Woman Blames Bank Of America For Husband's Death

Dead Husband

As part of the Huffington Post's efforts to bear witness to the effects of the current economic environment on ordinary Americans, we're rounding up some of the most compelling stories reported by local news organizations around the country.

Darleen Burbridge, a widow in Staten Island, New York, blames her husband's fatal heart attack on stress from dealing with a bad mortgage, reports Karen O'Shea of Staten Island's SI Live. Her late husband, John, died after months of struggling to change their mortgage plan once Darleen was laid off.

The two struggled to keep up with their payments, even borrowing money from their son, who also lost his job this year. In May they missed their first mortgage payment. In June John had a heart attack as he was getting ready for work. Darleen blamed the stress and anxiety caused by Bank of America's unresponsiveness to their repeated efforts to get a loan modification.. "I hold you responsible for killing my husband," she told them. She is still fighting to hold onto her house.

Burbridge now owes more than the home is worth, but has since acquired the assistance of state Sen. Andrew Lanza (R-Staten Island), whose office has seen an uptick in calls for help. The bank maintains that it is continuing to work with Burbridge to finance her home.

Kassy Fatooh and her husband had a good life. Then, reports Chris
Colin of SF Gate
, everything fell apart. First her husband lost his job. Then the two divorced. Then Fatooh and her two children got sick with mono, which turned into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for her and her teenage son. This turned into fibromyalgia, a condition that causes pain and extreme reactions to physical pressure. The medical bills piled up, Fatooh became too ill to continue going to work and, before long, the bank foreclosed on her house.

Now she and the children are living in a friend's mother's house. Fatooh, who lives in the county with the highest per-capita income in the nation, has been considering moving into a campground after being placed on a three-year-long waiting list for the county housing authority's affordable housing units. Too many people are in her position, she said, and the lines for assistance are too long.

"I hear the recession is over," she said, "but I don't see that."

Kenneth and Diane "Dee" Hetrick, of North Canton, Ohio, were already struggling under thousands of dollars of medical bills from Kenneth's muscular dystrophy. Then he lost his job and the bottom fell out. They filed for bankruptcy in 2005, reports Robert Want of the GateHouse
News Service
, but were still lost and confused about how Kenneth could continue to receive treatment. A counselor at a local medical center suggested a solution: get divorced. If Kenneth Hetrick were single he would be eligible to qualify for Medicaid. So, knowing that it would help Kenneth with the medical support he desperately needed, they did. Not because they didn't love each other, but so that he could continue to get treatment. (It's not rare a suggestion as
it should be
.)

"It was awful standing up there in divorce court saying I didn't want to be married to the love of my life," Dee Hetrick later wrote in an e-mail. "He has to sign a waiver at the hospital just so they can talk to me after his surgeries, because I'm not his wife!"

The strain of their debt turned into real relationship trouble, and earlier this year Kenneth moved out. What started as an administrative divorce to get him the medical care he needed turned into a real problem for a couple that just wanted to stay healthy. "I hope that the [health care] problem gets solved, so other people don't have to live through what I've suffered through," he said. "It don't have to be this way."

A couple near Martinsville, Ohio, are suing Bank of America for threatening to foreclose on their home. Gary Huffenberge of the Wilmington News Journal
reports
that Michael and Tamara Florea have been paying their loan as agreed upon under a mortgage modification made in January with Countrywide Home Loans. Later that month Countrywide was acquired by the Bank of America, which allegedly ignored the modification.

According to the Floreas' lawyers, Mrs. Florea made several calls to Bank of America and each person said the Floreas' loan modification was still being processed. In late July, Mrs. Florea was told by phone that the Bank of America would initiate foreclosure proceedings if she and her husband did not pay the past due balance and resume monthly payments of $924.

The case is still underway, but on Tuesday the Floreas had a minor victory when a court barred the bank for filing foreclosure while the case is pending.

The truth is that Bank of America and many other banks simply do not care about anything that doesn't translate into dollars. They are many human carcasses strewn along Main Street with the stamp of BofA, Chase, Wells Fargo, the apathetic GW Bush government. Obama's administration must stop its scattered efforts and focus upon this country's economy and its downtrodden and victimized citizens first. How great is the United States when milions upon millions of its citizens are drowning in economic quicksand? Yes, Afghanistan is unstable (thanks GW) but so are too many of this country's citizens, so let's take care of home first. Foreclosures, unemployment and layoffs are the festering sores that will cripple this country and band aids for its citizens while repeatedly bailing out big corporations and banks makes the United States goverment responsib le for the economic and psychological annihilation of its people. The history that will be written about this country's demise will read like a chilling horror story. But this story will be nonfiction...

If we keep this up banks will start screening loan applicants for pre existing medical conditions.

Do we really want that?

Awwww, how cute. You held a 1 person vote ). Glad you felt you could perform your civic duty.
Thing is, while you were holding your vote, I was out curling up in a nice Tempur-Pedic mattress in my properly heated house with the security system and the nice things inside, the alarm set to get me up so that I'm not late to my high-paying job, as I start yet another day of fairly stress-free living, looking forward to another weekend of doing whatever it is I like because I don't have to worry about anything.

