AP:

LOS ANGELES - The man in charge of a spiritual retreat last week in Arizona that left two people dead after they were overcome in a sweat lodge said Tuesday night he is "being tested" by the tragedy and has hired his own investigators to try to determine what went wrong.

The comments from self-help expert and author James Arthur Ray came during a seminar he held at a hotel in Marina del Rey, near Los Angeles. Ray broke down in tears as he addressed the deaths.

"This is the most difficult time I've ever faced," Ray told the crowd of about 200. "I don't know how to deal with it really."

An audience member asked Ray to describe what happened at the retreat, but he declined, saying only that he has hired his own investigative team and is cooperating with authorities.

"We're looking for answers," he said. "I'm as frustrated and confused as other people are."

Ray added that he wrestled with whether to go through with Tuesday's seminar, which he said was scheduled weeks before the sweat lodge deaths.

"My advisers told me, 'Don't do that. You don't know who'll show up. They're going to eat you alive,'" he told the audience. But he said it was important for him to keep his commitments.

"I'm grieving right now," said Ray, who received a standing ovation at the end of the seminar. "I'm grieving for the families."

Ray led a group of more than 50 people last week through a five-day program at a resort near Sedona, Ariz., intended to push people beyond their limits. The course included a Thursday sweat lodge ceremony, which ended tragically in the deaths of Kirby Brown, 38, of Westtown, N.Y., and James Shore, 40, of Milwaukee.

Nineteen other people were hurt, and one remains in critical condition.

Ray's comments followed a demand earlier Tuesday from a spokesman for Brown's family for more accountability from Ray.

Tom McFeeley, Brown's cousin and family spokesman, called on Ray to assure that the retreat's participants "were not mistreated and not put in a reckless situation.

"He was someone people believed in, people paid good money to get his advice," McFeeley said. "It's a person we all wanted to believe had our best interest in mind. Quite simply, that didn't happen."

McFeeley also said he is concerned that Ray exhibited a "godlike complex" during the event that might have kept people from opting out of activities Ray acknowledged could cause "physical, emotional, financial or other injuries."

Ray's spokesman, Howard Bragman, declined Tuesday to address McFeeley's concerns.

Fire department reports released Tuesday show the incident wasn't the first involving a sweat lodge ceremony at the resort, the Angel Valley Retreat Center. Verde Valley Fire Chief Jerry Doerksen said his department responded to a 911 call in October 2005 about a person who was unconscious after being in a sweat lodge.

Angel Valley resort owner Amayra Hamilton confirmed that Ray was leading the sweat ceremony during the 2005 event. Ray's spokesman declined to comment.

Meanwhile, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office continued to investigate last week's ceremony to determine if criminal negligence played a role in the deaths or illnesses. Sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said Tuesday that authorities have not yet spoken with Ray.

No charges have been filed.

Authorities say 55 to 65 people attending the program were crowded into the 415-square-foot, crudely built sweat lodge during a two-hour period Thursday night. Participants paid between $9,000 and $10,000 for the retreat. They were highly encouraged, but not forced, to remain inside for the entire two hours, authorities said.

The participants had fasted for 36 hours as part of a personal and spiritual quest in the wilderness, then ate a breakfast buffet before entering the sweat lodge around 3 p.m. A 911 call two hours later said two people, who authorities said were Shore and Brown, had no pulse and weren't breathing.

Autopsies on Brown and Shore were conducted, but the results are being withheld pending additional tests. Carbon monoxide poisoning was ruled out as a cause of the deaths and illnesses.

A statement released by the family of Liz Neuman, who remains in critical condition at the Flagstaff Medical Center, said she is in a coma and doctors are working to stabilize damage to multiple organs.

Two others remained hospitalized. Fire officials said the victims exhibited symptoms ranging from dehydration to kidney failure after sitting in the sweat lodge.

Officials say the sweat lodge, built specifically for the five-day retreat, lacked the necessary building permit.

Resort owners Amayra Hamilton and her husband, Michael, asked Tuesday for prayers in hopes that something positive would come out of what they said was a tragic and unexpected event.

Following Tuesday night's seminar, attendee Darren Sakurai of Los Angeles said he left with a good impression of Ray's message.

"The fact that he showed up says a lot about the man," Sakurai said.

