Pelosi Calls NRCC Comments "Sad," "Inappropriate"

Republicans don't have to worry about putting Nancy Pelosi "in her place," the Speaker told reporters Thursday: She's already there.

"I'm in my place," Pelosi said at her weekly press conference, responding for the first time to a Tuesday statement from the National Republican Congressional Committee that suggested she be muzzled for daring to voice House concerns about possible troop escalation in Afghanistan. "I'm the Speaker of the House, the first woman Speaker of the House and I'm in my place because the House of Representatives voted me there."

Democrats quickly lambasted the Republican comment earlier in the week, but NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain doubled down. "Nancy Pelosi might think she's a general, but she's playing out of her league and she knows it," Spain said in a statement Tuesday.

For her part, Pelosi seemed almost bemused by the attack Thursday, but didn't mince words. "It's really sad they really don't understand how inappropriate that is," she said. "That language is something I haven't heard in decades."
