Louis Farrakhan

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Minister Louis Farrakhan on Sunday urged his followers not to become complacent by President Barack Obama's election and to work to repair communities.

The 76-year-old Nation of Islam leader said in a speech commemorating the 14th anniversary of the Million Man March that people shouldn't become pacified by the election of the first black president.

"This can pacify you and lull you to sleep in a dangerous time, making you think that we live in a post-racial America – when the opposite is true," he said to loud applause.

The Chicago-based Nation of Islam has embraced black nationalism since its founding in the 1930s, and has used Obama's election as a launching point for celebration, intellectual discussion and a call to action.

"You may not be pleased with everything he's saying and doing, but you have to understand that he's been voted in to take care of the affairs of a nation, and not yours and mine particularly," Farrakhan said. "He's the American president, not the black president."

Given those broad responsibilities, African-Americans need to "accept responsibility to build our own communities," Farrakhan said.

Farrakhan has recently had a strong presence at events addressing a rise in youth violence. He has said the death of Derrion Albert, a Chicago high school honor student fatally beaten by other teens in an attack captured on video, should be a call to action.

Sunday's speech was billed as a plan to focus on reducing crime. Farrakhan didn't lay out details in his 2 1/2-hour address, but said members of the Nation of Islam have shown a blueprint for helping people repair their lives. The organization has long focused efforts on recruiting in prisons by encouraging inmates to study the movement's teachings.

"They're going to prisons and they make a man and a woman whole, the prostitute gets cleaned up, the drug addict gets changed," he said. "You see a model in Muslims in the Nation of Islam when our people come into the mosque toxic and then are made useful."

Farrakhan said the theme of repairing communities will become the basis of a series of future lectures. The leader regularly speaks at the movement's headquarters, Mosque Maryam. The lectures are widely distributed throughout the movement.

Farrakhan was joined on stage by recently resigned Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton, who has announced a Democratic primary challenge to U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, a white congressman who has represented the mostly black House district for two terms.

In comments to the crowd before the speech, Herenton recalled presenting Farrakhan with a key to the city despite the controversy it caused.

"It was easy for me as a mayor to present a key ... to a man who is worthy, to a man who speaks truth, to a man who possesses wisdom, to a man who is courageous in thought and in action," said Herenton, who was the first elected black mayor of Memphis. "To an anointed man."

The death of Malcolm X was something that Minister Farrakhan
has addressed with his people and black people as a whole
when he said that he regretted the climiate that he had helped
create that would have caused his death....he asked to be
forgiven...

when I heard his words and sincerity I forgave him.....

I believe at this point of Black History it's not worth discussing
it can't be changed and minsiter Farrakhan has atoned for
creating a climate that would produce his murder...

lets move on.....

Minister Louis Farrakhan is an example of a strong Black man who will not take anything from the white establishment. More AA men need to follow his lead.

Yea well, while this strong black man sits in Chicago playing messiah, another one of us young black men kills the other. Where is Farrakhan besides making speeches somewhere?

My point exactly. If the young men killing each other would follow the Minister the killing would STOP. There is a reason why many whites hate the Minister. He has always preaached self reliance etc.

Brother, you do not know the great work this man has done in redeeming many of our people who were in a state of condition of death. You do not know the good that Farrakhan has done for the Derrion Albert family, and honestly it is not my place to discuss those details with you. In the bible, the word is considered power and high above all things...therefore do not degrade the effect and power of a word spoken by a man. Rather than speak against a man who is doing good, why don't you become an instrument that God can use to raise our people and all people from their condition, or recognize one and help him to do so.

I wonder why this man who has made amazingly anti-semitic, homophobic, racist, sexist comments is getting any press. Just to stir it up? Or do people actually follow this self avowed bigot?

when you as a person have been marginalized
by the main stream and made to feel worthless
then you have a man who teaches you to be
proud of yourself, and to improve yourself through
education, and self reliance, and then you see
the fruit of his message, former crminals and
people who lost their way, everyday conducting
themselves in a proud respectful way, that message
will resonate through a community....

right, wrong or indifferent the fruit of Ministers
Farrakhan's work is seen everyday through out the
black community!

You said that the "fruit of Minister Farrakhan's work is seen everyday through out the
black community!"

Could you elaborate and be more specific.