This sounds like one of the most ridiculously reckless things I've heard of in a while. My heart goes out to all the victims. The ones who lost their lives and had their wallets lightened.

All of Mr. Ray's "Me, Me, I, Me, Me, My, I , Me....." Narcissism is an understatement. This is a test for HIM?? How about a wake up call from the universe??? You aren't God. You aren't even God-like. You aren't a guru and you don't know everything.

People wake up. No one deserves $100,000 a day to give you uber-peptalks (which you can find in any bookstore for a whole lot less, or at church for free), starve you, walk you through the woods, and make you sweat in life-threatening box full of (way too many) strangers. Of course you're going to feel renewed and rejuvenated after they "allow" you food, water and cool air again!

This is not a spiritual man with an altruistic endeavor to help mankind. He's making a half million dollars a week...with weekends off....making people delirious, so he can convince them he knows how they can make their lives better. .

Learn from your mistakes.

Listen.

Forgive.

Eat well.

Pray.

Be generous.

Find the humor.

Get / Give a hug a day

Don't be a sucker.

There you go. Just send me $3K for this condensed version of "How to Make Your Life Better", and put your other 7K back in your bank account.

James Arthur Ray is the leader of a destructive "self improvement" cult. There are a LOT of similar self help "gurus" out there and this is the way they behave. They are selfish ego maniacs. They insist on absolute obedience. They are hostile to the care and dignity of their followers. They enjoy having the power of life and death. They are almost always frauds. They are the worst examples of self improvement you could possibly find. I am so sorry for his victims. They obviously wanted nothing but the best for themselves and the world. I can only hope that Ray does some prison time and that he and his criminally abusive "workshops" are put permanently out of business.

Who made him into a Guru?

A person cannot declare gurudom!

It is the public that put them on a pedestal

He is a ordinary man.

People gurufy too many people that they look up to!

People seek to better themselves and latch onto someone that seems
to have answers that they are seeking.

People must know their limits and also not get themselves into strange
situations. In such situations things can get out of control ...peer pressure!

Why go there to start with.

And JD--I agree with you that there is NO benefit in attacking James the man- especially not knowing him or his intent. My thoughts and prayers go out to ALL concerned, including him---with hope that much can be learned from this- from Spiritual teachers, and participants. Life expanding experiences come all the time--from within- from living in the Now connected with Source, in the beauty of creation, in the interaction with others especially loved ones, through prayer, and guess what? It's absolutely free. Even in our trials we learn, and am certain James will learn from this and all is as it should be. This will be HIS life expanding experience- hopefully for the better. I was surprised authorities had not even spoken with him yet! Am guessing it has to do with his 'contract" and waiver participants sign. If it becomes class action however that goes out the window (is then the whole not the single case) And I did know he was a contributor here on HuffPo- hope that doesn't keep them from fair reporting.

James is being tested? What about the families who lost loved ones? What about the Minnesota woman who just passed away after a week in coma? He didn't even stick around to speak with authorities. Breaking AP story today from participant not very flattering to Ray. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091021/ap_on_re_us/us_sweat_lodge_deaths
I don't wish him ill will but I do believe with no permit, number of participants, and now the degree to which he said to passed out participants "let them be" do think he should be held accountable legally in wrongful death case. From a spiritual standpoint, noone should ever charge to participate in a sweatlodge. It represents the mothers womb - and if you charge to participate in cleansing within it- is same as prostitution.

The only good that may come out of this creep's greed and ambition is for seekers to learn how to detect his kind in their choice of a guide. I have some advice on that note here: [http://dailyrevolution.net/?p=7888]

He needs to be held accountable for this. It certainly doesn't sound as if he had the well-being of the participants in mind - just money.

Also, IMHO, the Native peoples should be the only ones conducting these sweat lodges, as they know the ceremonies, and sacred rituals, and are the proper ones to share their culture because it is their culture!

Sickening story, and I hope the families of these victims hold him accountable using the law.

Ray represents what is wrong with our country--we are a greed driven society. This man is hiding behind narcissistic spiritual twaddle, in my opinion, to merely deliver snake oil to totally gullible people who truly feel they have no control of their lives. What they need is a good dose of the Divine in their lives, not some false prophet who cares more about making a buck than he does about enlightenment. I met Ray a long time ago and I found him to be a con artist. And all you had to do was read the contract you had to sign before attending his workshops.

