Genetics

inc.com:

If you made your first sale while still in diapers and your lemonade stand was a substantial contributor to the family income, you've likely been called a born entrepreneur. But just how heritable is the ability to work hard, take risks, and seize opportunities? According to research conducted at the Department of Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology at Kings College in London, 37 percent to 48 percent of the tendency to be an entrepreneur is genetic.

This is ridiculous. So being catholic is genetic and it has nothing to do with being in the proximity of the Pope.Becoming a surfer has nothing to do with growing up in a home on the beach.I remember reading about these identical twins adopted and separated at birth. One became a famous engineer setting records with the number of patents at Bell Labs. His brother was a custodian at a hi-riser in New York.It all about environment saying it anything else is pure speculation. And physical abilities has a lot to do with exceling in cerrtain endeavors.

I would like to see their actual data, regression models, and the list of confounders for which they controlled. Most importantly I would like to know how they showed/defined that the "tendency is genetic" and to see the size of their population. Their 37-48% is utterly meaningless if their sample size is 22 people.

This is the probability of a coin toss, as someone astutely remarked above, there are only 2 choices (your parent(s) either were or were not entrepreneurs, you will either be or not be an entrepreneur).

This is exciting! I can believe this. Some people have a worker bee mentality and can get up and punch a clock every day for 30 years no problem. For others this would be torture. You have to think a lot different to be self motivating and set out each day on a undescribed path pursuing a vision of your own imagination. Then convince others that you can achieve it and to motivate them to help you achieve it. Not to mention funding your vision. It would be nice to introduce targeted education into the system. Learning as...one size fits all is so prehistoric. We have not come close to tapping into our full educational potential.

Who is the real worker Bee here ? Those who go home and have a life outside of work or those who spend 30 years working 18 hour days failing several times over 10 years before getting any success?

Then when you realize some success you must rush to make all they can before the competition moves in and knocks down the profit margin. Finally after 20 years of hard back breaking mind numbing work to keep every dollar of profit your old usually divored and sick.

Some want to enjoy life not work themselves to death for money.

When laws are passed that prevent you from competiting in even small niche areas along side big corporations why would anyone risk all their equity and funds in a fixed game ?

Worker bee meaning helping someone else achieve their goals instead of venturing off on your own objectives. No insult intended.

"According to research conducted at the Department of Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology at Kings College in London, 37 percent to 48 percent of the tendency to be an entrepreneur is genetic."

The second number, 48%, must be more correct. That would be about 50%--the odds of calling heads for a coin toss.

Well, even if we assume that 'the ability to work hard, take risks, and seize opportunities' is heritable, we haven't quite arrived on the finishing line just yet.

Because all this would prove at best would be that the potential for a self-actualizing personality may be heritable.

It's always funny to see how people claim to make difficult things simpler by claiming to answer even more difficult questions about them - without any clarification of the basics.

I didn't read the paper, but since when is there a consensus view on what 'entrepreneurship' is?

Furthermore, if the offspring of entrepreneurs is again found in entrepreneurial jobs, wouldn't that be explained by that invention called 'inheritance' - a slight variation on the theme of 'heritability'.

Ah genetic, you say? And they say certain race is superior.
Yes the rich is rich because it's in their DNA.
Please stop me before I fall off my seat from uncontrollable laughter.
