What's Your Reaction?

A closed-circuit video was released Friday by officials in Melbourne, Australia, showing a baby being hit by a train. When the mother temporarily let go of her baby stroller, her child rolled off the edge of the train platform just as a train was pulling into the station. The baby, strapped into the stroller, was dragged under the train for 100 feet before it came to a stop. Miraculously, the child suffered only very minor injuries. As the Times reports:

Paramedic Jon Wright said the baby received only minor injuries. "Fortunately the train was slowing as it pulled into the station. The baby received a bump to his head and was distressed when we arrived," he said.

"Luckily he was strapped into his pram at the time, which probably saved his life."

That's it, I am a firm believer that angels DO exist. Something or someone protected this child, I'm sure of it. The poor mom, my god, she will have nightmares for years after something like this, It was so fast, it could have happened to anyone. My guess, this will be the most watched over child in history after a close call like that. This poor mom will probably never take her eyes off that little one again EVER. The kid will be 18 and saying no mom, you can't come on my date with me. lol

Thank God this baby is alive!

And I don't understand some of these comments against the mother. This was an accident and it could have happened to anyone.

Good grief people! If she was so "negligent" as some of you claim then the baby wouldn't have been strapped into her stroller in the first place.

So, Balloon Boy gets the overrated attention of the press and this gets "in other news..." The child in the stroller was in actual dire peril, not a publicity stunt.

Shameful.

You might also be interested to note the contrasting attitudes and behaviour of the parents in both cases. The "balloon boy" family went on all the talk shows and milked the publicity for all it was worth. The Australian husband issued one press release that said his wife was extremely distressed as he was and they just wanted to be left alone. This was after Oprah's people contacted Victoria Police to track down the family. Last I read here, the family declined.

Next time... in the event that it might start rolling along on it's own, point the stroller (or your car for that matter ) in the direction least likely to roll directly toward the most dangerous possible situation.

No. It doesn't.

Random chance rules the universe. Sorry to disappoint.

Why would God let this happen in the first place ? just for kicks ?

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:37 AM on 10/18/2009

Nothing to do with that. A negligent mother let this happen.

Perhaps, but then again maybe she blamed herself for a split-second of distraction.

We had a case in our town last year where parents took their child and their dog for a walk, looping the hand hold of the dog's leash over the stroller handle. A loud noise spooked the dog, it took off running and the stroller was dragged several hundred feet with the baby in it . The baby's head bounced along the sidewalk while the parents ran wildly to try to catch the runaway dog/stroller. The baby was in the hospital for weeks but made a good recovery. The child who fell onto the train tracks is one very lucky little guy.

*Epic stupidity mitigated by blind luck.*

Any suggestion that the "stroller held up" is total nonsense. Falling between the tracks, upon which anything would be crushed, was the only factor.

No you are not thinking well at all, you are making an assumption without getting enough information to make it concrete. You are thinking train versus stroller... end of discussion. It's more complex than that, obviously.

That stroller is made of tubular steel. It is a wedge shape. A train at slow speed might simply push along an object of that shape, given sufficient rigidity. Considering that is what happened... you should rethink your basic premise.

I own one of those stollers and it was expensive as hell. And it's just as heavy. I can completely see how it would hold up and slide along in front.

Epically stupid post, mitigated by nothing: You think because a stroller is made of tiny steel tubes that it held back the weight of a train? Seriously, you think that?

Again, falling between the tracks was the only reason this child lived. Blind luck.

Saw this on CNN, truly amazing. Witnessed a similar incident (but not with a train) where a woman had her child strapped into a stroller, pushed the front wheels of the stroller off a steep curb, was not paying attention and continued pushing, flipping the stroller straight over itself with the hand grips hitting the pavement on the other side, child face down on the street. At my angle I could see clearly the child flipping over, heading straight to the ground, but because they were strapped in with the harness-like straps didn't touch the ground, just arms flailing. Woman was horribly upset, but the child was unscathed.

The baby's survival is a testament to the government regulations which makes those strollers and car seats so sturdy and safe. Credit where credit is due: thank you, nanny state!

I know the stroller itself didn't save that baby. Still, I want one exactly like it (just in case).

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:18 PM on 10/17/2009

The Stroller Brand is Phil & Ted's.

We own one. They are expensive as heck... but they have zero plastic. Nor are they aluminum. They are steel. And heavy.

The stroller certainly did play a role in saving the kids life. They are *very* strong strollers.

How do you figure, considering that the stroller frame was likely pushed away, while the train, itself, provided a high enough threshold from ground to suspension that it was simply able to glide right over the baby?

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:27 PM on 10/17/2009

Im sure it was a mixture of luck and having a tubular steel frame around him. Those Phil & Ted strollers are no-plastic no-aluminum heavy duty steel affairs.
