Colbert Skewers Beck For Constant Tears, Conspiracy Theories, General Insanity (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Beck Colbert

Stephen Colbert took on Glenn Beck again last night, this time "defending" the Fox News star by comparing Beck's sincerity to his own. Cobert showed clips of both he and Beck spouting insane conspiracy theories and sobbing on air, ending with a line destined for history: "It's like looking into a mirror...after you've done a ton of coke off it." He went to say, "Clearly Glenn Beck is as sincere in what he says and does as I am in believing baby carrots are trying to turn me gay."

This isn't the first time Colbert has ripped Beck apart. In March of this year he mocked Glenn's doomsday scenarios by creating a doom bunker; in April he slammed Beck for building his career on the back of 9/11; and, most recently, he took on Beck's advertiser exodus after Glenn called the president "racist."

When Stephen began the "Colbert Report" he modeled his satire off of Bill O'Reilly's show. But as Beck's dominance has grown, and his antics become more and more wild, I think it's fair to say Colbert might have a new "papa bear."

I thought that Colbert was GREAT, but what Jon Stewart does to CNN tonight is BETTER. I get so ticked when the news-readers at CNN stop a debate or interview smack in the middle and say" we have to stop right here"! Jon Stewart says that its a 24 hour news "show"....why do they always stop without completing what they start?

I saw Glenn Beck's show for the first time a couple of days ago (I don't watch much TV and less Fox). This guy is a joke, a clown, and incompetent. He was mugging to the camera, smirking, and slapping the plasma screen behind him when Obama appeared on it. I honestly could not make out what he was saying except when he put up a chart saying Medicare rejects more people thando private insurers. He never explained the source of that astounding claim. I assume it means that every year, some people who are not yet 65 are so desperate to leave private insurance that they apply for Medicare and lie about their age. We will never know, because Beck doesn't say.
Then I thumbed through his An Inconvenient Book at a bookstore. It should be called An Incoherent Book, right down to the cover, where a stunned-looking Beck appears to be eating a map of California for no apparent reason.
I can only assume that Beck is speaking in some kind of code that only conservatives understand.

Glenn Beck is plagiarising Colbert--minus the satire, humor, and self-mockery. And deep-fried Twinky Americans love it! Rich. Just rich.

Beck is a charlatan, easy. He's just placating to an audience that believes that he's serious or that knows he's talking nonsense and enjoys watching his stupidity. Colbert is making fun of that exact thing, and he presents the ludicrous as it is: ludicrous.

The problem is that some people can't tell the difference. They think that these men are presenting an actual point, when they are both being stupid. Only, Beck has used his platform to inspire people to believe stupid and dangerous things...like the whole conspiracy of the liberal takeover of the government.

It's paranoid and delusional and I'd at least like him to show some restraint, even if people take him seriously. It's fine for people to be dumb. It's not okay for dumb people to be encouraged to do dumb things. So long as these people are a harmless niche audience, let them wear their tin-foil hats in peace.

The funniest -- or scariest -- part is that some conservatives watch Colbert and think he's for real. I assume they are the same people who think wrestling is real, and that Obama was born in Africa.

Stephen Colbert has a copyright infringement case against Beck and Fox News.

If i were sitting on the jury and saw this clip, i would side with Colbert. This clip is pretty damning proof that Beck understood fairly recently that many so-called "conservative" Fox viewers think Colbert is for real. Beck is clearly pinching material directly from Colbert and playing it straight. And ....making millions in the process.

While it's true Stephen Colbert is parodying Bill O'Reilly's act, Colbert parody and satire is protected speech. Beck is just flat out stealing. The bits are almost word for word. It's called plagiarism.

What fun that civil trial would be.

my two little dogs shake their heads watching me go hysterical laughing and crying....
that is good satire...
07:30 AM on 10/11/2009
It's funny because it's true... that it's not... because they're both satirists.

Except it's not entirely clear to me if Beck realizes that he's a satirist. He does drop hints on occasion that imply *some* self-awareness of his satiric nature, but it's not like Colbert where he deliberately looks into the camera with that expression of incredulity.

What do you think? Is Beck self-aware, or is he merely delusional?

Beck has a number one best selling book, has exposed ACORN and Van Horn even though they will do just fine in this new world. The other guy just makes fun of whoever its most popular to make fun of.
08:40 AM on 10/11/2009
Yes, Beck is a great investigative reporter! And YOU live in an alternate universe! Are you REALLY that gullable????? Really??????
10:10 AM on 10/11/2009
I am curious as to what you mean by new world? Not disagreeing with anything in particular. It just sounds like a code word for something. What has so radically changed for you guys?

I have never watched Glenn Beck until this moment. Have only read about him. I know there are many right wingers who watch Colbert because they think he's serious. could it be...just possibly....that Glenn Beck is Colbert squared? Because that would be awesome.

I agree. Both are hilarious comediens. They both make me laugh long and hard. I love this format of comedian playing newscaster. Its better than Reality TV any day.

except glenn beck is the root of people distrusting things that are good for them, and the root of people in the administration getting fired. beck is a walking example of how dangerous it is to be unaware of your own ridiculousness, especially when others believe you.

No not unique, you are just too culturally deprived to tell the difference between the two.