Meanwhile you were here, bemoaning your bad fortune. Yup, I lost all right.

I am sickened by the ignorance and lack of compassion in many of the comments in this thread, clearly made by people who do not have underlying health problems that are exacerbated by stress and who have the good fortune not to have been laid off or foreclosed upon as a consequence of a job loss. Shame on you for your cynical disregard of human suffering.

Let's see who else she can blame.

The store for selling him bacon or other fatty products that he ate.
Her parents for not leaving her an inheritence to buy a home.
Her high school teachers for not pressing her to become a doctor so she can make more money.
All the restaurants she has ever eaten at for taking her money that could have gone to the mortgage.
The government for not "helping" them enough.
Her former boss for laying her off.

The list is endless!

Spoken like someone who has had the good fortune never to have had a health problem or to have lost a job. I lost my job 18 months ago due to companywide layoffs, and I'd like to tell you how quickly you can go through your savings. I don't have cable, I have a pay-as-you-go cell phone, my family doesn't eat out or go to movies, we buy our clothes at the thrift store. We are extremely frugal, but because of my age (late 50s), I doubt I'll find another job at the same level as I was. Stop blaming everyone who has had bad luck.

Oh please. She is saying Bof A is solely responsible for her woes, and no one else. That is the issue.

And yes, I have lost a job and yes, have been very ill and yes had to run through savings. But I did not blame anyone for that situation.

Banks fault. Come on, why not blame your old boss who let you go while your at it. More importantly, she's missing the one person who is ultimately responsible--BOOOSH!

Just pointing out- this is how gay couples feel 100% of the time.

The US is now paying big time for allowing itself to get distracted "defending marriage" when there were so many more important issues out there that needed fixing. The Roman Empire took about 300 years to collapse, but the 1000 Year Reich only lasted 12 years.

Let us spend one billion a week to fight and have our boys and girls killed in Afghanistan, for a country that if we left today, would just fight one another...that's what they do. All these people have ever known is to fight, how can you bring democracy to a country that just doesn't want it? And now the Saudis want us to give them billions to keep them afloat if their oil sales drop!

Yeah, less just keep on keeping every sorry nation in the world up and running, but heaven help us if we spend one cent for our own people. There's just something wrong with this equation. Why can't we just take care of our own, for once?

My guess is that the gentleman had a pre-existing condition and was probably having some early indicators of an impending heart attack with stress making it worse. He probably didn't want to go to the docs because of not wanting to add another few thousand (++) to their debt. I went thru the same sans heart attack, but the stress was unbearable. I was working part time jobs 18 hours a day just trying to make a quarter of what I was making prior. There will be a time when these too big to fail companies receive their comeuppance. Move your money to a local credit union.

There was a time when we weren't just a number to a bank, we were a client and our business was respected and desired. Now some bean counter makes decisions that blanket entire demographic categories with zero empathy towards anyones plight. Go small, go local (if BofA or someone else hasn't already bought them).

and there is another bean counter making your health care decisions ...

I called Bank of America, with which I had a small credit card balance, after they raised my interest rate despite the fact that I had never been late on or missed a payment. This is after I became disabled, and began living on less than $1400 a month. I told them that the rate increase would make it impossible to make the minimum payments. I then told them that they would not receive another penny from me. They began calling me as many as 6 times a day, using abusive and insulting language, informing me that they are "the biggest bank in the world" and could ruin me, and talking over me so I could not speak. ( One woman talked non-stop for 7 minutes -- I finally asked her if she was being paid by the word.) I listened patiently, and then informed her that I live in New York, my only source of income is Social Security disability, and that they would not get a judgment or be allowed to garnish my income. Suddenly, I began getting "warm and fuzzy" letters, begging me to pay something, anything, on my account. They will never see a dime. Ever. I don't like bullies, especially those who are "too big to fail," receive taxpayer bailouts, get huge bonuses for poor performance, and make obscene quarterly profits. I finally suggested that one of their executives skip just one expensive dinner on the company dime and wipe out my balance.
09:17 AM on 10/09/2009
Good for you, Sharon! The arrogance of these banks – after we taxpayers bail them out, this is the kind of treatment we get. Michael Moore is right. We life in either a plutocracy or a kleptocracy, but it sure isn't a democracy.

The change in rates might have came from your going on disablity. It happend to my mom, although it didn't change her credit rating, it went on her credit report. The look at is as an extenuating circumstance. Kind of like a bankruptsy. My sister recovered from a banruptsy way back when I was in college over the years she built her credit all the way back up, but despite a good credit score, fifteen years later companies still use it as an exuse to jack up her rates on things. It is a dishonest practice. We should run our credit system for things more like England, it is harder to get credit there but not everyone has access to your credit records like here.

Do more than that! Pay attention to who is making campaign contributions to your Congressperson, and your two Senators. If they are getting large donations from industries and begin to vote against the interest of their constituents (you) to favor those industries, then vote them out in the next election.
It is imperative that the we, the American people take back the control of our government and this is the only way we'll be able to do that.
