The Ten Most Egregious Fox News Distortions (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 3/18/10   Updated: 5/25/11

Fox News has defended itself against administration criticism by saying the White House has confused its pundit shows with its news programs. But the network constantly, misleadingly disparages Obama and his administration in its supposedly straight reporting. Here are the ten of the worst examples; there are many more.

Bill Hemmer Accuses Obama "Czar" Of Condoning Statutory Rape

Bill Hemmer reported that Department of Education official Kevin Jennings knew of a "statutory rape" case involving a 15-year-old student but "never reported it." In fact, the student was above the age of consent.

The one where they use the GOP talking point, including the GOP typo, is proof positive that Fox News is nothing more than the communications armpit of the Republican Party.

But the worst of all is their lies about the Patriot Act, terrifying people to exchange our liberties for some temporary security. Of course it accomplishes neither, and the voters should know better, but it also shouldn't be legal to lie to us about national security and our rights to be free from unlawful searches and seizures.

So you agree the entire Patriot Act should be repealed. Good.

I personally applaud the White House for calling out "Fox" for what it is, an "oppositional political outlet". The point isn't that Fox is right leaning. The station is owned by Roger Ailes, who himself is right leaning. It only makes sense that his station echos his ideology. Nor is the point that Fox news is largely opinion programing. Opinion has always been a part of news. It's possible to express an opinion yet still report the news fairly and with balance. The point is that Fox and it's correspondents and hosts advertise and organize protests aimed at and against the White House -- tea parties, anti health reform rallies, the 9/12 march, etc... Then sadly, they elevate coverage of these events, obfuscate their successes or lack thereof and excludes an opposing viewpoint. Since when does organizing protests favoring one party over the other have anything to do with reporting the news? Fox is active in creating the "news" they then cover. What news broadcast on any other station does this? Fox is actively attacking the White House and crying foul when they attack back.

Now I see why FOX is so popular. Liberal outlets devote more time talking about them than they do reporting the news or discussing the *important* issues. This is really just free press...and they're laughing all the way to the bank.
05:18 AM on 10/24/2009
So you're not concerned about Fox's particular...lies. Only happy that they can "laugh all the way to the bank".
What a morally bankrupt position that is--whether you laugh at the bank or not.
06:31 PM on 10/23/2009
I bet that was hard digging -- all you had to do was click on to Soros funded Media Matters who's sole existance is to watch FOX 24/7 and tell people what lies have been told. Pathetic.

Here's what I'm curious about. What would liberals suggest to FOX watchers as an alternative? Do you think Keith Olberman and Rachael Maddow sound like the "Truth"?

You can Hate Fox but you should not enjoy the Goverment trying to silence Free Speech.

Maybe in 2012 when Romney get's elected we'll shut down the Hate Speech on MSNBC.

So, Fox lies, but it's "pathetic" that someone pays attention to those lies, and exposes them? Ok.

I don't suggest ANY television as an antidote to disinformation. I'd suggest Fox viewers read a few books.
09:05 PM on 10/23/2009
...because as we all know people would rather "read a few books" to get "the news" than watch cable news. Yeah OK.

You should've just been honest and said you have no idea what you're talking about.

Did anyone say anything about shutting anything down?
02:54 PM on 10/23/2009
Fox News and Huff Post are pretty much the same, just at different ends of the political spectrum. Eh, that's giving the Huff Post too much credit.
05:24 AM on 10/24/2009
Nonsense. Huffington Post is a blog, and doesn't claim in any way to be a news source.

Whereas Fox News claims to be 'news', even claiming to be 'fair and balanced'--but is actually fiction for propaganda purposes, much like talk-radio for television, and not journalism.

You are either confused or dishonest.
05:58 PM on 10/29/2009
Except on the main page, in the heading, it says "BREAKING NEWS AND OPINION".

I guess they should come clean and just say "LIBERAL BIAS AND DEMOCRAT-FRIENDLY ZONE" instead.

Fox's article, "Obama Should Quit Attacking Fox News and Grow Up," has 131 comments.

This article now has 2,373 comments. GO HUFFY!!!

