NEW YORK - Rihanna (ree-AH'-nah) is exposing her fans to more than her music with her new single, "Russian Roulette."

The singer is featured nearly topless on artwork for the song, covered only by what looks to be barbed wire.

The photo fits the apparent theme for her new album, "Rated R," which is due out Nov. 23. It will be her first CD since 2007's "Good Girl Gone Bad," which went multiplatinum. It will also be her first solo single since she was attacked by ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.

"Russian Roulette" will debut Tuesday on Rihanna's Web site.

Being a surveyor in AZ I tangled with a great deal of barbed wire. You could wrap someone in it without hurting them, if you're careful. It's just a bit stiff, though, and that could be a problem, like getting it to wrap around the breasts and not kink. If you heated the wire to get rid of any tempering it would get much softer or if you made it from copper wire... maybe I'm getting too technical for this thread.

People who like her 'music' do not actually 'get' music. Pap for teenage girls.

Pop music is music. It takes real talent to write and produce a hit pop song. Not that it's my favorite genre but let's be real.

Pfffft...plastic barbed wire. PUH-leeeeese....

I wish I could look that good in barbed wire!

This is really unfortunate. I think she has a lot of talent that has not yet reached its full potential, but when the first thing I think of when I see her in her odd pictures is "on a fast track to the next Britney Spears melt-down," she's wasting opportunities to develop her talent.
01:32 AM on 10/22/2009
OR.... you can say: "The first thing I think of when I see her in her odd pictures is she is on a fast track to the new Madonna or Cher". Now that's not my view because I don't think she is that talented, but she is not necessarily on a course for certain destruction.

I'll give you a more recent example of Christina Aguilera, who at Rihanna's age dressed in the same type of wacky, revealing, attention grabbing outfits. Where is she ten years later? No meltdown, stable mother, great artist and is basically normal. Don't be so quick to judge.

I only consider a woman to be topless if I can actually see her nips.

If she's wearing face barbed wire, that doesn't count.

She HAS to do this kind of thing for publicity. It's not like anyone cares about her music.
08:57 PM on 10/21/2009
Hahahaha...yeah except for the millions upon millions who buy her albums and attend her concerts, and every hip hop and pop artist that is dying to work with her. Other than that though, nobody.

Nicole Kidman would agree.
However, Rhianna probably is disconnected from this thinking. She's doing it for the money so she would see herself as setting a high value for herself. To me the photo reflects the conciousness of the female as an object of violence. The fantasy dominatrix to be feared perhaps originating from the same veins of myths and legends that have been used as justification to harm the female in reality. The photo is a symbolic send up to all those women and girls whose society deemed of no value at all who are violated, humiliated, and subjected to to violence everyday. Rhianna and her handlers I'm sure think the photo is fierce. Her recent bout probably belies a life used to violence but because she now has wealth and fully capable of walking away and living independently from an abuser, she probably can not relate (or rather can no longer relate) to women/girls without that option. She disconnects.

I could take a swipe at her lack of education giving her a myopic understanding violence against women but fact is, she probably doesn't care. Would she make the same choices if she had education, were older, surrounded herself with deep thinking feminists/global activistsWho knows. It's Show Business, not everyone can be a Mary J Blige or Alicia Keys. Stars have money but are still human and can seem confused Rhianna, Britney or even downright self destructive Whitney Houston.

Hit Songs Michael Jackson wrote himself include:

The Way You Make me Feel,Smooth Criminal,Bad, Dirty Diana, Dangerous, Billie Jean, Stranger in Moscow, Beat It, Black or White, Don't Stop (Till You Get Enough), Earth Song, Heal The World, They Don't Care About Us, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin, Who Is It, Will You Be There, Speechless... and others

BIggest Selling Single of All Time, happens to be co-written by Michael Jackson: "We Are The World"

Hit songs Rihanna wrote by herself: none.

There seems to be a indirect proportionality between artistic talent and amount of clothing shed.
