THANK YOU gorgol.
Considering that for the all the years these people have been imprisoned, the U.S. has not seen fit to give them the due process that would included legal representation and an actual trial, no wonder so many are afraid that they would be angry when they are finally released.
Fear of what unjustly imprisoned and tortured people might do to those who stood by and let it happen, even if they were not directly involved is, I think, at the root of much of the reluctance to settle their guilt or innocence once and for all.
Failing that, since many cannot be tried because torture was used to get confessions, take them to wherever they will be safe and finally let them go.
As for whether or not they will re-join in war against the U.S., they have plenty to be pissed off about. My guess is that for most of them, having missed YEARS with their families and childredn, who are now YEARS older since they last saw them, they will want to forget their less than pleasant American experience, that is, if they possibly can.

The "civilians" that we paid for, should be sent home or wherever they want to go with 100k$ for their trouble.

There might be some that are physically and/or mentally disabled from being exposed to extreme interrogation techniques for extended periods of time. They will require medical care.

So you're saying they should stay in Gitmo for treatment?

I can't believe Congress is standing in the way of emptying Guantanamo. Just do it for goodness sake. If Admiral Copeman says he can have GITMO emptied then do it! There are so many places the detainees can be housed in the US. We've got terrorr!sts already in prisons on US soil. What are people so afraid of? Most of these detainees haven't been charged with any crime.

Believe it, yes, the Dems in Congress are standing in the way. I think they would fit into a US prison really well. May I suggest housing them in a cellblock full of Aryan Nation members?

So we've got 200, more or less, that have detained for far too long with no reason that we care to divulge and can't figure out what to do with them?

Let them decide where they want to go and pay for the ticket! The longer we hold them the more we hurt ourselves!

While we illegally keep them imprisoned they are a rallying call for the most extremist actions against us.

Heck, I can do one better than the Admiral. Take a day to put them on a ship, a day at sea, and about 30 minutes to walk the plank. /s

You are right of course. How stupid of us. We should attack our own country's leaders and send these misunderstood folks back to your neighborhood.

We really do need to get shut down!
Once we get friendly with Cuba again it will be a great site for a new Casino.

I think Castro (the communist dictator of Cuba) confiscated all the casinos.

The American people have spent an awful lot of money clearing out a ranch in Crawford Texas.

Let's send them all there and close Gitmo.

Interesting idea, except that Texas has murdered more people under perry than bush, and I'd not want to feed in to that state's blood thirst.

I say this pure jest. I just hope in the clearing stuff, the Admiral ain't talkin' 'bout takin' 'em out back and wackin' 'em. If they was to all have a terminal case of living and all suddenly died it'd clean the place out in a hurry. They wouldn't need no stinkin' aerioplanes. Only joking

Kind of reminds me of one of those California style high-speed police pursuits. You know, the 19-year old who inadvertently ran a stop sign and decided to high-tail it for 3 1/2 hours of "catch me if you can" spirit.

"WHAM!" out comes the 67 squad cars, 14 high-speed pursuit cars, 8 police helicopters (not to mention the untold number of sheriff and state vehicles involved).

Notice that the military discovered the importance of a semiautomatic weapon versus a bolt action. Experience counts.

It is a military base on the tip of Cuba. Gee, why would they need a military presence?

Tell Congress to Close Gitmo Now. (see links promoting the effort above the article in orange)

Sign the Petition. Use your zip code and it will automatically send e-mails to your Representatives and Senators from your State.

You don't tell Congress to do something. You get a lobbyist to pay them to do it.

Send them back to the country from which they were captured. Problem solved.

For some of them, niether they nor their home country want that - and we (actually, some liberals) would feel kind of guilty if they got executed the minute they stepped off the plane. Also, some of the released detainees have gone back to killing Americans, so especially as there is still a war on, that doesn't seem like a good move.

I don't remember the exact line but it was in A Few Good Men when the colonel said something to the effect that there will always be the soft, weak people who would open the doors to the dangerous people in our world. They have always existed and always will. But there will be those who choose to stand guard and watch over us and protect us from those who would harm us.

People like you will always be safe. You can thank the military for keeping you that way. God knows these detainees wouldn't.
