Jessica Watson

SYDNEY — A 16-year-old Australian steered her bright pink yacht out of Sydney Harbor on Sunday to start her bid to become the youngest person to sail solo and unassisted around the world.

Jessica Watson's plan to make a 23,600-mile (38,000-kilometer) journey through some of the world's most treacherous waters sparked a debate in Australia about whether someone so young should be allowed to try such a potentially dangerous feat.

Watson and her family insist she is an experienced and capable sailor who has studied navigation, electronics and maritime safety procedures. Although she will sail solo and unassisted, she will be in constant contact with her support team via radio, e-mail and a blog.

The teenager did not speak with reporters before she left, and it was her mom who first updated the Internet diary Sunday.

"I know you are all anxious to hear from Jess, but she's a little preoccupied on her first day, so she asked me to post a quick note to let everyone know that the departure went well this morning," Julie Watson wrote on the blog.

"I would like to sincerely thank all those wonderful people who came out on the harbor this morning and down to the marina to wish Jess well," she posted only hours after giving her daughter a tearful hug and saying goodbye.

Watson sailed her pink, 34-foot (10-meter) yacht out of Sydney under gray skies and slightly choppy conditions. She smiled and waved to scores of well-wishers on land and in boats that had gathered on the harbor.

"I think a lot of Australians are nervous for Jessica. I'm nervous for her," Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard told Nine Network television. "But my words at this stage, given that she's determined to go, would be to wish her the best of luck and to urge her to keep safe."

Watson's plans suffered several setbacks before she finally left. Last month, her yacht collided with a cargo ship as she sailed toward Sydney to make final preparations – an accident that triggered some calls for her to abandon the attempt.

More recently, strong winds in Sydney delayed her planned departure last week.

The first leg of Watson's journey will take her past northern New Zealand, then Fiji and Samoa. In a trip expected to last about eight months, she plans to pass around the southern tips of Africa and South America.

Andrew Fraser, a spokesman for Watson's team, said she was relieved and upbeat to be getting under way. He dodged questions about whether the trip was too dangerous for someone so young.

"Let's have this conversation in eight months," he told reporters.

Briton Mike Perham, 17, in August laid claim to being the youngest solo round-the-world sailor after completing a 28,000-mile (45,000-kilometer) trip in nine months, though he stopped for repairs, which counts as an "assisted" trip.

Perham is a few months younger than Zac Sunderland, from Thousand Oaks, California, who claimed the youngest solo crown in July when he completed a similar trip in 13 months, though Sunderland's trip was also in the "assisted" category.

"Without assistance" means a vessel may not receive any kind of outside help or take on board any supplies, materials or equipment during the attempt. A craft may be anchored or beached during the attempt, but any repairs must be made without outside resources, materials or help.

The unassisted mark is held by another Australian, Jesse Martin, who was 18 when he completed the journey in 1999.

Earlier this year, a Dutch court ordered 13-year-old Laura Dekker to be placed in the custody of child care authorities while her parents argue over whether she should be allowed to try to become the youngest sailor to circle the globe.

OMG that poor girl. She has NO idea what is in store for her!!! Her little pink boat is going to end up at the bottom of the ocean if she continues on. The ocean is no place for an inexperienced sailor, alone, in a miniscule boat. Her parents need to dispatch the authorities and have her tracked down and brought back to land, NOW, before she hits her first big storm. I pray that they come to their senses and do the right thing and get their daughter back home before the inevitable happens!!!

Audie Murphy joined the u.s. military at age 16, and in the next two years won the Medal of Honor for gallantry in action and 32 other awards becoming America's most decorated soldier. He was wounded 3 times. He finally died piloting a small plane at age 44..

He was 5' 5" and 111 pounds.

There appear to be some Aussies here attacking Americans for our reasonable concern. Perhaps living 21 million to a continent has made you folks complacent, but sending a 16 yr old girl to spend a year on the ocean alone is down right irresponsible. America looses more 16 year old girls than Australia graduates, so Americans are far more aware of risks that revolve around them.

