What's Your Reaction?

Via Best Week Ever comes this hilarious video of an NBC staffer running into Paula Deen's shot and then hiding behind the kitchen island so as not to ruin the segment. Of course, this didn't go off smoothly considering Paula lost her cool and asked if the man had a gun and if he was from this country. (The latter either because she feared illegal immigration or Muslim extremists.) Roker initially joked that the man didn't work at the "Today Show," but of course he does. Even weirder than Paula's reaction is the fact that the man didn't leave the show kitchen, but stayed hidden on the floor until Paula served him cake.

I am a noted channel flicker and have no interest in this ladies doings... yet I am from the south and have had to pause because my wife has (hinted) "stopstop stop she's really gooooood"... So I have seen her.. Are we supposed to be looking that hard for any hint of racism now.. i Am a liberal.... I need to know the new coda.. This lady launched into a schtik that was pretty funny considering the amateur antics of the Today show. Roker might have done a little better by going yeah that is the president of NBC or something..Dudes.. live TV.. Lighten UP!

Paula Deen is not a racist; she had Michelle Obama on her Paula's Party show during the Presidential primaries last summer and asked if she could come to come to the White House and make dinner for President Obama.
She is a admitted recovered agoraphobic as a result of an abusive relationship. I would assume that was the reaason for her fear.

Does the agoraphobic condition bring out the bottled up traaaasist attitudes in unexpected situations? It's an interesting condition.

Paula Deen has documented agoraphobia, which she has struggled to overcome over the years. Her show is generally pretty scripted, but when surprises happen, she doesn't always handle it well. I could see why she was uncertain and even shocked during this segment.

I've had a hard time feeling good about Paula since the workers at Smithfield (one of her big corporate sponsors and for whom she is a spokesperson) tried to organize. The conditions there were appalling -- just try to picture what a workplace where you slaughter 32,000 pigs a day is like. When asked about the reasons the workers were forming a union, Paula famously said: “You know, all of us in America who work we all have some complaints about our work. It's called work for a reason. It's not called play, so there will always be complaints about our workplace." That's just the musings of someone hugely out of touch and living in an ivory tower. I get that she is affable, that she makes us feel homey about our high fat diets, but i think at her core, she isn't that nice a person. And her mask slipped just a little bit at NBC.

"is he from this country." following the phrase "does he have a g.un". Is that's a xenophobic behavior? What a strange thing to say.
