PHOTOS: Your Favorite Hot Farmers

Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 03:20 PM ET

We had a blast with our first hot farmers slideshow, and we were overwhelmed by the number of great submissions from readers of cuties from around the country. Michael Pollan says we need 20-30 million more farmers to live sustainably, so how better to get people enthused than to sex up the profession? Plus, we think there's nothing more attractive than someone who likes to get their hands dirty, supports green eating and looks great doing it. Check out this awesome slideshow of sexy farmers submitted by HuffPost Green readers. Enjoy, and vote for your favorite farmer -- we'll invite him or her to blog for HuffPost Green.

I respect farmers! Most people prefer some clean job. But the are very brave and know their job and just wait for a good harvest

Farmer Billiam here of Liberty View Farm. This has been an exciting contest for me and I have learned a lot too! I have been organically farming for ten years now and have working with many farmers and my community on all sorts of projects and innovations. I have always believed in one far all and all for one. I also believe in cross-pollinating and do not believe in competition so to speak. So on Saturday Oct 24th I thought of an idea. I was running neck and neck with the guy in San Fransisco and running the farm at harvest I did not have the time to promote this like he has with his PR Person... I told him (when I was in the lead) If I were to win I would share the prize of blogging with him honor all farmers and symbolize how all of us farmers working together accomplish healthier growing and are better able to educate and set an example if we support one another. It would also make for a better story and have greater impact!

Monday he sent an e-mail declining my offer! For several reasons he said it would be less useful for him!!!
I was devastated.

If I win I am going to include all of us in this contest and many others because we are all winners and are doing so many wonderful things in many ways large and small. Always bearing fruit, Farmer Billiam - Chow 4 NOW!

Re: Billiam, Very apologetic!
It seems we've had a big misunderstanding. We absolutely support fostering a farming community and not competing against other farmers. That said, I think this competition has been fun for people, and has generated a lot of interest in our individual farming projects and all of our larger cause.

When you asked me to contact the Huffington Post with you and make a "uncompetitive statement," crowning ourselves as co-hotties I declined because I didn't want to give the impression of taking this whole thing too seriously. I'd like to give a big thanks to the Huffington Post for doing this article, it's a fun gimmick that's gotten people interested in what we're doing.

It sounds like you're working on some amazing projects in New York. It's been great hearing about them, and I wish you all the best in your future farming endeavors. (leasing a tree is a great idea)
I strive to educate my community about sustainability through food, fun and farming. I believe fun is our greatest educational ally. I have had great fun with this contest and I hope everyone continues to also. Thanks readers and voters!

Hello David,
Part one.

I have 12,500 people on my email list for my weekly E-Newsletter "Cultivating Community and Farmers and over 1,300 friends on Facebook, because I believe in team work and cross pollinating. I think my farm's success (2009 Top Ten Apple Picking Farm In America- Travel + Leisure American Express Publishing) and other accolades has come in part from my never ending support of other people and organizations and farmers. Spreading good ideas and innovations that not only help my farm but help other farms as well. I do not know your motivation or if you consider yourself a small gardener or small farmer but small farms are struggling, the more we support one another the more we can all grow. My friend Tim's email to you suggesting we be crowned might be one of the reasons you turned down the idea although you say you didn't want to give the impression of taking this whole thing too seriously. It is a shame you did not return my phone call because I still think we would have made a bigger story showing that we support one another. I am a typical Progressive Liberal Democrat who believes in community. A lot of us are spinning our own wheels. If I win I am going to include all the farmers in this contest and the last and highlight all the terrific aspects each and everyone of America's Farmer's Cultivate!

Hello Again David,
Part two.

The Huffington Post has been my one and only source of information for sometime now, in fact I have included articles in my e-newsletter. With that said, I have been honored with this contest and again; learned a lot too. I could not have won this with out everyone who supports Liberty View Farm, shares my ideas and enthusiasm. The letters of support and encouragement I have received will not be forgotten and have proved to me that we are all in this together and can only do great things when we support one another. I look forward to speaking with you soon and learning all the wonderful things you are doing. Through the internet and The Huffington Post in particular, we can and will support and spread good ideas so all Americans can Eat Healthy and be Happy! Chow 4 NOW..

always bearing fruit,

Billiam van Roestenberg

These people are making my world a better and better-tasting place. Glad to see farmers from all over the country recognized here. Can we post any additional photos, or are the nominations closed?

I see a group of healthy, happy people who are doing work they love--not to mention that they live in a healthy environment and contribute much to making a better world. You can't beat it.

They're all winners.

Organic growers forever!

I'd vote for all of them. I support local farmers every weekend at the Union Square Greenmarket. On a chilly Saturday, there's nothing like hot New York organic apple cider.

At first I thought the headline said "Smokin' Pot Farmers."

Never mind.
