't.

Maybe the "terrorists" should be moved to Chicago and organize kids to defend themselves. Daley sure won't do anything.

"Administration officials said recently that it was unlikely they would meet President Obama’s Jan. 22 deadline to close the prison. Mr. Obama’s aides have declined to set another deadline as they struggle to find a places in the United States willing to accept detainees awaiting trial." (NYT article)

Actually, I think this statement is far more germane to the issue than the one you chose for your headline.

So now it has been agreed that the prisoners may be tried in the US, but congress has categorically stated that they may not be dispersed in the US.

What then, pray tell, happens to them after their trials?

Any chance that any are found innocent because they were coerced by TORTURE to sign their "ADMISSIONS"?

You know before the election almost 70% of the public wanted Gitmo closed. Then little Dickie Cheney went on his "you better be afraid, you better be really, really afraid, because if one of these dudes get loose, he might come after me and I have a life long history of being very, very aftraid" and now there is no support for closing Gitmo. I guess we were just kidding? Obama should have known we didn't really mean it. He should have known that we are all scared to death of very small men from a third world country.

There is no evidence to support that the prisoners at Gitmo have super natural powers or that our maximum security prisons are so inept that they would allow them to run free to interact with the other inmates recruiting our own home grown crazies to join Al Qaeda. We have never lost a prisoner in a maximum security prison even though our own bad guys have far greater access to outside support.

If I were Obama I would be ready to turn them all loose on the Democrats in Congress. This is probably the most cowardly behavior ever demonstrated by American's afraid of Boogeymen.
