The Rock Obama

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson made a special guest appearance on "Saturday Night Live" this week to reprise his role as "The Rock Obama." This was by far the most Obama-sympathetic opener of the season, as it detailed the problems he inherited when he took office and mocked the cast of characters lined up against health care reform.

In the past weeks SNL's writers have used their cold open to criticize the president for not fulfilling his campaign promises and mock his Nobel Prize win. But this sketch addressed the opposition the president faces to his agenda both from Republicans and more conservative members of his own party.

"Maybe I can explain the Republican position. It's not that we want health care to fail, we just want you to fail. Stopping health care reform seems like the best way to do that," said Will Forte playing Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. This made the president transform into his super hero self and rip off McConnell's arm.

Only thing funnier would be for Obama to honor his campaign promise and have CSPAN televise the dems closed door meetings.

I'd give an arm and a leg to see some of the Senators have that done to them. The only thing wrong with the skit is that McConnell couldn't get himself treated as an arm ripped off is probably considered a pre-existing condition.

I can't wait for CNN to do a fact check of this week's sketch.

They'll interview McConnell for a half hour trying to determine whether his arm was indeed ripped off by an enraged and transformed president.

SNL never saw a black man (or even a kinda-non-white man: Fred Armisen) who didn't remind them, in some way, of Obama. It's really a cozy, homogeneous little party over there @SNL...

I hope Obama was watching, maybe cracking some heads in the Senate and Congress is the way to go regarding Health Care reform.

I read a lot of people saying that S & L was funnier before when they had this person or that person. I have news for you: S & L was never funny. We only remember the one or two funny skits per show, from actors we recognize and got to know. Back when Will Ferrell was new, people were saying that it was so much better when John Lovitz and Dennis Miller were on. Years from now, people will say that S & L was good when the current cast of new people (that people aren't comfortable with) were on. It goes on and on. Bottom line though, the show always has had 90% unfunny skits, even when the best actors were on.

Since you're unsure of the show's name, I'm unsure how much attention to give your observations.

Typical....another Republican trying to sell us on the Savings & Loan bubble.

That's what S & L means right?

I don't remember anything, ever, funny about S&L. SNL, on the other hand, is often funny. It is social commentary, though, and geared towards a specific audience. If you aren't in that target audience, much of the humor is lost.

SNL has always been an hour of comedy crammed into a 90 minute show.

Of course you don't laugh at SNL. It is because of what you are that you are who you are. Republicans and conservatives have no sense of humor because they are constantly afraid of a constantly changing world. Because of this fear they cling to all toe holds to the past. If you look at who is who in Hollywood or Rock and Roll you will see that the great majority are Democrats and liberals. Of course Re-cons are threatened by these people and they feel great disdain for them. Here is another example of this paradigm. Republicans are usually ugly and socially challenged. Perhaps their sour minds make them ugly or maybe or possibly being left out of the mainsteam by their ugly appearances sours their minds. A study once found that criminals of the worst sort usually have a physical deformity of some kind that embitters them. The study found that plastic surgery can change these people into law abiding citizen. When they are improved by surgery they stop feeling that sense of rejection and self loathing and their attitudes change. They consider themselves normal at this point and they join the great human party of the beautiful. No longer are they driven mad by their resentment of people who recoil in horror when in their presence.

SNL use to be funny but not so much lately. Like to see you make fun of Glen Beck and fox news. Do some skits on the crazy teabaggers or Michael Steel and his comment about republicans being cows and standing in front of the democratic healthcare train. There is so much potential for some really funny stuff.

This could have been an interesting premise with the angered "The Rock" Obama emerging like "The Hulk." But alas, the SNL skit and "the Rock's" impersonation b*mbed, big time. I almost turned it off immediately, because I thought it was a repeat of the previous unfunny skit. Then I noticed that the characters being ejected from the window were different so I hung in. But this skit was worse than the first one (if that's possible). So, I only wished I had turned it off by the time he mercifully decried, "Live from New York . . . "

Oh well. At this rate, I don't suppose SNL will be affecting (or effecting) any political outcomes, any time soon.

Shoot, I tuned in, thought it was a repat and turned it off. Did I hear Dwayne Johnson was a Republican? Does the big O get his most sympathetic portrayals by the few decent conservatives left?

SNL so far this season has been terrible. How I miss the great impressionists such as Darrell Hammond, Will Farrell, and Tina Fey.The current cast are very poor at parody and the writers are atrocious. Not funny. If this poor quality continues, I doubt I will watch anymore, and I have been watching since the 70s.

Yeah. I wish we'd see some real "The Rock Obama".

That guy ,the Rock must have the best agent in the world. For years they've been getting him work as a comedic actor. Meanwhile, he can't act and he isn't funny.

You might want to work on finding that agent. It might do wonders for you "career." ;)

Frankly, the Rock did quite well his first time on SNL. Some of his other movie roles weren't that well written, but he still has a very energetic presence on screen or in the ring.

Not a bad idea, though acting isn't my "career." It's something I've done as a sideline. Actually, acting doesn't require skill like painting or playing an instrument. Great roles are usually the result of a good director and a good script. Acting is having a presence. And I maintain, The Rock is a bit of stiff. But hey, if you like him... Some people are fascinated by professional wrestling too. Go figure.