In it, there is specific language that says YOU cannot sue him for what happens to you, you basically give up all your rights (legal ones) to take action from him should anything "go wrong." I imagine that the courts are going to have fun with this because my fear is James will use that contract to truly get away with murder.

Folks like Ray, Joe Vitale, Rhonda whatever her name is, and Bill Harris at that wretched company called Holosync should all find a new religion other than money, because they have done more harm than good. But they will never admit to it because their values system lacks compassion.

Good riddence, Ray! I hope you enjoy prison, which is where you belong!

I attended a quack workshop on weight-loss through Unity Church of Dallas called Thinformation. I forked over $400 for a 36 hours weekend at a apartment clubhouse. After enduring less than one day, I could tell that it was a farce and a weird sort of cult. Turned out that Unity Church didn't realize what they were promoting. It was amazing how gullible and desperate people there were as they were repeat attenders. Most of these new age programs are nothing but scams. I filed a complaint with the Texas Attorney General and in the end, got my money back. These people are very clever as they even fooled a large church such as Unity who sponsored their program.

$400 for a 36 hour weekend sounds more than reasonable for a workshop. Maybe you got nothing out of it, but are you sure no one else did? Not every approach works for everyone. Was it a dangerous approach--was that your beef?

How weird-
Did you know that James Arthur Ray is a blogger here on HuffPo?

Read his whole bio at:

It will be interesting to see how "they" handle this story going forward, eh?

I worked for James Ray.
I was his right hand man and he taught me a lot.
Most of you have no idea what you're talking about.
He's a good man.
He made a mistake.
He will own up to it.
This is a hard...a damn hard thing to deal with.
James really wanted to help people...and now...2, possibly 3 are dead.
It's a heavy thing.
And some of you people sound so smug with your BS comments.
This guy helped hundreds of thousands of people.
I was there.
I saw what he could do first hand.
We traveled all over the USA and people really love James.
You don't know him or his background.
After a while I just had to quit.
It's not in me to do what he did.
I'm not saying that what he does is wrong...it's just grew tiresome for me.
I wanted to do stand-up.
And I did.
I was nearing semi-fame (hosting New Years eve with Bobby Lee, Pauly Shore, etc...doing the Fox News, about to have a 30 minute Comedy Central Special) but I self-sabotaged and ran from fame.
It's a damn hard thing to handle.
One day you're a barista at Starbucks and then the next you're signing contracts with networks.
You're walking a tight rope and if you fall...everyone scrutinizes you.
James Ray isn't a bad guy. He meant well.

He's a good man.
Peace to all you.
JD

JD,
Who are your elders? What native nation claims you? You can't answer and neither can James Arthur Ray. The northern plains tribes always ask these questions, they ask for family names. I can see that white people killing white people is okay. If a northern plains tribal member had killed a white person, there would be hell to pay. First by the shame on the family and the shame reflected back. Wade Crowe, relations: Sam Crow, They Drag Him, Crooked, Whirlwind in the House and Wanjica the One.

One can hope that karma will be visited upon this "good man", but alas, life itself is tragic and there isn't necessarily any redemption nor justice.
Ya, and peace to you too.

A lot of northern plains tribal nations in the past would "ban" the offender of a crime. That ban also brings shame on the offender's family name. Where are James Arthur Ray's family? How long before James is banned to prison?

From what I've read there was no permit for the structure and it was covered in VINYL that doesn't breathe!!! It's amazing more people haven't died.

As this "guru's" comments show, he's just in it for the money. Sadly, he convinced some lost souls to trust them with their lives.

Every decade or so we see a tragedy like this, but somehow people never learn. People are too eager to trust these con men.

The lawsuits out to be very interesting. Can you imagine his defense: God is testing me in the courtroom. I can't wait.

Very stupid if it was actually covered with vinyl. That's not exactly how the Indians did it.

You are NO guru if two people died and 19 were sent to a hospital. Hundreds of years aboriginals have been purifying and praying in lodges just find without death and sickness to heal their people.... and I might add to NOT make a profit.

How dare this guru charge the fees he did... the only thing he is a guru of is scam
