LOS ANGELES — California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed an anti-paparazzi bill making it easier to sue media outlets that use photos that invade celebrities' privacy.

A statement issued Monday says the former "Terminator" star had signed a number of bills, including the amendment to a decade-old law that allows fines against paparazzi who illegally or offensively take photos or recordings.

The amendment permits lawsuits against media outlets that pay for and make first use of material they knew was improperly obtained.

Tabloid magazines, TV shows and Internet sites sometimes pay millions of dollars for celebrity fodder.

The amendment takes effect in January.

There should be a law against paparazzi photographing the minor children of celebrities, without their parent's consent. It's appalling that no such law exists here in America. It disgusts me the way this is allowed. It is bad enough that the privacy of adults is breeched in this way, but for an innocent child to have a camera in their face every time she or he walks out the door with their parents is a travesty.

Good law. People have a right to privacy. I'm fed up with the cr@p that appears on newsstands every week; for example, the heartless stuff about Patrick Swayze during his courageous battle with cancer. Photos of this nature are NOT newsworthy. It's just a sleazy, money making racquet.

Frankly, it should be unlawful for photos of celebrities to be published without their consent. Celebrity photos should be considered a brand (or trademark) to prevent their unauthorized use. It might give celebrities back some of the privacy all people deserve.

Celebrities use the paparazzi often to keep their names and faces front and center. This law will not change the industry.

Just when the country needs jobs they go and put paparazzi out of work. With fewer photos think about the pending layoffs in the tabloid industry.

Do you consider taking photos improperly, then selling them work?

Would it be OK if a member of the paparazzi snuck behind your bedroom drapes, took photos of whatever embarrassing thing you do when you are in the nude, and sold them to the tabloids for all to see?

Oh yes, because there's nothing more important than protecting those celebrities. Nevermind the college students who are being royally scre.wed over by his cuts to the educational budget

I've never really understood why society should pay for your education.

Society doesn't "pay for" the education of many college students, but it does subsidize the cost. Could be because society as a whole benefits from an educated populace? Maybe because that educated workforce will pay more in taxes and create less of a burden on society and the government in the future?

Worked for the POTUS.

Good. The people we envy are people, too. They have the right to be treated as though they're off stage when they're off stage. Schwarzenegger just affirmed the opt-out half that was always implied in the right to peaceably assemble. Gossips have no right to assemble un-peaceably, now it's official.

Hah. For once I agree with Ahnold. But he couldn't have signed it if the legislature hadn't passed it, so he's got relatively little to brag about.

Arnie also signed numerous other bills that effect every Californian but HP brings only this bill to light that only effects Arnie's buddies in Hollywierd. Is HP in bed with Hollywierd too?

"Affect" is a verb that means "to have an effect upon.

"Effect" is a verb that means 'to put into action.'