Fox is having to take more and more heat lately as increasing numbers of mainstream and casual news viewers are realizing how crooked and biased it is. Let's keep working to prove to everyone that Axelrod was right when he said Fox is not a legitimate news source. Let's expose Fox for the propaganda spewing machine it is. The more people that understand Fox is a dirty joke, the more we can start to use real information to work toward real solutions.

is this just most egregious from the last year? If not, shouldn't #1 be prematurely declaring Bush the winner in 2000? Fox News even admitted that mistake after the fact, but the damage had already been done.
05:04 PM on 10/23/2009
Excellent point, Alexeipg!!! However one small change to your comment: Fox doesn't admit to mistakes. They are calculated agenda-driven lies
11:43 AM on 10/23/2009
Bush didn't listen to his generals about Iraq (go ask Gen. Shinseki about that one).

And if Afghanistan was so important (and it is), then how come W and the Repubs (with quite a few Democrats- I might add) detracted from the mission to go lollygagging in Iraq? Ask yourself if Fox (or any other media outlet for that matter) even questioned that nonsense.

We are being lied to, lied to by every side and from every angle. But you go on believing that Fox (and again, any other media outlet) is fair, balanced, truthful, and without an agenda.....

This is crazy ! How are the no laws governing so called "news" organizations. Has some smart lawyer even thought about a class action suit based on their fair and balanced claim ? Honestly ! This is nuts -

If Fox News was truly fair and balanced there would be equal time devoted to Republican scandals as there is to Democrat shortfalls, there would be equal coverage of those who agree with the Democrats and those who oppose them; there would be equal outrage and coverage for stories like ACORN's abuse of the public trust and KBR's disgraceful policy and the Republican law makers who refuse to take action.
Wouldn't it be incredible if Fox News was the source of a breaking story about a Republican senator caught in a sex scandal (choose your poison---pages, homosexuals, foreign women, prostitutes, employee, the best friend's wife, cross dressers....) ? Or a Democrat evading the law (money in the freezer, prostitution rings, tax evasion, pay to play schemes, drunk driving, abuse of power, lying under oath, using tax payer dollars to encourage law breakers....) OH WAIT! They already did that.
09:38 AM on 10/23/2009
Wouldn't it be wonderful if MSNBC did "ONE" story about Charlie Rangel not paying his taxes?

Wouldn't it be wonderful if MSNBC did "ONE" story about Nancy Pelosi using tax payer dollars to fly herself and her family all over the world?

Wouldn't it be wonderful if MSNBC did "ONE" story that does not put Obama on a pedestal?

You don't actually watch any MSNBC, do you? See, they have more programs than Keith Olbermann, and some of them are actually Conservative. I know, it's a shock for you. Try Morning Joe for starters. You won't even get the bends.
02:21 PM on 10/23/2009
Will never happen. Even Hillary can't stand MSNBC.
11:38 PM on 10/25/2009
No, FOX definitely reports on all the Republican scandals. They just conveniently place a (D) at the end of the names.
12:28 AM on 10/23/2009
I just started going through these news clips and the Republican talking points memo being used as a reporting source without the proper disclosures and disclaimers was rather lazy work on the part of HP. The point of having these clips grouped together was to demonstrate lies and misrepresentations of the organization in this case Fox News when reporting on the administration, Pres. Obama, and the Democrats in general. The blurb below the clip focused on the source of the story. That was not relevant to prove their point if the story's substance was true and accurate about the growth and progression of the Stimulus bill.

Beter yet address the invidious connotations of the report. The reporter in presenting the evidence omitted crucial facts concerning the bill's context i.e. the discovery that the situation was worse than previously thought, Lehman Brothers going bust, Banks refusing to lend, global economies screeching to a halt in a day unless governments took action, European and Asian pressure on the US as the source of the problem to take the lead to demonstrate a commitment to doing whatever it takes to get the system functioning again. If Fox was to be truly fair and balanced in their non-pundit shows then similar to reports on the Bush Administration's actions in Iraq, torture, Abu Gharib, CIA leak, and tea baggers, it would offer the context in which the Congress and politicians were operating to remove the appearance of arbitrariness or willful indulgence.

That was the only one with the remotest chance of being a mistake.

It's way past the point of ask *if* Fox is fair and balanced.