This is not really about a lack of concern.. most Aussies are concerned for her safety. Indeed, some Aussies are so concerned they believe the state should have intervened and prevented this from happening at all. I would like to think that most Americans would favor personal freedom over state control, even in a case as border-line as this one. Her parents, sponsors, and pretty much anyone else who knows her, believes she is mature enough to take this on.
Risks are everywhere for young people, and young girls in particular. A 16 year old could be attacked at a party, or be killed in a car crash with a bunch of friends driving too fast. Those kinds of ends to young lives are unfortunately so commonplace, they just barely make the headlines.
You have to minimise the risks, which I believe Jessica and her team have done, but you can't allow fear to be your master.

You know she can go through the Straits of Magellan and not have to risk Cape Horn?

Sure, but the winds howl in the region, so if she can make it through there, and miss other boats, she'll be scot free.

Good luck to her. I didn't have a bit of her ambition when I was her age. I was mooching money off my parents to buy fast food after school.

So this is the same 16 yr old girl that hit a 3 TON CARGO SHIP a few hours into her trip last time? Seriously? I know we dont want to perpetuate negative stereotypes on how woman cant navigate, but come on, it wasnt exactly a small object in the ocean, it was a freakin cargo ship!

It takes two to tango. Having sailed the Pacific several times, I know it just takes 20 minutes from the horizon to be clear to being faced with a ship. If you take a short nap, grab a bite to eat, or the ship even comes over to check you out, you could be in trouble. The cargo ship has a much larger crew and is required to maintain watch as well. Stuff happens.

Where did you get the "3 ton" from?
If it truely was only 3 tons...then it was a small boat she collided with.

I live on the Westen Australian coast near the port city of Fremantle. We have had many sea rescues down here in the Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean. Most of the rescues were of experienced seapersons who have gotten into strife. It is a very dangerous mission that is undertaken by the Austalian Navy-and expensive. I only hope, if Jessica gets into trouble it will be in Australian waters because we have experienced rescue crew. She is trying to break the record of Jesse Martin, an Australian who successfully navigated the globe at age18. And there was a local guy a few months older who did it first. She is the youngest female. Her parents should be worried every step of the way and prepare for the worst. It doesn't matter how experienced she is or how Immortal she's feeling which is the common trait of 16 year olds, the ocean is an unknown pit of hell and anything can happen. My biggest worry is, if she encounters other boats out there, as a young girl she is fair game out on the high seas. The only thing that will get her home will be pure luck, her experience and ego won't.

Uh hello. the possiblity that she might kill herself and others is a legitimate concern given her age , inexperience and the difficult task at hand. not to mention that she already ran into a 3 ton cargo ship the last time she tried this publicity stunt.

i think YOUR pretentious tone is what's Unbelievable.

Parents = FAIL!

16yo children do not have the necessary brainpower let alone physical strength and stamina to even attempt something so dangerous and unpredictable. And what about pirates????

Parents = FAIL!!

Tell that to Joan of Arc who was 16 when she began to defeat armies.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:58 AM on 10/19/2009

Joan of Arc had a whole army backing her up. Jessica Watson is sailing alone at sea. Please provide a more appropriate comparison.

We were all teenagers, once and everyone has the right to speak from experience, but I am offended by the politically-correct-self-appointed-spoke-persons-for-teenagers -- who like to play the good cop --, and woe betide anyone who should not praise but speak ill of the “little people”.

I wonder how many 16year are capable of concentrating on any one given repetitive task for more than a few months. A few days on the vessel and she will get bored and feel “imprisoned”; and lets then hear the two-way communication between her and her parents, then we will know whose idea it was in the first place.

Education is compulsory until age 15 or 16 depending on the State of residence.

An unnecessary recipe for disaster...

It seems that the attention-seeking parent syndrome has spread from state-side to the Antipodes!!
This is a disater in the making, but I guess the media coverage, come what may , is worth it!
Parents, YOU PAY total for the rescue costs!!!

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:25 AM on 10/19/2009

I wonder if she really has any idea of what she is getting herself into? Of course, the parents denies that they are exerting any pressure on her but I am sure behind close doors, it is all nudge-nudge, wink-wink, “we have [paid for the lessons] you need, and [bought the clothes and equipments]; we love you, and we are 100% behind you, but it is your decision” Ha! Some parents are like sheep dogs in their handling of kids.
