I don't wish to be a downer here, but to me, that Chicken/Alien costume is disturbing. Completely age inappropriate and in the worst taste imaginable. I feel sorry for this kid.

Seeing the expression in the little chicken's eyes--I'm sure I would feel the same way if an alien escaped out of my body that way.

lol - I know. The emails floating around with cats and dogs all dressed up look a bit humiliating for the animal. But you have to admit - some of them are pretty funny!

The weirdest thing is the number of edible item costumes. It's as if Hannibal Lecter was throwing a Halloween dinner party.

Mini Colonel Sanders wins hands down!! LMAO!! Lobster baby is a close second, and the man-eating shark gets honorable mention for great creativity.

In Churchill, Manitoba, parents are reminded every year not to dress their children as either seals or polar bears for Halloween.

Seals are a polar bears favourite food, and since polar bears are drawn to the town dump and occasionally wander into town, they are an extremely bad idea for a costume.

Polar bear costumes are also a bad idea unless you want your kid shot with a tranquilizer gun and relocated by net and helicopter 100 miles away.

Hmmmm. When my son was little, there were times when "shot with a tranquilizer gun and relocated by net and helicopter 100 miles away" would have still been too close. Just kidding. He's a wonderful son.

Proud Papa Alert!!

When she was little, my daughter went trick-or-treating as a moldy old portrait, framed and hanging on a wall, complete with the requisite eyes that follow you wherever you go.

Years later, she's graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Maine College of Art. She's been creative all her life....

VERY good point.
We all make assumptions -- and sometimes what we assume says more than we might wish.
It's very difficult for anyone to completely outgrow the assumptions engendered by growing up in a highly racist society. (Yes, one that's becoming less so every day. Our kids will do better than we do. But we're not there yet.) We all have work to do -- and the ones who say that's "playing the race card" are just in denial about this obvious fact, and thus making it harder to do the work.
All the same, if we take greencowgirl's point to mean that there is not one *visibly* Black kid in the bunch, it's an accurate statement.

I think I'd go into shock if Lobster baby came to my door.
