The Guardian:

1. Winterproof your bike

To help your steed cope with gritted roads and grimy puddles, you need to prepare it for the horrors ahead. Clean it properly and then apply an all-weather lubricant to the chain and any other parts where metal meets metal. Don't go mad. The oil should not drip and must under no circumstances must it touch your brake pads or wheel rims.

Be careful you don't freeze your lungs. When its twenty below zero (like it is in Minnesota) if your not careful you can hurt your lungs. It happens when you pump alot of cold air into your lungs with strong exertion on a long ride.

That's when gators, ski masks and scarves come in handy.

Great start, here's a couple others:

1) Get some of those cheap thick-paper dust masks at RiteAid/CVS/whatever and wear them if your face is cold. They wick sweat off so unlike a scarf your skin won't get irritated.

2) If you think you may be riding through wintry precipitation or if there might be ice on the ground, you should run your tires on the LOWER end of their pressure range. This will increase grip and make sliding less likely.

3) Your lowest layer should be some kind of synthetic fabric that wicks sweat off you. If your clothes get wet and they're right up against your skin you're effed. They also make socks that do this for rowers and crew teams.

4) If you usually wear a hoodie you can get a helmet one size too big and wear your hood up under it. If you also wear a hooded windbreaker this is a perfect combo to keep heat where it escapes most easily.

5) A chainguard is a beautiful thing so you don't have to roll up a pants leg.

6) Pace yourself. The cold s_cks at first but it's worse to bonk halfway to your destination.

Number 1: Purchase, and wear correctly, a bicycle helmet.

Number 2: Purchase, and wear correctly, safety glasses.

Ridiing a bike is good for you and the earth. But I don't want my emergency room rates going up because the US is too greedy on the individual level to have single-payer health care.

This med student agrees. Other things of importance:

1. Tail lights, preferably those that blink, even in daylight. I have one on the back of my saddle AND one attached to the back of my helmet.

2. Also, rear view mirrors for the helmet are nifty... I just learned how to use one myself.

3. Finally, take care to make sure you don't get dehydrated. It's easier to overlook hydration in cold weather than in hot weather, and you still can get dehydrated as you sweat, and as you breathe the dry, cold air.

As for single payer, we need it, desperately, but you're right about the greed. Corporate America is insanely greedy and will do everything to stop it.
