NEW YORK — The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is continuing its year-long celebration of its 50th anniversary.

To commemorate the day it opened its doors five decades ago, the museum in Manhattan is waving its $18 admission fee all day Wednesday.

The landmark Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building on Fifth Avenue was considered controversial when it opened. Now revered, the building is said to embody Wright's guiding ethos that form and function are indistinguishable.

The museum paid homage to Wright last spring with a special exhibition devoted to the architect's work.

At dusk Wednesday, the Empire State Building will be lit "Guggenheim" red.

Thank you, Guggenheims, for your wisdom and bravery, when you commissioned
Mr. Wright to create this landmark structure. It's instatntly recognizeable, worldwide,
as is his famous Fallingwater in PA. Kudos on your 50th.

And to think that the aluminum, folding, water cup I bought in Cincinasty, Oh in 1954 looked like the spiral portion of the Guggenheim. My kids were distinctly unimpressed about that when I took them to the Guggenheim in 1984. They remained unimpressed when I gave each of then an aluminium, folding, water cups on their birthdays in 1985. They liked the Guggenheim, Yankee Stadium & the top of the WTC though. The WTC & old Yankee Stadium are gone. The Guggenheim still stands. I divorced their mother in 1988. I sent each of them WTC pins for Xmas in '01. They & their mother had moved to Ky from NJ in '00. They thanked me for the WTC pins when I called them on Xmas '01. Those are an old man's memories of NYC. My sons & the Guggenheim remain, changed but all of them survive, 4 men & a museum. I'm starting to weep; got to close.
