WASHINGTON — European astronomers have found 32 new planets outside our solar system, adding evidence to the theory that the universe has many places where life could develop. Scientists using the European Southern Observatory telescope didn't find any planets quite the size of Earth or any that seemed habitable or even unusual. But their announcement increased the number of planets discovered outside the solar system to more than 400.

Six of the newly found planets are several times bigger than Earth, increasing the population of so-called super-Earths by more than 30 percent. Most planets discovered so far are far bigger, Jupiter-sized or even larger.

Two of the newly discovered planets were as small as five times the size of Earth and one was up to five times larger than Jupiter.

Astronomer Stephane Udry of the University of Geneva said the results support the theory that planet formation is common, especially around the most common types of stars.

"I'm pretty confident that there are Earth-like planets everywhere," Udry said in a Web-based news briefing from a conference in Portugal. "Nature doesn't like a vacuum. If there is space to put a planet there, there will be a planet there."

What astronomers said is especially exciting is that about 40 percent of sun-like stars have planets that are closer to being Earth-sized than the size of Jupiter. Jupiter's mass is more than 300 times that of Earth's.

Depending on definitions of the size of super-Earths, the discovery suggests that planets that have a mass similar to Earth's are "extraordinarily commonplace," said Alan Boss, an astronomer at the Carnegie Institution of Washington. He was not part of the European team. "The universe must indeed be crowded with habitable worlds."

Boss said finding 32 planets at once is a record "and it really shows that the Europeans have taken the lead" in finding planets outside the solar system.

The discoveries were made by the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher, which is an attachment to the European observatory telescope in Chile that looks for slight wobbles in a star's movements. Those changes would be made by the tug of a planet's gravity on the star. There are no photos of these planets.

Shhhhh, be quiet. The Church will be coming for you for writing this heresy! There's no one else out there you know. (sarcasm dripping).

is it true, time travel is just going really fast, faster than the speed of light? I thought it only requires a scientist inventing a wheelchair looking device with dials, when activated the world start changing before my eyes.

Albert Einstein famously said "If you cannot explain any idea to an intelligent eight-year-old, you do not really understand the idea yourself".

Einstein, himself, is the one who gives the example of someone standing and watching a high-speed train go by. If a person on the train is lifting a cup to their mouth, the person at the side of the track might not notice any movement at all, but to the person on the train.... they are just moving at a normal rate. That person standing at the side might only see a glimpse of a person stopped in motion. Einstein says it's that simple.

According to Einstein's theory of the speed of light, it should only be possible to move forward in time.

Darn, i wanted to go back in time and buy one of the young Hitler's nice little water colors and save us all a lot of grief.

You are wrong about Einstein. In fact one of the most troubling aspects of his theory is that there is that everything seems to work perfectly whether time moves backwards or forwards so the fact that to us time only seems to go in one direction seems a problem.

I think you are also wrong about Hitler. The idea that Hitler was the thing that caused the holocaust is convenient for people who don't like to think and want to blame evil on a few "evil doers". Hitler was an egomaniacal soceopath but he didn't create the Nazis, the Nazis created him. There were all kinds of historical forces at work if it hadn't been Hitler it would have been Goebels or Goering or someone else.

Why do we have to be subjected to stu.pid as.s tweets like this:

"christybella: 32 NEW Planets in Our Solar System-Are you Kidding me???"

Why do people still can't grasp that there are other beings and life forms similar to us, that inhabit those planets in those solar systems? I believe those planet are inhabit, by a life form, more than a divine one in the sky. " I Want To Believe"

Spores travel through the vacuum of space and land, some on rock and barren planets, but some on fertile planets where herbivores eat them and then excrete the perfect little cow pie which makes a nice home for the space traveler. A loading dose of psilocybin always produces the same message, "Hello! We are here! Where are you? Greetings."

It is human-centric to think messages will come on radio waves. But, Dude Coinyer, you know all this.

Well, the day they finally find Zarkon, it will be a boon for space exploration. The feds will demand spacecraft that can travel there, so they can bust the inhabitants.

Thought for the Day:

Let's HOPE that the ALIENS are DUMBER than we are!

Otherwise we are SCREWED.

In spite of my vested interest (by virtue of being human) in human superiority within the galaxy, I don't quite have the heart to wish a stupider intelligent species on the galaxy. We have our beautiful moments, and our brilliant moments, but I'd like to think other intelligent species would have moved past the barbarism that we so often find ourselves caught up in.

I believe there are other planets that have beings alive and doing well just like our planet. It would be too egotistical to think we are the only ones in this entire universe. Nasa bombing the moon to check and see if it contains water is a waste of time. That planet is dead and they need to move on. The work that these people are doing is much more exciting and at least worth spending money on.

But, but....what about Jaasus? I thought we were created in his image and we were the only ones in the universe? I just get happy with my beliefs and science comes along and screws things up again.

So that is where we will colonize the descendants of this penal colony, to colonize and build a safe place for RepubliKKKants to get away from Democrats and criminals. I think the RepubliKKKants call it "Heaven."

Yes, but shortly after arriving, they will begin to eat their own.

Because it's the only way they know how to live.

I love HuffPo headlines!

then you read the article -

Hilarious :)

Yer reading comprehension is lacking. I am sure the headline was reflective of the 40% estimate of 'earth-sized' planets,of the 400+ planets discovered, thus far, that was clearly in the article......,

just sayin'.....,

If an alien species exists outside our solar system and we are not there to see it, does it actually exist?