The AP (responsible for this story) is only reporting on the elderly Farrakhan to scare some white people--otherwise, those Republicans would have no interest in running a story on him..What's the matter, AP editors, Rev. Jeremiah Wright wasn't up to anything interesting?

Idiots.

I may not agree with all of his rhetoric, but the minister and the NOI have done alot to help change the community and lives of Black Americans.

Good for Huff finally posting something regarding Minister Farrakhan, a wise and decent man. He is been the poster child for smears by members of the right and the left when politically advantageous to apeal to race politics. Glad he's back and continuing to promote self reliance and self responsibility.
Also, it's good to see so many thoughful and articulate comments.

He's also made terrible anti-gay, anti-jew, anti-white statements that's neither wise nor decent. On one hand he does good on the other he spreads hate.

It is time out time for Louis.
We do not need comments like this now, there are more serious things that need to be addressed.

1. "We don't need comments like" what exactly?? What comment did you find offensive??

2. We have several important issues to tend to, one of them being the state of African Americans -- our youngsters, in particular. Why should the Af. Am. community put that on hold??

obviously louis don't meet all tastes, not by long shot but don't shoot the message!

Being proactive in this nation is a call-out to all. the wingnuts included, they need to participate.

As a former resident of North Philadelphia and high school teacher, I am ambivalent towards the Nation but overall supportive of Islam in poor black communities. Islam: 1) forbids drinking and drug use, 2) demands rigorous scriptural study and hermeneutics (i.e. LITERACY) 3) deters teenage pregnancy and sexual activity in young women before marriage in the most effective way I know of... brutal filial violence. -- that last part sounds a tad harsh, but as a teacher, my Sunni female students invariably exhibited the best behavior, had the longest attention spans and complex textual analytic skills, they also were not engaging in heavy petting in the stairwells or getting pregnant. All the young men inside and outside knew what the consequences were. If you want a formula to reproduce ghettoized consciousness and existential universes, then by all means do nothing culturally to fight functional illiteracy, teenage pregnancy illegitimacy, drug/alchohol abuse, and general nihilism/fatalism. Islam has the best cultural tool-box to fix all of these issues. More so than any sect of Christianity I can think of.

The 3 points you made about the NOI is actually beliefs in most evangelical groups. Whom people on this blog always insult. You know yourself the mormons have similar beliefs and practices. Yet, folks like you are always making fun of them.Right?

The NOI embraces Blacks. Evangelicals and Mormons do NOT embrace Blacks, unless they are Black themselves.

As I understand, Utah clinics/hospitals are overwhelmed with rectal surgery and disinfection treatments due to Mormon teenage girls wanting to preserve their physiological virginity, participating instead in anal and oral sex. I would not be surprised if Evangelical teenage girls have not also discovered such loopholes. Of course avoiding pregnancy at a financially and existentially unprepared age is the ultimate goal... I believe it would be more difficult to fine-print a Sunni father or uncle or older brother, of whose duty it is to protect the dignity of an unmarried young woman, on the technical nuances of virginity/sexual innocence.

Also what is a "folk[s] like me" ?? I probably should say at this point that I am a white atheist communitarian that grew up in an El Salvadoran part of DC. Do I have a "folk"?

Why is it that many good and decent people can't wrap their minds around the idea that Blacks did not like being treated badly by their country for all those years? Slavery, Jim Crow, etc, were not walks in the park. People died, familes broken up, property was stolen, rights stripped away. Anger would seem to be a normal reaction. That we still sought to be contributors to this nation speaks to a patriotism that should be admired.

Juxtapose that with the Afterbirther crowd who are angry at what they think may happen...

This also need to be a reminder to continue voting. Yes, an African-American was elected President. Yay. The push to claim some actual equality in this country won't be based on whether or not you voted once (or twice) for Barack Obama, though. There's still more to do than that. Minorities will need to continue to vote, for other representatives, at all levels of government. Get involved. Stay involved. Vote. That's what will make the difference. It's all in the numbers.

Little will change for blacks until they decide to take back their neighborhoods and individual control of their lives. I dearly love Obama but I'm not expecting him or ANY president or the government to guarantee the outcome of my life. No government on this planet, however well-intentioned, can do that. I never worry a great deal about whether an elected official is "liberal" or "conservative," as long as he or she does not place any stumbling blocks in my path.
