Ach du lieber! Deutsche können Massachusetts nicht aussprechen. Und Danny sagt, dass sie nicht Pommes-Frites teilen. Aber sie sind wirklich der Spaß, zum mit zu trinken!

So, no one wondered why they started to say 'Karlsruhe' after a while? I'll clue you in: there's a new 'Karlruhe Institute of Technology' (http://www.kit.edu/english/index.php), a merger of the University of Karlsruhe and former Research Center Karlsruhe.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research thinks, it can rival the MIT.

Many people from Detroit mispronounce the name of their own city.
It's Day-trwaa (with the R rolled a little)

i am from the detroit area and have never heard anyone use the french pronunciation. you would most likely be met with confusion or mockery. Deh-troy-t or Dee-troyt

@Calibabe - People with poor grammar come in all races. Those who I have heard mispronounce the word, "ask" most frequently are non-black. Sorry to disappoint.

In der Tat, trockener. Ich frage mich, wie viele Amis "Streichholzschaechtelchen" richtig aussprechen könnten.

There is a big difference between "Ich bin ein Berliner" and "Ich bin Berliner".

Lucky JFK didn't make this speech in Hamburg, Frankfurt or Wien .... LOL

You're are right in your implication (if I infer correctly) that only outside of Berlin would one take "ein Berliner" for a pastry. However (if I may play along), had he delivered the speech in Frankfurt, he would have said, "Ich bin ein Frankfurter." Then still, only the Americans would have found it humorous and the Germans would, still, wonder what all the fuss is about.

I'm not likely to end the debate, but:
The guy who wrote that bit for JFK purposely contextualized it, stressing his inclusion, ie. being one of them. Therefore, the usage is not incorrect, even if generally speaking one does not use the article.

It's actually a promo for the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The idea is that it's much easier for Germans to pronounce Karlsruhe than Massachusetts. so why go there?

First heard that from Theodore Bikel, who was excellent in describing the argument of the most beautiful word in a language around a table in a gasthaus in Switzerland. Only difference was he had an Italian extolling the beauty of Falfalla instead of the Spaniard. When, he spoke of the German, it was with a heavy slap on the table, as he roared, "Und vas is wrong mit SCHMETTERLING?!"

However, I once knew a SSgt in West Germany who was refused a marriage license because the local clerk would not accept "Commonwealth" instead of State of Massachusetts.

I think "butterfly" lends itself almost as well to a Hitleresque pronunciation as "Schmetterling". It's only because one grows up with a certain word that it appears so fitting. I can whisper Schmetterling just as gently as I can butterfly.
